Club organises eye camp
Patiala, February 28 Club president OP Gupta inaugurated the camp. A team of doctors headed by Dr JPS Sodhi from Aggarsain Hospital, Patiala, examined 500 patients. Using stitchless surgery and implant lenses with phaco millennium surgery, as many as 60 patients will undergo cataract operation at Aggarsain Hospital. Gupta announced that Rotary Club Mid-Town was contemplating to make the said camp an annual project under the banner "Save Eye". |

Cocaine worth Rs 2 cr seized
Ambala, February 28 According to the police, youths, who have been identified as Pankaj, Amit and Jitender, were arrested near the Staff Road. The police got a tip off in this regard. One of the youths is a resident of Uttar Pardesh, while two others belong to Ambala Cantonment. The police said the youths had attempted to attack the police party too. The police has registered a case under the NDPS Act. They were produced in the court of duty magistrate, which remanded them to the police custody for four days.

Afghan woman sets herself afire
Chandigarh, February 28 The victim, Saida, who was staying as paying guest in Sector 15, told the police that her fiance had broken their engagement, following which she was upset. She was a BA final-year student at a local government college. The police received information around 2:55 am from the Sector 16 Government Multi-Specialty Hospital that a woman was admitted with around 25 per cent burns. She suffered burns on her back, arms and neck and doctors said she was out of danger. Saida told the police that she was engaged to Abdul Sami, also an Afghan national. Sami had shifted his accommodation from Sector 15 to Sector 16. Saida took out petrol from a motorcycle, went to a park near the Sector 16 residence of Sami and set herself afire. Hearing her cries, he came out and put out of the flames by putting his shirt around her. She was rushed to the hospital. The police registered a case of attempt to suicide against her under Section 309 of the Indian Penal Code on the basis of her statement. In connection with the other case, the police said the widow, Suman, mother of a six-year-old son, was found hanging around 11 am. She was living alone after the death of her husband a year ago, who had committed suicide. Her son was living with his grandparents. Her neighbours, who did not get any response to their repeated knocks at her door today, called the police, which broke open the door and found her hanging from a ceiling fan hook. The police said the victim left no suicide note and might have taken the extreme step as she failed to cope with the trauma following her husband’s death. |

Thieves decamp with laptop, camera
Mohali, February 28 Darshan Singh, owner of Devindra Enterprises, said thieves decamped with his laptop and digital camera. He runs the business of graphic designing. The next target was the adjoining shop of a dentist, where thieves made away with a laptop and a digital camera. Another two shops, Ajanta Laboratories and emigration consultant were also targeted. The police has registered a case and is investigating the matter.
Snatcher held
Gulshan, a resident of Nehru Colony, Sector 52, Chandigarh, and Varinder Singh, a resident of Ghanaur, were arrested by the police for snatching a mobile and Rs 100 in cash from Sanjay Sodal, a resident of Phase V. The victim was returning from his office at C 157, Industrial Area, when the incident took place. A case under Sections 382 and 34 of the IPC has been registered.
Kidnapping
Biru, a resident of Muradabad, Uttar Pradesh, complained to the police that his 14-year-old daughter had been kidnapped by Harmesh Lal. The police has registered a case under Sections 363 and 366 of the IPC. The complainant told the police that he was sleeping in his house on February 14 and the next day his daughter was found missing.
Man hit by truck, dies
Kalka: Gian Singh, who sustained serious injuries in a road accident on Friday, succumbed to his injuries yesterday night at the PGI, Chandigarh. The deceased is survived by his wife and two children . Gian Singh was on his way to Kalka, when a truck hit his motorcycle. He was then rushed to the Civil Hospital, Kalka, from where he was referred to the PGI, Chandigarh. The truck driver fled from the spot. |

Chandigarh, February 28 Gaganjot of Sector 43 reported to the police alleging that occupants of a Maruti Zen car (DL-2-CN-9023) sped away without making the payment after getting their car refilled from the Hindustan Petrol station in Sector 39 yesterday.

Held for theft
Rajesh Kumar of Jaipur reported to the police alleging that Doodh Nath of Mauli Jagran was caught red-handed from near Durga Nursery, Mani Majra, yesterday, while stealing clothes from Kalagram. The police arrested the accused after registering a case.

Godrej Boyce thrash ETA club
Panchkula, February 28 Amar Jit Kumar and Vinod Sharma were jointly declared man of the match. Batting first, the ETA Cricket Club XI was all out for 136 runs in 24.5 overs. Maneesh Nanda 40, Vaneet Nanda 18 and Samrat Pujara 17 were the main scorers for their team. For Godrej Boyce XI, Amar Jit Kumar, Vijay Paul and Sarabjet Saini took two wickets each, while Rajesh Monu and Naresh Dhingra scalped one wicket each. In reply, the Godrej Boyce Cricket XI easily achieved the target by scoring 138 runs for the loss of six wickets in 23.2 overs. Amar Jit Kumar 48 runs in just 36 balls, including seven fours, and Vinod Sharma 39 runs in 49 balls, Jai Kapila 20 and Vijay Paul 18 not out were the main scorers. Tavleen wins top spot in golf tournament
Chandigarh, February 28 Finishing one point behind with 26 stable ford gross points was Rajesh Trehan in the tournament organised by the Rotary Chandigarh Shivalik. The nett winner in the 0-12 handicap category was Rajesh Trehan (34 points) with YP Das finishing four points behind at 30. The 13-20 handicap gross title went to Adilbir, who finished with 25 stable ford points. JS Kang was second with 22 points. The nett winner in this category was again Adilbir (38 points) with Parduman second at 35. Ambala clinched the team title scoring 97 points. This was three points better than Shivalik who finished second at 94. Vijay Wadhawan was the nett winner in the women section with Ashu Singh finishing second. Tavleen Batra was closest to the pin (6 ft). Raman Abrol and APS Dhillon won the longest drive title in the under-50 and above-50 age categories, respectively. Sunil adjudged best boxer
Chandigarh, February 28 Army Sports Institute (ASI), All-India Police (AIP) and Air Indian Force (AIR) bagged the winners trophy with 45 marks, while runners-up trophy was bagged by ARM Bangalore with 23 marks. Satish Chandra, principal secretary, Punjab, was the chief guest on the occasion. He gave away prizes to the winners. Earlier, in the light fly 49 kg event, Pankaj of Punjab defeated Boney Singh of ASI by 7-3 points, while in the fly 52 kg event, Sanjay of ASO beat Shah of AIP by 8-2 points. In the bantam weight 58 kg category, Kamal of ARM defeated Vishwanath of AIR 5-1, while in the light 60 kg, Neeraj of ASI thrashed Pradeep of ARM 10-0. In the light welter 64 kg category, Somvir of Chandigarh-B team defeated Thoi Thoi of ASI 5-4, whereas Amit of ASI thrashed Ashish of Jammu and Kashmir 6-1. In the middle weight 75 kg category, Sanbeer of ASI defeated Raninder of Madhya Pradesh 6-2. Wrestlers’ body demands stadium in Kharar
Chandigarh, February 28 Christina, who was instrumental in starting women wrestling in the country about 35 years, died recently. Unable to control his emotions, Sardool Singh, Christina’s husband said not a single government official came to see his wife in the hospital. He claimed that the then state government headed by Parkash Singh Badal had allotted a plot in Kharar in 1971, but nothing concrete had been done to handover the physical possession of the plot to set up the stadium. KS Minhas, president, Punjab Wrestling Association, said he had taken up the issue with sports director of Punjab Pargat Singh. He appealed to him to provide some financial help to the ailing wrestler but the latter had expressed his helplessness. Minhas said even though the state government had constituted the sports council to promote sports, no meeting had been held for the past three years. He said the government had no concrete sports policy and had failed to sanction funds to support the sportsmen. He said even the Centre had failed to give any financial aid to players of the state who had been striving hard to bring laurels to the country. He said MS Gill, Union Sports Minister, had taken some keen initiatives to promote sports in rural areas. He allotted funds to improve infrastructure in the state. Minhas urged the state government to approve the project. |
