Ugly Betty, which inspired the Indian hit Jassi Jaisi Koi Nahin, is on from Friday to Sunday at 10 P.M. on Star World. The show is in its third season in India with an ever-growing viewership. The popularity of Betty has taken even its makers by surprise and viewers are constantly wondering when she would ultimately go in for a makeover. But there are others who say that giving her a makeover would make her look like any other soap star and she’d lose her appeal. So the show goes on even as Betty makes herself indispensible to Mode, the fashion house she works for, and more so to her boss Daniel Meade. Meade relies on Betty’s good judgment and quick thinking and also trusts her with all his financial dealings. Which not just elates Betty but makes her one of the most valuable Plain Janes in the world.

Killing fields

We are living in an age of terror. In fact, India has had to pay a heavy price for fanaticism. There have been a series of bombings, hijackings and assassinations of the country’s leading political figures. Infamous Assassinations: Indira Gandhi & Rajiv Gandhi on Thursday at 9 P.M. on the History & Entertainment Channel recounts the unnatural deaths of two of India’s most prominent post-Independence leaders. Indira Gandhi was assassinated on October 31, 1984, by her Sikh bodyguards as she walked in the garden of her New Delhi home. It appeared that her murder was an act of revenge for her orders to storm the holiest shrine of the Sikhs in Amritsar in 1983. Six years later, on May 21, 1991, in Sriperumbudur (near Chennai), her eldest sun Rajiv Gandhi was also assassinated by separatists in a bomb explosion. With the help of rare footage, Infamous Assassinations showcases the fact that we are living in dark times and the worst may not be behind us. — NF
