IT is being considered not just as one of the great engineering marvels but also a major breakthrough in astronomy. The Big Bigger, Biggest series on the National Geographic Channel on Thursday at 9 P.M. showcases the Herculean efforts that have gone into building the world’s largest telescope. Called the Large Binocular Telescope, it is a testimony to the technological leaps that the world is taking in its understanding of the universe. The telescope sits on a mountain in Arizona, over 3,000 metres above the sea level and like a giant pair of eyes it stares up into the night sky. Equipped with two enormous mirrors, it allows astronomers to see further into space than ever before. Capable of producing images of heavenly bodies with startling clarity, the LBT focuses its two giant mirrors on stars, tens of millions of light years away from the Earth. The film that explores how this magnificent instrument was made possible through a series of six engineering breakthroughs.
