‘Govt should pay I-T of pensioners, employees’
Patiala, January 16 Gupta said he would make efforts to bring the pensioners under one front and would subsequently meet the Governor and the Chief Minister for the acceptance of their demand. In a press note issued here, Gupta claimed that the Punjab government paid income tax of ministers and MLAs from the government coffers. “But the government has not extended this benefit to the other serving staff and pensioners. We demand that this disparity must be removed at the earliest”, he asserted. Gupta further demanded that the government should pay the income tax of the staff of semi-government institutions, including that of municipal bodies, universities, banks, commissions and improvement trusts. “In a nutshell, the person drawing their salary and pension from the state exchequer should be given the benefit of income tax relief, as being enjoyed by the ministers and MLAs”, he added. |

135 Gymkhana waiters get free uniforms
Patiala, January 16 Dr Balbir Singh, honorary secretary of the Rajindra Gymkhana and Mohindra Club, who presided over the function and distributed the uniforms along with other members of the executive committee of the club, said the club management had sought the help of social and voluntary organisations, besides some philanthropists to arrange for these uniforms. The waiters were also given shoes on this occasion. This is the second year in a row that the management of the club has arranged to provide free uniforms to the club waiters as a goodwill gesture. Singh said the waiters had been given woolen jackets in view of severe cold conditions. Speaking on the occasion, he lauded the role of the social and voluntary organisations, besides, philanthropists who had come forward to make contributions for this noble cause. The waiters expressed their gratitude to the club management and assured to reciprocate the gesture by way of good service. |

Wrestling trials on Jan 18
Patiala, January 16 This was informed by akhara president Sukhchain Singh Cheema. Cheema after highlighting the achievements of the akhara at the national and international level informed that SAI adopted the akhara in December 2009 and would now select 20 wrestlers and a national-level coach. He informed that as per SAI guidelines, children between the age group of 8 to 14 years would be considered for the trials and they must bring their original date of birth certificate or school certificates along with two passport size photographs. SAI wrestling coach RS Kundu, Arjuna awardee Palwinder Singh Cheema and Olympian Sukhchain Singh will be selectors, whereas Dalbara Singh, assistant director, Northern Centre, Chandigarh, will be SAI representative for the trials. |
Juveniles: SSPs fail to submit affidavits, summoned
Chandigarh, January 16 The directions came during the hearing of a case on the handling of juveniles by the police. Justice Ranjit Singh, on December 17 last, had directed the SSP of all the districts in Haryana and Punjab to submit an affidavit before the court. Though about two-dozen SSPs from both the states submitted affidavits, several other SSPs failed to do the needful and have been directed to appear personally before the court. The petitioner arrested by the Kapurthala police in a case under the Immoral Trafficking Act in 2007, was a juvenile at that time. After attaining the age of 18, he filed a quashing petition, while pointing out irregularities in handling of the case by juvenile justice board. During the hearing on December 17, the court had observed though the case apparently involved a juvenile, the petitioner was made to face normal proceedings and FIR registered against him. |

Rape of Maid
Chandigarh, January 16 The court had also rejected the anticipatory bail of Manjit’s relative Pappu, another accused, who absconded after the arrest of Manjit. The police sources said he would be behind bars soon as they were conducting raids at various places. The police also recovered the laptop and mobile phone of Manjit in which he used to make and store videos of the victim as alleged by her mother. It may be mentioned here that Manjit, a resident of Sector 49, was arrested by the police on January 8 and sent to police remand for repeatedly raping a 14-year-old girl at his residence in Sector 49 and at the residence of Pappu, his relative in Mumbai. The mother of the victim in her complaint to the police had alleged that the two accused raped her daughter when Manjit’s daughter went out to take dance classes. She alleged that they made videos on his mobile phone and transferred them on to his laptop. |

21 cases settled in jail lok adalat
Chandigarh, January 16 It was also decided that such lok adalats on the jail premises would be held every month. Twentyone cases were disposed of involving petty crimes and an equal number of inmates involved in the petty crimes were freed during the special lok adalat. Three judges were present on the premises to dispose off the cases, including Additional Chief Judicial Magistrate Anshul Berry, JMIC Mahesh Kumar and HR Mittal. |

Two commit suicide in separate incidents
Zirakpur/Mohali, January 16 Investigating official stated that the deceased’s son, Vinod Singh, a resident of Saini Vihar, Phase I, Baltana, told them that his father had cut his throat with the sharp-edged weapon at around 7 am. He immediately took him to the Government Hospital, Sector 6, Panchkula, where doctors declared him brought dead. Vinod said five years back his father was working as a labourer in Shimla where he met with an accident and suffered head injury. After that, his father was in depression, he told the police. The investigating official said the body of the deceased had been shifted to the Dera Bassi Civil Hospital for a post mortem and inquest proceedings had been initiated under Section 174 of the CrPC. Meanwhile, Ram Paltan, a 35-year-old driver, allegedly committed suicide by hanging himself from a roof at a tempo stand near the PTL Chowk in Mohali this morning. The police said they got the information that the man hanged himself at the tempo stand. The body of the deceased has been sent for the post mortem at a hospital in Phase VI. The police said the family of the deceased had been informed about the incident. Ram Paltan worked as crane driver in a factory at the Industrial Area. |

Truck owner, driver booked
Zirakpur, January 16 In his complaint, Vikram Thakur alleged that a total of 8,200 Chinese CDMA mobile sets were loaded in the truck in Delhi. The truck was supposed to unload the consignment at a godown in Zirakpur. When the truck reached Zirakpur, it was found that around 1281 mobile sets worth Rs 19 lakh were missing. The police said a case had been registered against the truck driver, Sunder Lal, and truck owner Mukesh Kumar. |

In a high-scoring semifinal match played at St Stephen’s School, Sector 45, Desh Prem Azad Academy overtook DAV Senior Secondary School’s impressive total of 302 for 6 in 45 overs by scoring 305 for 4 in 43.5 overs. A 126-run fourth wicket partnership between Gaurav Singh (50, 5x4s, 2x6s) and Lovejeet Singh (76 not out, 13x4s, 1x6 in 49 balls) helped Azad Academy achieve their target for a well-earned victory. Azad academy’s captain Talwinderjit Singh Senior (66, 11x4s in 45 balls) and opener Daksh Aggarwal (40, 7x4s) also made a valuable contribution with a 116-run association for the second wicket. Daksh and Karan Aggarwal (24, 2x4s, 1x6) had given Azad academy a sound start with an opening wicket stand of 24 runs. Chandigarh, January 16 The organisers said the third round promised to be different from the first two editions. This year, apart from the schools participating in the tournament and a minimum of three boys being chosen for the training camp under Arsenal coaches, there will be another addition. Head scout Jamshid Nassiri will be looking to select the boys with the best skills to be a part of the training camp under the Arsenal coaches. There will be an open skill competition for all children under the age of 15 and Nassiri will be monitoring the children’s performance. The contest will be a series of drills and skill display with elimination in each round. Two boys who get selected from this skill competition will get a once in a lifetime opportunity to be a part of the training camp with the Arsenal coaches. The league matches will be played on January 18 and knockout matches will be played on January 19. |
