Ambala, January 14 A passenger on the platform saw a person hanging in the bathroom of the general coach of the train. The bogey where the body was found was last in the train. The deceased has been identified as Kanhaiya Lal. |

Kidnapping case cracked; 2 more held
Patiala, January 14 The accused, identified as Raju and Yaseen Khan, were arrested from Balaganj area of Lucknow. One of their accomplices, Islam alias Chotu, was already arrested from New Delhi. Patiala SSP Ranbir Singh Khattra said Yuvraj’s family knew the accused. He said the accused were having personal enmity with Yuvraj’s father, Kaushal Yadav, as the latter’s tailoring centre was doing better than that of the accused. “On the pretext of giving sweets to the child, the accused kidnapped Yuvraj and later demanded a ransom of Rs 3 lakh for releasing him,” he told mediapersons. The SSP added that in a joint operation, the Patiala police and the Special Task Force (UP) rescued the child from the accused hiding in the forest area of Lucknow. “A team led by SHO, Civil Lines, SI Bharpoor Singh, and SHO, Rajpura, SI Bikram Brar, carried out the search operation in the Balaganj forest area to apprehend the accused. Finally, the accused were nabbed from Balaganj Chowk, Lucknow, yesterday,” he said. A case under Sections 364, 384 and 34 of the IPC has been registered against the accused at the police station, Civil Lines. The SSP also honoured the cops, who conducted the operation. |

Man killed as scooter rams into tractor
Lalru, January 14 The police said the incident took place at around 9 am when contractor Daya Ram was on his way to a construction site on his scooter. While he reached near the village, a speeding tractor rammed into the scooter and he fell down on the road. A passerby immediately rushed him to the Dera Bassi civil hospital where doctors declared him brought dead, the police added. The tractor driver managed to flee from the spot leaving behind the vehicle. The body of the deceased has been handed over to the family after conducting a post mortem. The police today booked three persons in a dowry harassment case on the complaint of Shruti, a professor at a college in Phase VI, Mohali. She had accused her in-laws of harassing and beating her up for dowry. In her statement, Shruti alleged that she got married to Samir Chopra, a resident of Dhakoli, two years ago. After a few months, her in-laws started beating her up for dowry. She said her in-laws were constructing a house at Dhakoli, for which they demanded money and when she failed to get it, they beat her up. Investigating official stated that the statement of the victim had been recorded. Pedestrian crushed under truck
Kalka, January 14 The deceased has been identified as Bal Krishan Joshi (34) of Uttaranchal, who was presently residing in Gurbakhsh Colony near the Upper Mohalla in Kalka. According to an eyewitness, a recklessly-driven truck-trailer (HR-37-9833) coming from Parwanoo side tilted on the road and Bal Krishan was crushed under it. He was on his way to Samtal Factory in Parwanoo where he worked. Driver of the truck Ajay Kumar of Karnal and conductor Rahul of Panipat also sustained multiple injuries. They were rushed to the GMCH-32, Chandigarh. The police has registered a case under Section 279, 337 and 304-A of the IPC and handed over the body to the relatives after the post-mortem. |

MC, police to check traffic bottlenecks
Patiala, January 14 Patiala Municipal Corporation Commissioner Manjit Singh Narang said he was aware of the problem of traffic bottlenecks created by illegal parking of vehicles, including rickshaws and auto-rickshaws, at the bus stand traffic lights chowk. He said the situation was serious at the chowk from where the road leads to the Raajpura Colony’s main market. Narang said he would ask the MC staff to coordinate with the traffic police to check the menace of unauthorised parking at the chowk, which had become a major traffic bottleneck. Deputy Superintendent of Police (Traffic) Sunita Rani said she was aware of the problem of the unauthorised parking of vehicles. She said traffic policemen would be deployed to ensure that there was no unauthorised parking at the chowk. She said the problem would be solved soon and the traffic bottlenecks at this junction would be removed. Encroachments in the main market of the Rajpura Colony have become a regular feature with the encroachers having a field day. The then Patiala Divisional Commissioner Jasbir Singh Bir had issued directions to the Deputy Commissioner, Patiala, to launch a campaign against encroachments. But the MC has not reacted to the menace around the bus stand. |

102-yr-old freedom fighter dead
Kharar, January 14 Gurdev was born in Shergarh Bara village. His son was looking after him at his house in Chhajju Majra village. His son, Raghubir Singh, said his father was a soldier in the Azad Hind Fauj and went missing for seven years while fighting in Burma in 1945. Later, he was jailed in Singapore. He was awarded with Tamra Patra (citation) by the then Prime Minister. The last rites of Gurdev were performed with full state honours at his ancestral village in Sirhind. His son, too, was in the Army. He lost his fingers during the Indo-Pak war. Tehsildar of Bassi Pathana, former minister Harbans Lal and others were present during the last rites. |
Nari Niketan Case
Chandigarh, January 14 The police had arrested them on the charges of raping the mentally challenged girl at Aashreya in Sector 47, a home for orphaned mentally retarded children. With their arrest, the total number of arrested persons have reached nine on the charges of raping the victim, apart from two women employees of Sector 26 Nari Niketan, who are charged with abetting and assisting in the crime. The police had arrested Naresh Kumar of Sector 70, Mohali, and Devinder Singh of Mauli Jagran on the basis of statements recorded of the accused and the suspects involved in the case. The victim had also identified the accused. The accused had also reportedly confessed to the crime and admitted that they had raped the victim in Aashreya. Naresh was working as a driver in the Government Institute of Mentally Retarded Children in Sector 32 and Aashreya, while Devinder was employed as attendant when they raped the victim. After the arrest of Chhotu Ram, alias Madho, after his DNA samples matched with the newly born baby of the victim in December, the police had arrested his accomplice Bhagwandin Yadav. Both accused, along with others arrested, are in judicial custody. The police had registered a case of gang-rape, destroying evidence and criminal conspiracy on May 18 last year after the victim was found to be pregnant. The police had taken blood samples of 23 suspects employed at Nari Niketan and Aashreya during the course of investigation. |

Youth convicted
Chandigarh, January 14 The court of Additional District and Sessions Judge RS Sondhi today convicted Gaurav and acquitted his accomplice Vikas of the charges. The orders would be pronounced tomorrow. On April 7, 2008, a reckless car driver had not only hit a traffic policeman but also dragged him on his bonnet to a distance, when he signalled him to stop near the Aroma traffic light in Sector 22. The incident took place when home guard Satnam Singh, who was regulating the traffic, signalled a Santro car (PB-03-C-5600) driver to stop. The driver instead of stopping his car hit Satnam Singh. The constable fell on the bonnet. However, the driver did not stop his car and drove it toward the small rotary near the health centre. The police had arrested the accused, Gaurav, a student of SD College and Vikas, student of correspondent studies, both residents of Moga, on the charges of attempt to murder, causing injuries and obstructing a public servant from discharging his duty under various provisions of the IPC. |

Out-of-turn allottees told to vacate flats
Chandigarh, January 14 Several members of the United Cooperative Group Housing Society, Sector 68, Mohali, had approached the High Court, holding that a total 264 members had been allotted flats in the society. Out of which only 106 were genuine. After enrolling 285 members initially, the society managing committee enrolled some more members who were also allotted out-of-turnpossession of the flats. Justice Kannan directed that vacated flats would be re-allotted to eligible members in accordance with their seniority. If any obstruction was caused in vacation or re-delivery to eligible persons, the court could be approached and the process could be undertaken with the help of bailiff of the court. The cost of possession would be borne by the person causing obstruction, court ordered. Zirakpur and the area around it has as many as 71 unauthorised colonies, while only 24 colonies are licenced, the Punjab and Haryana High Court was told on Tuesday. Greater Mohali Area Development Authority’s additional chief-administrator Balwinder Singh, in a reply told the Division Bench of Chief Justice Mukul Mudgal and Justice Jasbir Singh, said there were two more colonies, which were approved, but later their licence was cancelled after these were found to be violating the rules and directions. He added that 15 colonisers were facing criminal proceedings in the court for raising the colonies without proper licence. Earlier, the High Court had taken suo motu cognisance of the media report on protest by Zirakpur residents after rainwater claimed a life. The court sought a report on condition in Zirakpur, including non-discharge of rainwater, mushrooming of unauthorised colonies, encroachment on the Patiala-Zirakpur Highway, charging hefty developmental charges from builders for providing no developmental work, traffic chaos due to encroachment under the Ambala-Zirakpur flyover, shelter for bus passengers and water logging. The Bench has fixed the case for April 6 for further hearing. |

Four rape accused booked for murder
Panchkula, January 14 According to the police, the accused after kidnapping the girl took her towards Dharampur and were molesting the victim when a local resident spotted them and objected to it. They, however, caught hold of him and threw him down thereby injuring him seriously. Though he did not report the matter to the police. When the girl told the Panchkula police about the incident the eyewitness was traced and a case under Section 307 registered in this regard. On the complaint of the girl’s mother, the police had registered a case against the four accused identified as Madan of Saharanpur (UP), Vikrant of Muzzaffar Nagar, Sumit of Jalandhar and Sushil. Violence mars Lohri festivities
Chandigarh, January 14 Lawlessness following incidents of crime is becoming all too common in Indira Colony, where similar scenes occurred a few months ago after a youth was murdered there. In last night’s incident a dispute between two families snowballed into violence with miscreants having nothing to do with either side hurling stones, causing damage to houses and vehicles parked in the streets. The cops, who used mild force to disperse the violent mob, remained deployed in the colony throughout the night. The police has, meanwhile, registered a cross case against both parties while charging a group with rioting, causing hurt, damaging property and criminal intimidation and the other party with assault, causing hurt and damaging property and criminal intimidation. Sources said a colony resident, Jagdish, had a dispute with his neighbour Rakesh. They had an argument outside Jagdish’s home when some people passed remarks on Rakesh, who was walking down the street. The heated debate that ensued took a violent turn and members of both parties who were armed attacked each other. Several people were injured in the clash. DSP (east) Jasbir Singh Cheema said five people belonging to both sides that were involved in the fight had been arrested and efforts were on to nab the remaining miscreants. In a similar incident, a Punjab police subinspector, Rajnish Kumar, who was posted in vigilance security was hurt in a clash in the Sector 46 market last night. He had gone for dinner with two friends to the market where he had an argument with a group of youngsters. Soon the debate turned into blows being exchanged with more youths belonging to the other party joining in. They assaulted Rajnish with batons and rods while his friends fled from the scene. Rajnish was taken to the Government Medical College & Hospital, Sector 32 where he was diagnosed with a fractured hand. He was later discharged from the hospital. The SHO of the Sector 34 police station said a case of rioting, causing hurt and criminal intimidation had been registered based on a complaint filed by Rajnish. Two suspects in the case, Kulwinder Singh of Sector 46D and Jagdeep Singh of Sector 45D, had been arrested so far while their accomplices were still at large, he added. In yet another incident, Amit, a resident of Mouli complex, reported that a group of about four people thrashed and threatened him in the area on Thursday afternoon. Woman hangs herself to death
Chandigarh, January 14 The police said the death came to light at around 4.30 pm when Jatinder’s younger brother Amandeep noticed her hanging. The police was informed about the incident, which took the body into its custody and shifted it to the Sector-16 Government Multi-Specialty Hospital. Jatinder was to be married in March. The police said a post mortem would be performed tomorrow. The police has initiated inquest proceedings into the incident under Section 174 of the CrPC. |
