Development Patiala likely to see many projects take shape Umesh Dewan Tribune News Service
Patiala, December 27 “Shifting of the garbage dump from the city and setting up of the solid waste treatment plants are the two main projects, which are on the priority list of the MC. Once the Dialpura garbage dump becomes operational, the garbage from the city will be dumped at Dialpura”, Municipal Commissioner Manjit Singh Narang said. He further said that shifting of the garbage dump outside the city would be a great reprieve for the residents. Another important project that has been in the pipeline for sometime now is the solid waste management plant. The corporation has decided to set up a solid waste treatment plant at an estimated cost of Rs 40 crore but so far the MC has not been able to find land for the plant. “Patiala generates 220-metric tonne of garbage every day. In order to dispose of this garbage, the solid waste treatment plant is a must. We need 40 acre of land for setting up the plant. We will not only make efforts to find a proper site at the earliest, but will also ensure that the solid waste treatment plant becomes a reality soon”, asserted Narang. Apart from these two ambitious projects, the MC will launch an extensive drive for the beautification of all the interior roads and roundabouts. Civic functionaries have also drawn up comprehensive plans to clear the permanent and makeshift encroachments from the city. The Patiala Improvement Trust has also listed some plans for its residents. The trust is ready to kickstart a scheme for the construction of 75 three-room flats for LIG and MIG categories at one of the trust sites, opposite Khalsa College on Badungar Road. “The trust is also contemplating to construct 60 flats under another developmental scheme next year”, trust chairman Indermohan Singh Bajaj said. Besides, new residential townships will come up next year as couple of big groups had already begun their projects in Patiala. Apart from this, the Patiala District Planning Committee has also worked out a plan for the development of rural areas in the district. “Steps to check ground water depletion, dairy uplift etc would be initiated under the Rs 228-crore District Agriculture Plan, which will be executed in 2010”, chairman of District Planning Committee Surjit Singh Rakhra said. |

Councillors’ infighting hits development
Dera Bassi, December 27 No meeting has been called up for development works in the recent past. In last year’s MC elections, the councillors had focussed only on pending works of the previous years. However, after winning the elections they had failed to fulfil the promises, residents alleged. In Dera Bassi, there were 13 wards, out of which SAD candidates had won from seven, the BJP from two and the Congress from one. The remaining three were won by independent candidates. A political analyst said the councillors were divided into two groups. A group consisting eight councillors was against MC president Manjeet Kaur Dally and was said to be close to late Capt Kanwaljit Singh. The SAD MC president had five municipal councillors on her side. Due to infighting, no meeting had been convened in the last six months. The tussle among them started before the by-elections for the Banur assembly seat. Eight councillors had submitted a no-confidence motion against the MC president. The opposing councillors had alleged, while submitting the motion, that they had lost faith in the style of working of the MC chief. The meeting for the no-confidence motion was postponed due to by-poll. Thereafter, the councillors did not call their MC meetings for six months. On December 10, during an MC meeting, the executive officer had asked the eight councillors to show their requisite majority against the MC president in the no-confidence motion. However, the councillors failed to show the majority of 10 councillors to pass the no-confidence motion against Dally. Banur MLA Jasjit Singh Bunny was also absent from the meeting. Despite all hiccups, residents of Dera Bassi are hoping against hope that things would get streamlined in the coming months and 2010 would bring development in their town. |

Slaughter of sick animals goes unchecked
Patiala, December 27 Most of these slaughter houses are located in the busy walled city limits or in the peripheral colonies of the city. These are seldom checked either by the municipal corporation or the animal husbandry department officials. A source disclosed that there were at least 100 slaughter houses in the town, both big and small, where nearly 100 goats were slaughtered everyday. This is apart from slaughter houses engaged in the business of selling pork and chicken. The municipal corporation has a slaughter house where the goats are certified by the corporation health staff before being slaughtered. However, in the absence of proper monitoring there are reports of sick animals being slaughtered. A majority of Patiala residents are not even aware that the meat they consume comes from slaughter houses in the town which are not certified by any medical authority, posing a grave danger to their health. Private slaughter houses, which have mushroomed in the city, are doing roaring business but at the cost of the residents health. Even the municipal corporation authorities, whose job is to certify the meat products coming out of these slaughter houses, are turning a blind eye on the quality of meat these slaughter houses are dishing out. The municipal corporation officials, on the other hand, wash their hands off this practise. A senior medical official of the corporation disclosed that checking the quality of meat products coming out of slaughter houses was the job of the animal husbandry department officials. He added that some sick goats were brought to the slaughter houses and the animal husbandry department should make necessary arrangements to check whether the goats brought to such slaughter houses were healthy or not. A veterinary doctor revealed that the meat consumed by residents of sick goats can be hazardous to the health of the residents. The unhygienic condition under which such meat was sold also called for attention of the civic body authorities. It is a common sight to see blood in the drains in the busy Anardana Chowk and Lahori Gate areas where a large number of meat shops are located. Many of these meat sellers slaughter goats inside the shops only and at times animals are slaughtered in the presence of the customers to assure them of the “good” quality of the meat being sold. Harnam Singh, a resident of Anardana Chowk, states, “So many times we have forwarded our complaints to the municipal corporation authorities. We have written several times that unhygienic meat is being sold openly in some areas of the town, but to no avail.” A top official of the animal husbandry department admitted that it was the job of his department to check the quality of meat being dished out by these slaughter houses. However, he said that he was not aware of any doctor of his department being posted at any slaughter house to check the quality of meat supplied by them. |
