I told my son that six Chinese traders, who exported fake anti-malaria drugs to Nigeria under the, ‘Made in India’ label, have been sentenced to death. He said, “Great!” I said, “What’s it so great about? We probably make more fake drugs here than China.” My son made it clear why he put China in higher esteem than India because they punish the adulterators with capital punishment whereas culprits in India manage to get away scot-free at times. I said, “Look at it from another angle. India’s reputation and quality of fake products is definitely better and that’s why China is using the tag of ‘Made in India’.
My son stuck to his point that China was definitely ahead in production, “It is quite possible the Indians may have got the orders to export the drugs to Nigeria, but might have decided to get these produced from China as the production cost there was much less. “Dad, we are not discussing the quality and credibility of products. I am talking about law and punishment”, said my son. “Remind me any instance about a food adulterator or fake medicine trader who was hanged in India?” I tried to cover up by cooking up a fake story to enhance India’s position, “Yes I remember vaguely, an adulterator was hanged sometime back but didn’t die.” “Why” he asked? I said, “The rope gave in as it was made in China.”
