Paddy dumped in open continues to rot
Fatehgarh Sahib, December 7 }Despite the government’s instructions that paddy stocks be lifted as soon as possible, large quantities of gunny bags filled with the grain that are lying in the open are still rotting. Commission agents in Khamano and Ucha Pind grain markets have accused procuring agencies of “dilly dallying” over the matter for a long time. “Gunny bags in which the paddy is stored have been kept in open spaces since a long time. This had led to deterioration of the grain stored,” said Prem Singh Manaile, a commission agent. A cross-section of commission agents said the same situation persisted in other parts of the district as well. These included Bassi Gujaran, Khamano, Ranwan, Bhari and Nanowal Focal Points of Fatehgarh Sahib where paddy was rotting in the open, while the government and procuring agencies chose to ignore the situation. Large heaps of procured paddy have been stored in the playground of a government school due to the shortage of space in the godowns of procuring agencies. The commission agents rued though market committee officials always claimed they imposed fines on procuring agencies for not lifting foodgrains on time, these fines remained on paper. According to guidelines, the paddy must be lifted within 48 hours and payment should be made within 72 hours. Some ‘arthiyas’ (commission agents) said they would go to court to resolve the issue once and for all. “Every time during the paddy or wheat season we have to face such problems”, they added. They stated nearly 200,000 sacks were still lying in the Khamano grain market with about 150,000 sacks waiting to be lifted from Ucha Pind. It may be mentioned here that though a glut like situation prevailed in the markets during the rice shellers’ strike, the situation has not improved after it ended. |
