Doctor, student deliver lectures at Perth conference
Tribune News Service

Patiala, November 22
Abhinav Gorea (15), a student of class IX at DAV Public School, became the youngest participant to deliver a lecture on “Holistic approach to prevent child neglect and corporal punishment in schools” at the recent “APCCAN 2009”, the 8th ISPCAN Asia Pacific Regional Conference on Child Abuse and Neglect incorporating the 12th Australian Conference on Child Abuse and Neglect, at Perth, Australia.

He presented the views of teachers, parents and students on the complex problem of corporal punishment in schools.

He highlighted the prevalence of the problem in Indian schools, where, as in most parts of the world, the practice had been banned. Sweden was the first country in the world to ban corporal punishment.

The practice only encouraged children to see violence as the best means to solve problems, he averred.

He also highlighted the problem of lack of safety precautions in schools. The safety precautions had been set by the government for schools to follow to ensure the safety of students.

Due to poor supervision of students, many accidents happened in schools which could easily be avoided by proper control of schools, particularly when students left the school.

He also highlighted poor management by auto-rickshaws drivers by overloading their vehicles with students, thus jeopardising the lives of occupants.

Similarly, Dr RK Gorea, working as professor and head, forensic medicine, at a private medical college, presented a paper on “Prevention of socio-cultural crimes in children around the globe — Policy and practice” at the conference.

He highlighted the various practices prevalent in the society that were acceptable as normal but were harming children in various parts of the world.

Gender-based discrimination of children, female foeticide, female infanticide, honour killing, child marriage, witchcraft and custodial torture, ragging, corporal punishment in schools, bearing of pain and suffering by young people to get certified to be adult males and females and rigorous training of children to make them olympians were socio-cultural crimes that were practiced to different extents in different parts of the world.
