Lecture on legal profession

Fatehgarh Sahib, November 7
Punjab and Haryana High Court Justice Mehtab Singh Gill delivered a lecture on legal profession at Lincoln College of Law yesterday.

He spoke on the legal profession in detail.

He said though at the lower level the set up seemed to be over staffed, there were numerous vacancies at the higher level.

Justice Gill, who has vast experience at both bar and bench, delved upon the state of legal profession in the present day scenario.

He exhorted students to have a good command over English, which was an integral part of practicing at both Supreme Court and High Court.

He expressed satisfaction over the fact that large numbers of law graduates from various areas of Punjab are joining the judicial services.

38 shortlisted in placement drive

Kharar, November 7
Eli-Lilly, a renowned American company, visited Doaba Group of Colleges, Kharar, today for conducting campus interviews of students of MBA and B Pharmacy for the posts of trainee territory manager.

A total number of 38 students were shortlisted after a written test, group discussion and technical interviews.

The final selections will be on the basis of personal interviews. The selected students will be paid an annual package of Rs 3.63 lakh and incentives.

The placement drive was presided over by managing director and general manager of the company. Over 260 students from different colleges of Punjab, Himachal Pradesh and Haryana participated in the joint placement drive.

Executive director Manjit Singh, Doaba Group of Colleges (DGC), chief administrator Jeet Singh and director-principal Dr Rupinder Gupta, DIET, congratulated the students who successfully went through shortlisting process.

Maid commits suicide

Mohali, November 7
A 20-year-old maid allegedly committed suicide in a house in Phase IV here today. However, no suicide note was found. A police official said since the mother of the girl had not expressed any doubt, inquest proceedings under Section 174 of the CrPC had been initiated.

In another case, a 72-year-old woman, Jasbir Kaur, who was living alone in a house in Phase V, was found dead. The son of the woman lives in Kokata. The death of the woman came to light when she did not come out of the house in the morning. The neighbours called up the police who broke open the door only to find her lying dead on her bed.

Snatcher held

Harnek Singh, a resident of Kumbhra, was arrested for trying to snatch gold chain from a woman, Charanjit Kaur, at apni mandi in Phase IX here. A case under Section 382 of the IPC has been registered.

Fifth arrest in opium case

Rajpura, November 7
The Rajpura police yesterday arrested the fifth accused involved in the smuggling of 14.5 kg of opium in Rajpura.

The police has arrested Dinesh Yadav, Manoj Paswan, Mohan Saho and Shaminder Yadav from Jharkhand for smuggling opium in a bus. The fifth accused, identified as Nishan Singh, was arrested after the interrogation of the four accused.

His medical examination was conducted at the Rajpura civil hospital. He was produced before a magistrate, who sent him to three-day police remand.

Ball B’minton
Manav Mangal win title

Manav Mangal High School, Sector 21-C, Chandigarh, won the under-17 boys’ title in the Chandigarh Inter-School Ball Badminton Tournament at Government Model Senior Secondary School in Sector 23 here today.

In the semi-final matches, Manav Mangal beat Moti Ram Arya-27 29-18, 29-12 and Government Model High School, Sector 37, beat Guru Harkishan Senior Secondary School-40 29-15, 29-18.

Led by captain Aman Kumar, Manav Mangal played brilliantly to beat Government Model High School, Sector 37, 29-16, 29-8.

Moti Ram Arya-27 defeated Guru Harkishan-40 29-15, 29-15 to decide the third and fourth places.

Manav Mangal boys had earlier won the under-14 title.

Delhi lads trounce Ahmedabad

Chandigarh, November 7
Union Academy Senior Secondary School, New Delhi, thrashed Gyan Deep Hindi High School, Ahmedabad, by 12 goals in the second phase of 38th ATS Junior Nehru (U-17) Hockey Tournament being held at the Sector 42 Hockey Stadium here today.

The match turned out to be a one-sided game, as Delhi lad Parveen Kumar and Ranbir were the main scorers for their team as they sounded the board four and three times, respectively.

Launching the attacking game from the start of the match, Delhi team scored the first goal through penalty corner in the eighth minute through Mnkit Antil.

Soon after Parveen was able to score through penalty corner in the 15th minute and later scored another two field goals in the 15th and 19th minutes of the game.

Thereafter, Ranbir also scored two field goals in the 22nd and 24th minute. Delhi team had taken the lead of seven goals at half time, when Sumit Kumar scored his only goal by penalty stroke.

In the second half, Delhi team continued to attack their opponents by playing an attacking game and scored five goals in the 38th, 40th, 45th, 47th and 48th minutes of game.

In another match, Guru Gobind Singh Sports College, Lucknow, beat Moti Lal Nehru School of Sports, Sonepat, 9-0 in the Pool G game. Gaurav Singh and Vijender Kushwara were the main scorers for their team, as they scored three goals each.

GGSSC lad Shailesh Yadav sounded the first goal for his team in the 15th minute through penalty corner.

Soon after Vijender struck the goal in the 16th minute. Thereafter, Gaurav launched an attacking game and scored two goals in the 19th and 35th minutes, taking the lead to four goals at half time.

In the second half, Vijender and Gaurav scored one goal each in the 43rd and 54th minutes of game through field goal and penalty corner, respectively. Other players, who made their mark include Lalit Mohan and Nikhilesh K Patel, who scored goals in the 63nd and 68th minutes of game.

In the third match Bright Scholar Senior Secondary School, Sonepat, beat SKC Adarsh Inter-College, Varanasi, 8-0 in Pool J.

Navpreet Singh (2 goals), Nitesh and Siddharth (2 goals), Navdeep Singh and Ranjit Singh (2 goals) were the main scorers for the Sonepat team, while Varanasi lad Saif Ahmed with two goals in the 36th and 40th minutes was the only scorer for his team.

In the last match of the day, Malwa Khalsa Senior Secondary School, Ludhiana, beat Pooja Modern School, Kurukshetra, 6-3 in the Pool I match. For Malwa team, Navjeet Singh and Kulbir Singh scored two goals each, while Bhupinder Singh and Parminder Singh scored one goal each. For Kurukshetra team Naveen Antil, Karambir and Gorish scored one goal each.

3 clinch Mercedes golf titles

Chandigarh, November 7
Karanbir Khanna, Anil Gulati and Gurminder Singh entered the regional round finals of the Mercedes Benz Golf Championship recording victories in their respective handicap categories in the Chandigarh round of the tournament held on the par-72 greens of the Chandigarh Golf Club here today.

Played on the stableford system about 100 golfers teed off this morning to make it to the regional round. Also at stake was a Mercedes Benz car for any participant recording a hole-in-one on the par-3 third hole. There were many aahs and oohs as five golfers virtually made it to within 10 ft of the hole in the first stroke. But no one could actually make it. It was comparatively an easy hole, Deepak Joshi of Joshi Autozone who gave away the prizes said.

Karanbir Khanna who plays with a handicap of 14 in the A category (0-15 handicap) emerged winner logging 41 points. Anuj Sundra finished just one point behind at 40 and thus missed the berth for the regional round.

Anil Gulati logged 43 points to win the B category (16-14 handicap) title a clear two points ahead of Gopal Munjal who could muster 41 points. Completing the trio for the regional round was Gurminder Singh who tied with Col Surinder Singh in Category C (21-24 handicap). Gurminder was declared the winner because he recorded a better back nine.

The overall gross trophy was clinched by HS Kang who finished with a tally of 34 points. The overall gross winner does not go into the regional round, according to Rishi Narain Golf Management, who handled the event.

Another golfer who made it to the regional round is APS Kahai who recorded a drive of 315 yards on the sixth hole to clinch the Ballantine’s Long Drive Challenge Trophy. The Mercedes Benz regional round will be played in Chandigarh in the last week of February.

New Public School hog limelight

New Public School, Sector 18, Chandigarh, claimed both boys’ and girls’ titles in the sixth Emily Gosain Memorial Basketball Tournament being organised by St Xavier’s High School at Sector 20 here today.

In the boys final, NPS boys defeated St Xavier’s School, Sector 44, Chandigarh, 45-29 after leading by 27-14 at half time.

New Public School clinched the girls trophy after defeating St Kabir School of Chandigarh with a hard-fought victory by 29-25 points. The winners were leading by 11-7 at half time.

Sarfraz and Gurmeet emerged the star performers for NPS boys team, who defeated St Xavier’s School-44 in a well-contested final match. Moving up with proper coordination, Sarfraz basketed 14 points and Gurmeet contributed 13 points. Gurjot and Anmol scored nine and eight points, respectively, for St Xavier’s School.

New Public School completed a memorable double, as their girls registered an exciting win against St Kabir 29-25 in an absorbing final. NPS virtually owed it to Anica Kanwar, who top scored with 14 points. Neha contributed four valuable points. For St Kabir, Shriya and Pavani got eight and six points, respectively.

Shishu Niketan-22 of Chandigarh beat hosts St Xavier’s School, Panchkula, 42-38 (half time 23-16) in a match to decide the third and fourth positions in the boys section.

Paras, Parnav do it for St Stephen’s-45

A fine 92-run partnership for the second wicket stand between Paras Rishi (42) and Parnav Vashisht (71 not out) helped St Stephen’s School, Sector 45, snatch an exciting seven-run victory over St Stephen’s School of Togan in the weekend match organised by Desh Prem Azad Cricket Academy on the Sector 45 Stephen’s ground here today.

Batting first, Stephen’s-45 posted 193 in 34.5 overs. Paras Rishi and Parnav Vashisht stroked well as their partnership realised 92 runs for the second wicket. Karan Inder Singh piled up 30 with the help of four fours and one six.

For Stephen’s, Togan, right arm leg break bowler Arjun Aggarwal bagged three for 31. Juniad Mohammed (2 for 38) and Siddharth (2 for 22) were the other main wicket takers for Togan school.

In reply, Stephen’s Togan had put up good resistance before going down fighting by seven runs. Juniad Mohammed (34) and Akash Sharma (44) were the main run-getters. Milind and Subhjeet contributed 22 and 17 runs, respectively.

KBDAV-7 emerge victorious

KBDAV-7 defeated Ryan International School, Sector 49, by 28-22 points in the U-19 Inter-School Netball Championship (boys) being held here today.

In the quaterfinal match, KBDAV-7 defeated Government Senior Secondary School, Mani Majra, 25-19, while in the semifinal match, KBDAV-7 beat Government Model Senior Secondary School, Sector 20-D, Chandigarh, 18-12.
