Flying rats

THE rats had an emergency meeting after an Air India flight was held up for 11 hours at the Rajasansi airport in Amritsar because a rat was spotted in the aircraft. Only after the airlines provided a new aircraft for the passengers did the flight leave for London.

The president of the Amritsar chapter of rodents said that it was quite humiliating for their brother rat that was not allowed to travel to London. "Humans do all kind of experiments on us and then sideline us when the things become successful," added the president.

The general secretary of the rat union also protested, "In 1996, dozens of baby rats were taken up in the space shuttle Endeavour from the Kennedy Space Centre, Florida, to conduct a study that how long durations of time spent in space can affect the mind and body. But once the men develop luxury flights, they view us as a threat. Women jump on their seats when they catch sight of us. In fact, the human race should respect our contribution to research in every field and reserve special boxes for us on all flights. Air hostesses should offer us a variety of cheese dishes."

Whatever the rodents may think, according to the passengers, they were put to a great inconvenience. I asked an Air India staffer, "Sir, aren’t you disturbed about the news that a flight was delayed by 11 hours because of the mere presence of a rat on board?" "Yes, indeed our reputation has gone to dogs," said the staffer, "Our strikes have never caused so much harassment to the passengers as did a single rodent."
