Kharar, October 1 Some of the leading companies that participated in this job fest include HCL, NIIT(Cisco), Webcom Technologies, USA, Maxvistas, V-Glow, Idea, Tcil It, WeExcel, Cad Centre, Career Weavers, Vision Unlimited, Blue Beacons, IICE, ACS, RSG Software, Animation Plus and Columbus. More than 2,000 students from around 86 different universities and states of the country participated in the fest. B’ball player Harjeet honoured
Patiala, October 1 Twenty-one-year old Harjeet is an outstanding basketball player from Patiala and recently played the first senior Asian Basketball Championship that was held at
Chennai. Though the team stood sixth and managed to stay in the upper pool in the championship, Harjeet for sure has made a mark for herself. Earlier, Harjeet had represented India twice in the junior Asian Boxing Championship that was held at Singapore, Bangkok and Thailand.

Tripri, Patiala. Harjeet, who is now playing for Delhi, visited the school today and addressed the
youngsters. Harjeet, while addressing the youngsters, said she was proud to be an alumnus of the school and gave the credit of her achievements to the principal and her coach Amarjot Singh. Man fires at mother-in-law
Ropar, October 1 The couple had got married on September 20. In her statement to the police, Jagjit Kaur said her husband had been forcing intimacy on her. Shocked over this attitude, she asked him to leave her to her mother’s place in Ropar for few days. On September 27, Jagjit came to her mother’s place. Rajinder came to fetch her today but the girl’s mother Jaswinder Kaur resented. Both had a verbal duel after which Rajinder opened fire and shot his mother-in-law in legs. She was rushed to the civil hospital while he fled from the spot. The police has registered a case against Rajinder Singh. |
Youth held guilty of stabbing girl
Chandigarh, October 1 On October 11, 2006, after being unsuccessful in love with student of Sector 34-based Frankfinn Institute, Ajay, resident of Yamunanagar, then 21-year-old, stabbed a girl several times in full public view near busy Piccadily Chowk in Sector 21. The accused was said to be a distant relative of the victim. The 19-year-old victim, belonging to Saharanpur, was accompanied by her cousin sister when around 12.15 pm, Ajay Kamboj, stabbed her with a dagger. Hearing their cries, two boys - Vishal and Vijay - living in the vicinity, came to the balcony of their room and saw the girl being stabbed. They raised the alarm and rushed for her help. Both girls grappled with the assailant and tried to overpower him, but in vain. Soon, Vishal and Vijay reached the spot and overpowered the assailant, who also sustained injuries during the scuffle. The police had stated that the girl and the boy were distant relatives and they had met at a marriage party a few years ago. It was a case of one-sided love. The boy wanted to marry the girl while she declined. |

2 youths held in murder case
Mohali, October 1 Sources in the police said while the police arrested two youths, including a son of the Haryana Police ASI and a taxi driver, their third accomplice was still at large. The police refused to share names of the suspects claiming that it would hamper investigations. On the day of the incident, Sunil was returning to his home with his ‘rehri’ at Phase VIII when two motorcycle-borne persons allegedly attacked him. They attacked Sunil with sticks and rods and then sped away. A retired Army officer, Abhijeet Shahi, reportedly saw the incident along with another person who knew the victim. They rushed him to Fortis from where he was shifted to the PGI. According to the police, Sunil used to load ice-cream from factory in Phase IV, Industrial Area, where he had some tiff with workers of a paint factory in the neighbourhood. |

Ambala resident held for fraud
Chandigarh, October 1 Sources in the Economic Offences Wing of the Chandigarh police said Amarbir Singh of Phase VII, Mohali, filed a complaint against Gaurav Attri of Ambala alleging that he had financed a truck to the accused. He financed Rs 9,99,000 to the accused following an agreement. The complainant further told the police that the verification made by the company officials revealed that the accused had disposed the vehicle after dismantling the same. The police arrested the accused on Wednesday and produced him before a local court, which remanded him to two days of police custody. — TNS |

Cyclist killed in accident
Chandigarh, October 1 According to the police, 30-year-old Nanhe of Darua village was killed when a white-coloured jeep rammed into a bicycle he was riding pillion. The mishap occurred at traffic lights point on road dividing Sectors 29 and 30 around 1:30 am today. The victim’s cousin Badshah, told the police that they were returning home after finishing work. Nanhe was a painter and was unmarried. In another mishap, motorcyclist Manoj Kumar of Sector 40-D reported to the police, alleging that a truck (HR 37 A 0384) hit his vehicle near Satsang Bhavan in Sector 26 on Tuesday morning. Jagdish Kumari, who was riding pillion on the motorcycle, was hurt and admitted to Sector 16 Government Multi-Speciality Hospital. The police arrested the truck driver Surajpal. |

New Indira Colony Violence
Chandigarh, October 1 Though there were rumours of some mischievous elements resorting to stone pelting on a shop, the police claimed nothing of the sort had happened there. However, the police remained deployed in the area to tackle any eventuality. A police official said though the things were coming back to normal, they were not taking any chances until they were quite sure that no untoward incident would occur in the locality, which could disturb the peaceful atmosphere. He added that the police would remain deployed there in the coming days. Shops in the colony and school were opened today. The police remained posted outside the school and the market, besides patrolling other areas. Police officials held a meeting with representatives of the colony and a religious organisation, asking them to make efforts for the peaceful atmosphere there. Meanwhile, Babloo, the murder accused, was arrested today after
being discharged from hospital. The police will produce him to local court tomorrow. |

7 nabbed with 175 bottles of liquor
Chandigarh, October 1 The police arrested Krishan Lal and his wife Rajwinder Kaur of Maloya from their residence and seized 175 nips of country-made liquor from them. Ramu Verma of Colony No 5 was nabbed with 42 quarters of liquor from his residence. Similarly, the police arrested Nanku of Colony No 5 from near his residence and seized 36 quarters of country-made liquor from him. In addition to this, the police arrested Darshan Singh of Sector 35 from Colony No 5 and seized 39 nips of liquor from him. In another incident, the police arrested Naresh Kumar and Rohit of Colony No 5 and 41 and 42 bottles of country-made liquor from them. The police has registered six cases under the
provisions of the Excise Act against the accused in this connection. Cheating The police arrested Mohammad Yusuf of Sector 35, known as Bengali Baba, on the charges of cheating and intimidating a Sector 35 woman. The victim, in her complaint, alleged that the accused had taken Rs 4,000 in June from her, promising to trace her missing husband. She alleged when he could not provide her any information, she told him to return her amount. But he refused to do so and began issuing her threats. A case of cheating and criminal intimidation has been registered against the accused. Opium seized The police today arrested Chaman Lal of Sector 29 from near the road dividing Sectors 19 and 27 and seized 40 grams of opium from him. A case under Section 18 of the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances Act has been registered. |

Chandigarh, October 1 The match started at 9.30 am and Australian team after winning the toss decided to bat first. They scored 211 runs for eight wickets in the 50 overs. Tom Rogers and Stephen Canglio scored 56 and 48 runs, respectively. For Indian side, Saqib Alam took two wickets for 38 runs. To chase the target of 212 runs in 50 overs, Indian team started well. However, they soon started loosing wickets at regular intervals. From the Indian side, skipper Saqib Alam scored 44 runs. Jordan Matthews took three wickets for 49 runs. Tennis court used for marriage parties
Chandigarh, October 1 Besides, misuse of the place during the parties, the court is left sticking as no one cares to clean the court after the parties. Leftover food and vegetables kept on rotting in open inviting stray animals and dogs to feast on it. “The court is occupied by the party people of the stray animals. We have spend money to take membership, but are not getting in the name of facilities,” said a member. “Since the private parties and functions have occupied the court, the players and students are being denied the playing area,” alleged a tennis coach. A player on the condition of anonymity said if the authorities were unable to maintain the tennis court, they should hand it over to any tennis association. "We demand that parties should take place at a separate place,” said Nitin Sharma, a Sector 38 resident. Municipal joint commissioner TPS Phoolka said: “We are serious about the matter and therefore, they had passed a plan for constructing a boundary wall for the ground.” However, an official of the community centre said: “People pay to Municipal Corporation to use the land and there is no problem.” On the contrary, Phoolka said: “This is unlawful and if this type of activity is taking place then stern action will be taken against the official concerned.” |

Chandigarh, October 1 The Kapurthala teenager left overnight leader Honey Basoya of Delhi far behind. In fact Honey, who plays in the B Category (13 to 15 years) played a bad 10 over 82 card to be 14 over 230. But still he continued to be the leader in the B Category with Shubhankar Sharma a good 13 strokes behind at 243. Trailing Ashbeer by two strokes in Category A (15 to 17 years) is Khalin Joshi at 226, followed by Trishul Chinnappa (228) and Delhi's Ankur Chadha (230). In the under-11 category, eight-year-old Aadil Bedi, who led by two strokes on the opening day, found his match in Karandeep Kochhar, who fired the best card of the day in this category, 12 over 84, to be 173 after two rounds. This score is seven strokes better that Aadil Bedi, who is trailing second at 180. Just one stroke behind Aadil is Jaiveer Singh. Feroz Singh Grewal of Chandigarh led the pack in the C Category (11 to 13) with a three round score of 240. Piyush Sangwan was three strokes behind at 243, followed by Jaiveer Sandhu. Referees violate uniform code
Chandigarh, October 1 A city-based netball coach, said: “When the referee, whose job is to judge the players, is least bothered about the basic rules and regulations, then how the discipline can be expected from the players?” A netball player also accused the sports department of PU for not providing the basic infrastructure and said: “What to say about facilities, even the basic norms are not being followed here.” While, another player said: “If any player does not wear proper uniform, then he or she is not allowed to play the match, the same rule should be followed for the officials conducting the match.” However, CS Grewal, director, sports department Panjab University, said: “We have already given the instructions to the referees and other officials to come in prescribed uniform, but if someone is not following the guidelines, then strict action will be taken against them.” |
