A date with Farah

Jasmine Singh chats up the ace director on Bollywood and more

UP front and confident, choreographer director Farah Khan is never scared of speaking her mind. And, now she is also trying to pick up some tips on ‘being tactful.’

"I don’t think we can fake for a long time. I call spade a spade, and that’s the way I am. At the same time, it is important to know how to deal with the world without being rude," says Farah Khan, presently busy with her off screen revelations of various celebrities for Star Plus’s Tere Mere Beach Main. The spirited woman has lots to chat up on. Before that she would want to share what makes Tere Mere Beach Main
so special.

You seem to be absolutely bowled over with Tere Mere Beach Main?

Certainly. This is a kind of talk show that I had thought of doing from a long time. On Tere Mere Beech Main celebrities will share incidents from their lives, which probably you wouldn’t have heard or read anywhere before. The episode went on air with Salman Khan and his mother Salma. Interestingly, Salma aunty has never been on any show. Secondly, the channel (and I of course) thought that masses would want to hear more from Salman. The show will end with Shah Rukh Khan as the guest celebrity.

Well, this was quiet expected. Shah Rukh Khan and Farah Khan make a winning combination. What do you have to say?

I think we are two like-minded people working together. Besides this, Shah Rukh is lucky for me and vice a versa. We think alike, and when you share the same ideology it becomes easier to work as well. He is definitely hard working, and lets the director mould him according to the role. Anyone can fall in love with his never-say-die attitude.

You seem to be a defender of the 1970s cinema. Main Hoon Na and now Om Shanti Om, there is an evident touch of the old world in your movies?

Well, this time I am coming up with something modern, called ‘Happy New Year’ with of course Shah Rukh Khan in the lead (as you would have expected).

Love Aaj Kal or Jab We Met, we see a lot of desi touch in the movies being shot these days. Is this the new superhit formula in Bollywood?

I try out different combinations as far as my movies are concerned. Just like the dances, which I choreograph. They are hip, happening, western and yet very Indian at the same time. In fact, Tere Meere Beech Main has an episode wherein Priyanka Chopra and Vijender Singh share their small town dreams and achievements. They share with us an inspiring story of struggle, sacrifice and success. As far as the rural backdrop is concerned, we’ve seen it before as well. It is being dragged to death now. Would you like to watch a desi version of Lord Of Rings. And, there is no novelty in Bhangra in India. It pleases the overseas audiences the most.

Shahid Kapoor in one of the interviews asked the audiences to carry their brains to the theatres to see Kaminey. Has it become difficult to understand entertainment?

How can you leave any part of your body behind to watch a movie? Audience need to carry brains, eyes everything to enjoy a movie no matter what genre it belongs to- A real life inspired story, a fantasy or a weepi. For how long can you eat Dal chawal. Same holds true for the movies as well. It is next to impossible to enjoy a same genre movie all the time.

So, what is your favourite genre of movie?

I like to watch all kinds of movies, especially comedy and thrillers.

Your life is nothing short of a masala film, which we bet has changed after marriage and kids?

Yes, I have mellowed down after marriage and birth of the triplets. I am more organised in my daily routine and I must add, I am pretty good with time management. I have changed as person as well. I am more empathetic and forgiving. I don’t allow negative thoughts to ruin my intuitions.
