Blood sport

IT is often been dubbed as legalised bloodletting; a brutal sport; and even a game fit for animals. But despite the negative sobriquets, boxing continues to be one of the most watched spectator sports. It is also one of the oldest forms of competition, and was depicted in ancient Egyptian sculptures as early as 1350 B.C. In fact, the first modern match documented was in Great Britain in 1681, and in 1743 a set of rules was published for the sport. The Fight on Friday at 9 P.M. on the History and Entertainment Channel is the story of 130 years of boxing — the only sport that mirrors the social and political history of every ‘civilised’ nation on earth. The Fight is a must for boxing fans.

The big-jaw story

Prehistoric Predator — Monster Shark on Wednesday at 9 P.M. on the National Geographic Channel rewinds back in time and transports viewers into the Jurassic world of our prehistoric ancestors. Life was tough then, and these colossal creatures were masters of survival. Watch Megalodon, the biggest predator to ever swim the oceans of the world. For 20 million years, this ferocious 50-ton shark with a 7-foot jaw and 7-inch teeth terrorised the creatures of the seas from Australia to South America and the coasts of North America. Not even the giant whales of the time were safe from this apex predator. Nearly two million years after Megalodon disappeared from earth, scientists are making an attempt to rebuild this fantastic shark and recreate the pre-historic world again. NF
