A study says women spend almost one year of their lives deciding what to wear

When we say woman, how can clothes be behind. And it's so common to hear men say, where there'll be women there'll be clothes. Well, not denying this, we too agree that we women actually spend a lot of time to decide what to wear. And now to backup what men say, comes a study that states, "Women spend almost one year of their lives deciding what to wear." (Well, that's an exaggeration, but on second thoughts 'maybe' true.)

Quoting more from the study, it also says that a woman on an average, spends 16 minutes every weekday morning deciding what to wear, and around 20 minutes deciding what to wear before hitting the town on a weekend night and the time goes further to 52 minutes when deciding to pack things for a holiday. That's some facts and figures, but don't men take equal time these days? So, we decided to ask our tricity women to throw light on the real relationship between garments and girls.

"To some extent its true, but I have a reason to justify why we women take so much time to decide about clothes," says Devina Malhotra, a mass communication student from Amity and ex-finalist of MTV Miss Teen Diva. She adds, "Woman are great planners and they like to do things the planned way, so when it comes to the most important thing-dressing up, they definitely want to look their best, so they take the maximum time. Who doesn't want to look good and I would add men take equal time these days. So, why name only women?"

Well, that's right. We further ask, does she also end up changing clothes at the last moment? "It happens some times, as what you had thought would look good doesn't really go well. So, it's better to change than feel uncomfortable throughout the day."

"Though it goes against us, but yes, we women think a lot about clothes," says Dr Betty Nangia, electropath, Betty's Clinic-8. Ask her the reason and she replies, "We have so many clothes that we can't decide ourselves what to choose from. Everyday we are looking for something new and when we don't find that something new, we try mix 'n' match, and that takes all the time."

It's a proven fact that what you wear has a direct impact on how you feel about yourself. Dr Betty says, "Clothes definitely have a positive affect. When you are looking good, you get lots of compliment and that not only makes you feel good, but boosts your confidence too."

Well, it's important for any body to feel good about themselves and whatever the occasion, your clothes portray an image and we understand this is fundamentally important to women. Says, Pretti Dhillon, a businesswoman from Phase VII, Mohali, "Women take a little time to decide, but then they take less time to dress-up." She further says, "Well, decision is an important factor and we women definitely decide and then go for the hunt. Not like men firing aimlessly in the air." Point taken.

While the researchers behind the study also say that the biggest chunk of time is spent on picking a killer ensemble for a party or an occasion, selecting the right clothes for a holiday takes more time.

Agrees stylist and deputy general manager, Flying Cats, Chanda Malhotra, "Yes, when you are going out with selected company, you take a little more time to decide what to wear, as you will be under scrutiny. And, I believe it's not only women who do that, but men these days take equal time." She adds, "And decision is an important part of life. So be it for clothes too. In fact, if someone does not choose it is a matter of concern, as these little things in life show how much do you think about yourself." That's some argument.

Then she adds, "If everyone make a conscious effort to look beautiful the world will become a more pleasing place to live in." We bet on that.

Pirates of 70 mm
Simran Kaur & Mani Mala

Piracy. The word itself is enough to wreck Bollywood economy. Infiltrating the music and movie industry, pirated CD business has witnessed a monstrous growth. But just as the movie industry is busy finding solutions to this parasitic attack, they are a hit with the general public- reason minimal charges and easy availability.

Negligible in comparison to the original cost of a CD or DVD, one can pick a pirated CD for Rs 30, whereas an original CD can cost around Rs 300. As for janta, they don't mind watching a poor quality video when all they care about is saving big bucks and well their easy availability too makes it easy for the people to pick a pirated CD.

Agrees Amit, area operation manager of Music World, "The original CD comes in the market after a month of movie release while one can easily get pirated CD even after a day or so. This affects our business a lot, but the sad part is people don't understand that by buying pirated CDs they are harming the national economy as well. The sale of these pirated CDs helps people doing illegal business."

An illicit duplication of an original recording, piracy happens without the agreement of the owner. Gaining popularity across the globe, piracy is on the rise because there is no proper implementation of laws, the government too failing to take any appropriate or effective step to curb the increase of this unlawful business.

Hans Raj Hans, the noted Punjabi singer spells out the damage piracy is causing to the music industry, "heaps of pirated CDs are being produced very passing day without any concerned action being taken. The quality of pirate copies is different from the original. The problem has complicated with the development of technology."

Though he adds, "Sukbir Singh Badal, former deputy CM of Punjab, took an action against piracy by asking all the Punjabi singers to participate in "Anti-Piracy Cell" to ensure proper coordination against piracy. But, it could not succeed the way it was planned."

Maninder Singh, manager, Planet M, Fun Republic can still see a silver lining. "The use of these pirated CDs is less after the arrival of T-series and Moser Baer, as they are comparatively cheaper to the other CDs. Given time and right steps taken, piracy could easily see an end."

Imtiaz Ali
Kareena recommended Imtiaz Ali, says Saif Ali Khan

Bollywood star Saif Ali Khan, who has turned producer with his forthcoming film Love Aaj Kal, says it was Kareena Kapoor who recommended Imtiaz Ali as director for his first production venture.

Kareena had worked with Ali in the successful romantic comedy Jab We Met.

"Kareena highly recommended Imtiaz when I decided to produce a film. At that time Jab We Met hadn't released. So I met him... it was the script and the way he narrated it to me that really impressed me and we decided to make Love Aaj Kal," Saif said.

"I love the way Imtiaz works. He is amazing," he added.

Saif was in the capital with his co-star Deepika Padukone and Ali to promote the film that is scheduled for July 31 release.

The film also stars yesteryear hit couple Neetu Singh and Rishi Kapoor along with Rahul Khanna and focuses on relationships in two different eras, showing that the experience of being in love remains the same.

Asked why he decided to venture into production, the 38-year-old said: "I decided to turn producer because I wanted to own the work that is done. I wanted to be more creatively involved in a project apart from just acting in it and take the responsibility. Basically, after working in the industry for so many years, I wanted growth."

So did he change in anyway after taking this step?

"Yes, I have become more conscious of small things now after becoming a producer — I became more conscious about small details during shootings like whether an artist is coming on time or not, production plans are working in close coordination with other, et al," Saif said.

The actor, who is co-producing the film with Dinesh Vijan under their banner Illuminati Films, says it is an unconventional move and will appeal to viewers.

"Love Aaj Kal will appeal to people since it has got very genuine dialogues. It has a certain newness and boldness in character. It is unconventional, yet very commercial," he said.

It's me, Your Honour!

Paris Hilton appeared to have worked her charms on a judge while testifying in an 8.3 million dollar lawsuit filed against her by movie investors. The hotel heiress has been accused of turning her back on promotional duties for the 2006 comedy, Pledge This! a box office bomb that made just 2.9 million dollars.

The lawsuit claims the socialite disliked the movie, and pulled out of talk shows and radio and magazine interviews for the film in violation of her contract with the investors, reports a publication. The 28-year-old jetted in from Dubai to Miami, sporting six-inch stiletto heels and a black dress, to appear for the case. Paris said that she met her contract's requirements and promoted the movie extensively, adding that the producers made "unreasonable demands" on her when her schedule was already full. The star surprised Chief U.S. District Judge Federico Moreno by giving him a little wave before taking the stand. The judge cracked: "I've never had a witness wave at me before." At one point, Paris was testifying about how full her dates were during rehearsals for her next movie, The Hottie & The Nottie," when Moreno interrupted: "Was it better than this one?" referring to Pledge This! "It was really good," Hilton replied with a giggle.

If SRK can do it, so can you. All you need is a personal trainer

Vivek Kumar with his client

We saw Shahrukh Khan flaunting his six-packs in Om Shanti Om, Aamir Khan went a step ahead with his eight packs in Ghajini, Salman Khan and John Abraham have always had it. So, while the whole world still remembers and praise the celebs’ ‘act of bravery’, we spare a thought for those behind their stunning looks, the personal gym trainers. It’s no more a luxury just limited to Bollywood celebs , a convenience that every fitness freak in the city can afford too.

The benefits of getting personal training are more attention and effective results in lesser span of time. "Once someone opts for personal training, he realises the difference between personal and collective training. One doesn’t have to wait for the instructor’s next instructions, while he is busy training other people in the gym. In personal training sessions, we guide minute to minute and take note of every step of any exercise," informs Sandeep Shah, who besides regular training at Flexity-26, gives personal training as well. Though six years into the profession, he started giving personal training only two years back and that is when he feels the concept became really popular. "People got inspired by Bollywood stars, who were able to change their body shape with the help of personal trainers. Also, now people are aware of the benefits of the personal training and are going for it," he says.

Personal training is best suited to people who are low on stamina and can’t afford to spend much time on fitness. Vikram Kapoor, general manager, Ozone, and also a personal trainer, says, "Personal training ensures consistent work out. When a client asks for it, I make sure that he attends all the training sessions and do the required work out in the day. Then the client can’t escape strenuous exercises, as we have to render results." Personal training aids personal attention, it is beneficial to people low on motivation or who suffer from inhibitions. "People who feel shy of their weight and get conscious while working out, should opt for a personal trainer. Also, we work on the stamina of the client and increase it gradually to make him do more workouts that help him to lose weight faster." One can also get training at their homes in case they have an well-equipped gym.

The one-on-one training doesn’t last for just two hours in a day; it also takes care of the rest of the hours. Vivek Kumar, another gym trainer tells us how. "We keep a check on a client’s calorie count and plan his diet chart. Personal training is a high-pressured job, as the results have to be delivered in a much less time as compared to collective training. This we do by regulating a client’s workout schedule and diet." He also makes his client understand the logic behind every exercise or a certain inclusion in diet chart and how it will help them shed weight. "That makes them follow my instructions more consciously," he says.

Dr Kiran Bala, psychiatrist at Cheema Medical Complex, Mohali talks about depression

Dr Kiran Bala, psychiatrist at Cheema Medical Complex, Mohali talks about depression
Dr Kiran Bala, psychiatrist at Cheema Medical Complex, Mohali talks about depression

Depression has emerged as one of the most serious health hazards in modern times. The situation in India is far worse than many other countries because of the stigma associated with mental illness. However, there’s increasing awareness about mental illness but doctors are finding themselves ill-equipped to deal with new-age depression resulting from inter-personal relationships, work stress, job dissatisfaction etc.

A depressed housewife may conclude that her husband doesn’t love her because he leaves home for office every morning. Similarly, a student who receives low grades in an assignment may feel that his life is useless and that he would fail the entire course.

Dr Kiran Bala, says, "It’s appalling how prevalent depression is in all age groups. In the last few years, we have seen a surge in the number of young children, teenagers and adults coming to us for help." She says depression is precipitated by a wide range of causes, ranging from genetic factors to certain life events. It is advisable to seek professional help and not go to friends and family because there is not much can do.

Stress

It is true that any stressful environment or situation can lead to depression. It can be social stress, job related stress, relationship difficulties, lifestyle out of control, pressures of school and scoring good grades. Other events that could cause depression are: death, change of job, moving from one place to another; even the fear of the unknown can cause depression. "While these events cannot be avoided, we must come up with an effective stress coping mechanism to be able to thrive even in stressful situations because they are never going to go away. Stressful situations just keep changing."

Drinking and drugs

People who take drugs and alcohol are prone to depression. When these substances are used at a young age, they can effect in negative ways. Drugs release dopamine in the pleasure centre of the brain. Drugs can increase dopamine release anywhere from four to ten times. This unnatural high almost certainly leads to depression after the high goes away. Drugs make a person depressed more than it makes him happy.

Not enough sleep

Several studies show that up to 40 per cent of adults do not get the proper amount of sleep per day and among students, up to 71 per cent complain of sleep disorders and lack of sleep. Lack of sleep contributes to a lack of coherence in brain waves. Sleeping during the day and staying up late also interferes with the body’s natural rhythms. This can lead to a sense of depression.

How to prevent depression

  • Sleep is a vital part of preventing depression. Most people require seven to eight hours of sleep per day.

  • If your weekly, daily or monthly routine is set, your body has time to get used to the activities.

  • Sunlight and exercise can help the brain to function a higher level. Make time to enjoy the sunlight and try to stay active in the daylight when possible.

  • Keep away from alcohol and drugs.

  • Make at least one warm meal daily a priority. Good eating habits and good health are important.

  • Have fun every day. Nothing takes the load off of depression like some happy time.

  • Social activities such as chatting, joining a support group sports, and other hobbies can do wonders towards healing a stressed out and busy mind.

Calorie combat

Substantially cutting calories from the diet could slow the ageing process and increase life expectancy, according to a decades-long study of monkeys. Researchers at the University of Wisconsin-Madison, the Wisconsin National Primate Research Center and the William S. Middleton Memorial Veterans Hospital have found that a nutritious but reduced-calorie diet blunts aging and significantly delays the onset of such age-related disorders as cancer, diabetes, cardiovascular disease and brain atrophy.

"We have been able to show that caloric restriction can slow the aging process in a primate species," says Richard Weindruch, a professor of medicine in the UW-Madison School of Medicine and Public Health who leads the National Institute on Aging-funded study. "We observed that caloric restriction reduced the risk of developing an age-related disease by a factor of three and increased survival." During the 20-year course of the study, half of the animals permitted to eat freely have survived, while 80 percent of the monkeys given the same diet, but with 30 percent fewer calories, are still alive.

Begun in 1989 with a cohort of 30 monkeys to chart the health effects of the reduced-calorie diet, the study expanded in 1994 with the addition of 46 more rhesus macaques. All of the animals in the study were enrolled as adults at ages ranging from 7 to 14 years.

Today, 33 animals remain in the study. Of those, 13 are given free rein at the dinner table, and 20 are on a calorie-restricted diet. Rhesus macaques have an average life span of about 27 years in captivity. The oldest animal currently in the study is 29 years.

Weindruch notes that in terms of overall animal health, the restricted diet leads to longer lifespan and improved quality of life in old age. "There is a major effect of caloric restriction in increasing survival if you look at deaths due to the diseases of aging," he said.

The study has been published in the journal Science.

10 reasons why you must exercise

Want to feel better, have more energy and perhaps even live longer? Look no further than old-fashioned exercise. Not only does regular exercise aid in weight loss, it reduces your risk for several chronic diseases and conditions. Finding activities that you enjoy and that can become part of your daily routine is the key to a long and healthy life. The benefits are yours for the taking, regardless of age, sex or physical ability. The list of health benefits is impressive, and the requirements are relatively simple. So, just do it.

Improves your mood: Need to blow off some steam after a stressful day? A workout at the gym or a brisk 30-minute walk can help you calm down. Exercise stimulates various brain chemicals, which may leave you feeling happier and more relaxed. You’ll also look better and feel better when you exercise regularly, which can boost your confidence and improve your self-esteem. Exercise even reduces feelings of depression and anxiety.

Combats chronic diseases: Worried about heart disease? Hoping to prevent osteoporosis? Regular exercise might be the answer. It can protect you from heart disease and stroke, high blood pressure, non insulin-dependent diabetes, obesity, back pain, osteoporosis, and can improve your mood and help you to better manage stress. For the greatest overall health benefits, experts recommend that you do 20 to 30 minutes of aerobic activity three or more times a week and some type of muscle strengthening activity and stretching at least twice a week.

Shed the extra weight: Want to drop those excess pounds? Trade some couch time for walking or other physical activities. When you exercise, you burn calories. The more intensely you exercise, the more calories you burn — and the easier it is to keep your weight under control. You don’t even need to set aside major chunks of time for working out. Take the stairs instead of the elevator. Walk during your lunch break. Better yet, turn off the TV and take a brisk walk. Dedicated workouts are great, but any physical activity you accumulate throughout the day helps you burn calories, too.

Power to heart and lungs: Feeling breathless while doing normal physical activity? Don’t despair, regular exercise can leave you breathing easier. Exercise delivers oxygen and nutrients to your tissues. In fact, regular exercise helps your entire cardiovascular system — the circulation of blood through your heart and blood vessels — work more efficiently. When your heart and lungs work more efficiently, you’ll have more energy to do the things you enjoy and you won’t be huffing either.

Sleep well: Exercise is sometimes the key to better sleep. A good night’s sleep can improve your concentration, productivity and mood. Regular exercise can help you fall asleep faster and deepen your sleep. The timing is up to you — but if you’re having trouble sleeping, you might want to try morning exercise. Researchers believe that morning exercise helps to set your body clock each day that makes you awake during the day and tired at night. Try some morning exercise for a week and see if your sleep improves.

Energise yourself: Exercise is a great way to increase your energy level and fight off feelings of fatigue. Just a few minutes a day of exercise can really transform how you feel and how much energy you have to put toward getting through your day. Research suggests regular exercise can increase energy levels even among people suffering from chronic medical conditions associated with fatigue, like cancer and heart disease.

Better sex life: Regular exercise can leave you feeling energised and looking better, which may have a positive effect on your sex life. But there’s more to it than that. Exercise improves your circulation, which can lead to more satisfying sex. And men who exercise regularly are less likely to have problems with erectile dysfunction than those who don’t, especially as they get older.

Brain teaser: If you though Sudoku was a great brain teaser, try playing tennis. Physical activity, especially sports require a lot of participation from our brain. In exercise, you must make quick decisions, judgment calls, find the best strategies and learn to stay focused. People who remain physical active as they age have a reduced risk of dementia and cognitive decline.

Social quotient: Exercise is a great way to meet people. There are plenty of group exercise activities that you can do that will give you both physical and social benefits. Be sure to work at least one social exercise routine into your week — both your physical and social health will improve.

Live longer: Not only does exercise add years to your life, it also increases the number of years that you live without disease or disability. If you are 65, adding in exercise now can add over five additional years of disability-free living (on average). If you are younger than 65, the benefits can be even greater. So, live longer and live better by exercising.

Senior citizens savored old melodies immortalised by the legend of legends K.L. Saigal, at a musical concert organised by the Environment Society of India at the Government Museum and Art Gallery on Saturday. The musical concert titled K.L. Saigal Ki Yaad Mein featured those old masters who closely emulate the singing style of their celebrated peer -- Saigal.

After rich floral tributes, the programme commenced with soulful rendition of Madhukar Sham hamare chor by Parameswaram Nair, hailed as Saigal of the South, a special invitee from Cochin who lent an exquisite charm to the programme. Then the local duo of Radha Chopra and R.K. Chopra spelt magic in their two duets Chandni Raatein and Mann ki Baat with their mellifluous voices in perfect sync.

Bhupinder Singh from Mohali took the centrestage to bring alive the serenity and depth of emotions in his three songs, including the boisterous Babul Mora. The Jallandhar- based Kulwant Suri presented a musical Guldasta of 20 Saigal hits to regale the audience.

On persistent public demand, P. Nair doled out more numbers like Diya Jala before concluding with Nain Heen Ko Raah Dikha.

Stress, Busted

Stress, something that the entire world is dealing with. British Library organised workshop on Stress Management. The two - hour Stress Management workshop was conducted by Pankaj Sharma, who has a five years experience in the spiritual field of wonderment and has been conducting seminars in India & Abroad.

According to Pankaj, " Stress is a condition or feeling experienced when a person perceives that "demands exceed the personal and social resources the individual is able to mobilise. In short, it's what we feel when we think we've lost control of events. There are very many proven skills that we can use to manage stress. These help us to remain calm and effective in high-pressure situations, and help us avoid the problems of long-term stress. Managing stress is all about taking charge: taking charge of your thoughts, your emotions, your schedule, your environment, and the way you deal with problems." He adds, "The ultimate goal is a balanced life, with time for work, relationships, relaxation, and fun - plus the resilience to hold up under pressure and meet challenges head on. Not all stress can be avoided, and it's not healthy to avoid a situation that needs to be addressed. You may be surprised, however, by the number of stressors in your life that you can eliminate."

The workshop got good response from the members. Senior executives of a number of companies had enrolled their names for the workshop. There were 50 members who attended this workshop. Observations and questions from the audience followed and the session was lively and interactive. — TNS

That 'thing' for cars

While Michael Jackson reportedly died with a debt estimated at around 400 million dollars, it has emerged that the King of Pop enjoyed an excessively lavish lifestyle, and had a "thing" for cars. The Thriller hit-maker was known for splashing out money to support his lavish lifestyle with private planes, zoo animals, fantasy rides, antiques, hotels, and personal staff.

However, court papers from his 2000 divorce with Debbie Rowe have revealed that Jackson absolutely loved automobiles, reports a news media. According to the papers, 75 vehicles had been registered under Jackson's name in California, ranging from several Rolls Royce's to fire trucks to motorcycles to convertibles to Chevys to Mercedes to pick-up trucks.

But Rowe was permitted to keep just one car - a 1998 Ford Explorer-as part of her divorce settlement. The settlement also states that Jackson was to be the sole owner of "all trains" in his possession. Rowe was also awarded a house in Beverly Hills, but Jackson owned Neverland ranch and three other sprawling properties in California.

And it is believed that his trustees now have their work cut out piecing together all his funds. At the time of his divorce, MJ had 16 checking accounts and 5 savings accounts with numerous different Californian banks. But despite being such a big spender, Jackson's made it to the 2000 edition of the Guinness Book Of World Records for breaking the world record for the "Most Charities Supported By a Pop Star." — ANI

Oops...

Fresh concerns regarding the health of Britney Spears have emerged, after the pop princess reportedly collapsed and injured herself during a recent dance rehearsal. The singer, presently on the European leg of her Circus world tour, was allegedly practicing moves for a new song when she lost consciousness, and fell to the floor.

"She collapsed when the dancers went to put her back on her feet. She fell to the floor and landed on one of the dancer's legs," a website quoted a source as saying. "The dancer's tennis shoe smacked Britney in the chest and on the face. It hit her chest with such a force that it caused a four-inch bruise," the source added. The blame was laid on the Womanizer hit maker's busy schedule, and a low blood-sugar level.
