Swear by sari
Aishwarya Rai Bachchan walks in an elegant red chiffon sari. Bollywood's new hottie Deepika Paudkone wears an exclusive pink sari to an award ceremony. Item girl Rakhi Sawant sizzles in a metallic brown sari. Kareena Kapoor sparkles in heavy bordered white sari. Sassy Soha Ali Khan is adorning a dark blue sari and glamorous Rekha just can't do without traditional kanjeevarams, and off late, chiffons. Want more? Victoria Beckham donned more than a wig for her Vogue India cover. She wore a sari. And then the Pussycat Dolls thrilled in designer saris by Rocky S. This is it. Bollywood beauties and some Hollywood ones too are wearing saris to almost all the functions they attend- an award ceremony, a charity visit to an NGO, to a brand launch, function, on a talk show. So, they get to show off toned backs.
The trend has caught up with the city women as well, who now wear saris to all kinds of functions. Now, all you ladies, who have packed off their saris, neatly placing them in the closet, waiting to give them one 'formal chance', this indeed is a good fashion news. Chiffons, georgettes, crepes intricately highlighted with work are in vogue. City's busy and gorgeous tell us about their inclination for the six yard fabric, which they like to flaunt with grace at all important occasions, formal or casual. Niharika
Rai, "I prefer saris, which are comfortable and easy to carry. Cotton gets crushed easily and needs to be starched regularly. I rather go in for printed crepes, chiffons and georgettes. At the same time, I am not into innovation; I like it simple and classic. Dark colours, like the combination of maroon and black is my favourtie pick for formal occasions. Nothing makes a woman look pretty than a neatly draped sari. Ritu
Kochhar, The Bollywood divas have set the trend of wearing saris to various functions, which goes without saying looks elegant and stylish. The fashion too is returning to its traditional form with innovations here and there. Nevertheless, it is pretty elegant fabric that can be worn to formal and informal occasions. Fabric and colour coordination matter the most to me. I like to go in for a heavy bordered sari to a formal occasion, and crepes and chiffons to a casual one. But, no dabka and zardosi are a big no for me. Varsha
Khanna, I emphasise on blouses more. A good blouse can change the way a sari can look. I would definitely pick sari over any other garment for its elegance and grace. Personally, I find stonework pretty appealing. So, a sari with stonework accessorised accordingly looks hot and feminine. Sofie, My friends wonder how I can wear sari to my workplace and I tell them this is the most comfortable apparel I can lay my hands on. Off late, I see many women wear saris . They could be going out to a mall, to a parent teacher meeting or a book reading session. It is comfortable and elegant. Sari is no longer reserved for marriages or sangeet ceremony. Now, I see women flaunting them to cocktail parties as well. It looks cool and feminine as well. jasmine@tribunemail.com |
Like women, like men
God made earth and man made google to find everything about it. So, when a doctor from the city mentioned to us, "Most of the voyages men undertook in the history were for two reasons, either wealth or youth." We resorted to google and found, hundreds of journeys were undertaken to Florida in search of fountain of youth and Tibet, to find Shangri La. Both the mystical places helped maintain youth. Centuries down the line, youth is still sought, the only difference being, men seek it like never before. They don't mind stepping in the women periphery; beauty parlours, spas and the latest trespassing has been in botox, fillers, liposcution and cosmetic surgery areas. "Men are doing everything that women used to do to look young. There is an increase of 25% in the number of men opting for surgical and non-surgical methods in the last three years to look less than their age," informs Dr.V.D. Singh, of VM cosmetic and plastic surgery center-22.
Botox is preferred by men to get rid of wrinkles like crowfeet, frown forehead lines. Fillers smoothen the lines, thereby reducing wrinkles. Facelift is a surgical procedure that helps reduce sagging of facial muscles, making them firm. The clientele just doesn't comprise the old, young men too are opting for these beauty treatments, "Men in the late 20's and early 30's from the corporate world are getting these treatments. On an average, 30 men get one of these modern treatments done in a month." It is the acute pressure jobs that are forcing men to go for these measures. Dr. K.M.Kapoor, head, cosmetology, Fortis cites an example, "A month back, a private bank manager, 38 got botox done. His reason was, he had started looking older than his age because of the stressful job. He had developed crowfeet and frown lines that made him look an odd one out in his team of young colleagues. There was a sea change difference in his looks before and after the botox treatment." The clientele generally includes the private firm employees or those in the glamour world. "Men in these two professions can't afford to look old. The young leader concept is a hit in the corporate world and now even in the political arena. Thus the prime motive behind getting these treatments done is to look younger." Some other non-surgical ways to have a young face is skin tightening through radio frequency and microderm abrasion. As for popularity of liposuction and facelift, he says, "There is a 20-30% increase in men opting for these procedures." The market that was earlier dominated by the NRI consumers is now witnessing a paradigm shift. Dr.V.D Singh gives the figures, "The ratio of NRI's to people from the region is 60:40 which suggests that people in India are equally aware of the latest medical facilities that aids looking younger." Dr. A.B. Prabhu, cosmetic surgeon, Chandigarh Medical center informs, "Middle age men are preferring a complete face lift to botox. The latter's effect fades after four months whereas facelifts' stays for minimum seven years."

Notes on a Netbook
Netbooks, laptops, and desktops all make great choice for use, depending on the purpose you need it for.
One difficult decision the users face while looking to buy a new computer is whether to go for PC or a laptop. When Netbooks were first introduced last year, they took the world by storm and now the decision what computer to buy becomes even more difficult. The option is not only limited to a Netbook or a laptop because there are still many cases when a good old desktop is the best choice. This is why you should know about the advantages and disadvantages of Netbook computers, laptops and desktops. Only then will one be able to present a reasonable buying decision. The Advantages of Netbooks
Netbooks are ultraportable laptop computers and they have many advantages, such as a 10" Netbook, not to mention 7" ones, don't take much space and can fit even in a handbag. Netbooks are really portable - for everybody. A 10-pound laptop is easily portable for a 300-pound male but for everybody else this is still a lot of weight to carry, especially when it is not the only item in the suitcase. Cheap Price is another major advantage of Netbooks. High-end Netbooks could cost as much as a low-end/average laptop but generally Netbooks are cheaper than laptops and desktops as well.
The Disadvantages
If Netbooks didn't have disadvantages, it would have swiped the laptop industry of its feet, but since Netbooks were launched as a low-priced computer, not as an ultra-powerful one, one can't expect that they can be used everywhere. Here are some of the major disadvantages of Netbooks: The small size of a Netbook means that its screen is small. Though the typical resolution for a 10" Netbook is 1024x600, which isn't much less than the standard desktop resolution, the pitch (distance between pixels) is smaller and that is why the onscreen image on a Netbook is smaller. For people, who are short-sighted, this could be a bit of a problem, though there are thousands of workarounds for it. A less powerful processor is another one. Netbooks ship with special processors (different from those in laptops and desktops) and these processors are less powerful. Still, 1.6GHz is quite enough for most tasks a typical user uses a Netbook for, so the less powerful processor is of that much importance. No CD drive, meaning nearly all Netbooks come without a CD drive. There are some Netbook models with a CD but this automatically increases their weight and takes their long and extended battery life too. No CD could be a disadvantage but when one has USB sticks, memory cards, or a cable, the lack of CD is not a problem for data transfer. Netbooks are not ideal but the advantages of Netbooks are certainly important. The disadvantages of Netbooks are not exactly intangible but they aren't that serious either if the user is an advanced PC user or if one knows these advantages and disadvantages in advance, he or she can make an informed decision if a Netbook is worth buying or not. I would say anyone who uses a computer for an extended period of time should opt for a low cost laptop rather than a Netbook because after using a Netbook for a few hours it becomes very
uncomfortable. amitpalsinghgrewal@gmail.com

Identity crisis
Manju@skyislimit.com, pradeepfilmi@yahoo.com, manishak3456@yahoo.co.in,
godsavetheworld@hotmail.com, neerajcoolstar@45979…did these sound weird, interesting, funny, strange. Well, they are. The kind of email addresses floating on line is certainly a figment of creative and whacky minds. But, what gets people to create such addresses, is the noticeablity or it is the heavy traffic that is forcing them to go in for such attention addresses.
An arts student from GCG-11, Preeti Sandhu, zeroes on uniqueness as the reason behind different kind of email addresses. "Preeti_Sandhu@yahoo.co.in, is a very regular Id. Now, if you look at my address aliceinwonderland@hotmail.com, isn't this interesting and different too? I feel nice when I give my e-mail address to someone. Firstly, I get that what! look from them, and then they admire this unique ID. You wouldn't believe, but my Id has inspired my other friends to create other addresses like this." Adding spice to the cyberspace are not only the E-mail addresses, people have equally strange passwords or better still uncanny ways of coining a password. Harkaran Choudhary, a dealer in mobile spare parts, offers when keeping a password keep two things in mind. "One, no one should be able to guess it in their wildest of imagination. And secondly, you can remember it." He explains, "I like roses and I like colour white. So, the password is whiterose. This is one very common technique but…" Harkaran then gets down to the weird ones. "I can tell you passwords, which read like catdogcatdog, shahrukhraaj, sheharm20779, shanidev, googlys#2#0#s, kakachor, rajeshruhilove…. are some of the examples. Sachin Sharma, student of biotechnology, on the other hand would like to stick to simple addresses and passwords. "I'd rather have something simple and easy to remember," he says. "I don't know why people create funny addresses and even funnier passwords." However, he has a logical explanation to these funny ID's. "E-mail Id's were easily available some years back. Now, there is so much on line traffic that every second person would have asked for a similar Id like yours. This probably could be the reason behind creating such ID's." Now, signing off this piece with a simple ID sounds a bit out of place. How about shimlacalling@gmail.com. But who wants people probing. So, here it

STAR SIGNS
"At one point, the whole boom in technology sounds scary to me," says actor of Nauheed Cyrusi of Lakeer fame. "I read on the Internet that pretty soon we would have human-like robots to give us company. Now, this is horrifying. However, if everything is used in limits then it is fine," adds the pretty-faced actor, who feels that time has taught her to handle her profession smartly. All said and done, hear it from Nauheed on scares and benefits of

Where are you: I definitely feel that Facebook and Orkut are the best places to find all friends. You wouldn't believe, I have found almost all my long lost friends through the social networking sites. Also, it is a great way to be in touch with fans and relatives. So, I am hunting more friends and reading up on the Internet whenever I have time. Check Check: The only and the glaring drawback with these sites is the invasion of privacy. The whole world comes to know what you are doing. And just about anyone can leave a scrap. I feel there should be some guidelines as to who can get connect to you and who can't. In limits: Today, I definitely can't see myself moving without a cell phone or an Ipod. These things have become almost a necessity. All the same, I think everything should be utilised within limits. Excessive dependence is not good. After all humans created machines, machines didn't create humans. Music & Masti: I am a music buff, and I don't travel without an ipod. English is what I am hooked to, and I upload new songs almost daily. Cool gadget: I find the refrigerator as the coolest gadget. Smart and utilitarian. Latest pick: I-pod speakers from United States. They are really smart and add to the experience of listening to music. |

MOCK TALES
Locker rooms, high-school proms, detension episodes; The OC, 90210, The Gossip Girl, Dawson’s Creek, in short Zee Café and Star World! In short, English soaps. By now, you essentially fall on either side of the fence; one that know exactly what we’re talking about, those who are as clueless as the lost Bo-Peep. Yes, English channels too have their own phenomenon!
Starting with the foremost, booze…no violence…actually drugs and smoke, all of them! Including speed and sex. Not only portray, depict but glamorise all to an extent enough to make a diva feel like a plane Jane. The dedicated viewers would vouch; Elite would be an understatement. Upscale, a misnomer. It’s an ultra-exclusive, swish and swanky world out there of the nouveau riche, where money is the ‘lastest’ problem and teens, the only inhabitants. Whatever the channel, serial or actor; there would invariably be a musical chairs of relationships, casual sex and rave parties. Break-ups are the only constant. So there’s a poor little rich girl, who’s the prom queen, always perfectly dressed et al and ‘searching for true love’. Her equally popular boyfriend notwithstanding; and in barges the ‘cute dashing hero’ violent, with troubled past but still ‘good at heart’. And against some of these basic plots are thrown in subsidiary stories of divorced parents, with live-in relationships, at loggerheads step or half sisters and brothers, who by the way could be half to double the protagonists’ age. Not to forget, in between there could be your best friend in a clandestine, scandalous affair with a teacher or your stepfather’s former wife! Huh! One’s forced to wonder…hey who’s playing the teen here? With parents as screwed and as much in need of counseling as the kids themselves, the programmes, in a way, authenticate rebellious wayward behaviour. Like we said, certain scenes are the constant, like an episode dedicated to detention, where all the bunch of unruly dudes and babes come together and love stories happen. Locker rooms, where the soccer dudes of high-school pick up an ugly fight. And the prom where the Greek God realises the true worth of specs wearing ponytail kinda girl from the class. Did we somewhere mention the costume part? All the girls are perfect manifestations of magazine cover models with every time new nail paints, perfect stilettos, straight hair and designer bags. This is even after being troubled and heartbroken and pessimistic! And how could we forget this? Smooching is a culture! Doesn’t matter with a stranger, or your best friend’s boyfriend! And as frequently as we blink! Those who’ve managed to count one episode without a kissing scene can consider themselves amnesic. Still , these fast-paced shows are quite a refreshing change . manpriya@tribunemail.com |
Rustic charm
So, do you smell something? The rustic village roads, whiff of rural air filling your senses, the bhaujis and jijis in full traditional display. The concrete giving way to grand old havelis, the Ammajis, dadisas and daddajis replacing well-suited dads and moms with subtle hints of grey in their otherwise perfect strands. Well, if you still don’t smell the change on the television then consult an ENT specialist.
After subjecting the tele loyalists to extramarital affairs, murders, conspiracies, and kidnappings, the small screen has moved on. The new mantra is tastefully traditional, moving towards the rural India and revolving around characters, which in every respect belong to the the real India. Setting the trend, Balika Vadhu became television’ s ray of hope against the growing attack of K-soaps. The rustic Rajasthani backdrop, Shekhawati havelis and real problems of rural India, it was followed by serials like Laado, showing a glimpse of Haryanvi village life, Bhagyavidhata, set in small town Bihar and Mitwa are adding their own countryside charm to television. “Television demands change. Earlier, the idea of showing rural India on small screen was considered too low, something that would have been considered an experiment. But now, when the urban India has been sold to a sauration point, Indian villages have suddenly become the epicenter of hit formula on TV,” says Harvinder Malik, a noted director and artist from city. Apart from this concept, the USP of these serials lies in presenting the grandeur of asli Bharat. “They are visually and culturally rich in content, something that was lacking. From costumes to the typical lingo, knick-knacks of daily rural life, everything has something new for the urban India,” feels Suman Moudgil, a housewife who is hooked to these ‘eyeopeners’. Her favourite character, she says is Ammaji in Laado, played by Meghna Malik. “She is the real village godmother. And her mannerisms and dilect brings out the Haryanvi flavour to the best,” she says. “They deal with the problems that rural has been facing since decades. The so-called elite and educated India was ignorant to most of the issues raised. Watching them helps in realising the gravity of the causes,” says Sumit Khanna, a student of five-year-law. His favourite comes in in Abke janam Mohe Bitiya Hi Dijo on Zee.“The rural lifestyle and perspective presented comes as a shock to the urban audience. Class-divide, forced marriages, infanticide, domination by the upper class landlords…something that is a part of everyday rural life may be sensational for city breds,” says Harvinder Malik. “Nobody is making Schindler’s List on television, the passion is lacking. But given the right time, it is going to touch another level.” he adds.Sure, no vigorous camera spin off’s or dead returning or slap hitting the same cheek thrice during a confrontation! All we can say is Happy viewing…

SPADE WORK The importance of water is realised only when it becomes a rare commodity. And it has become so now in the absence of rains. Otherwise too, what a rain can do much irrigation cannot. When people are struggling to meet their daily compulsory watering needs, the plants become last priority. But ask the true gardener, who would not like to loose even the leftover water in a glass and use it in a pot or basket. The ways have to be found. If the daily predictions of approaching monsoon are any solace to the gardener, they make little difference to plants that need their daily quota. It is very important to find out the ways to keep plants supplied with at least the minimum amount of its requirements. It would be better to fix priorities. It is no use giving water to a plant at the cost of others when that does not need it much. There are plants that show stress symptoms as temporary wilting and recover when given even a few pints of water. Such plants include coleus, crotons, vincas, zebra plant, impatience etc. They are sensitive, need more water and have to be given their daily quota lest they should wilt beyond recovery. Whereas, plants like schefflera, dracaena, Ficus species plants, asparagus etc fight more and can take stress more. Plants like those of palm type, do not show much symptoms in the early stage but the damage is revealed when it is too late and when once they start drying it is very difficult to bring them back to life. The plants in soil have lesser requirement than those in pots due to the limited space available and also the confined or pot bound root system. It is therefore important to first look after the potted plants and baskets. Amongst potted plants too, there are those that are more sensitive and you must have known it by now. Use of external aids is very important. In technical terms we call it ‘mulching’. The soil surface is covered by anything like grass mowing, wood shavings and straw or even black poly film. Use of black sheet is done in case of trees. Another benefit of it being a complete check on weeds. In case of pots too grass mowing, straw, shavings etc could be used. Besides, moss grass spread on surface also helps. In case where water stress is perennial, moss grass shreds could be used in potting mixture too. The moss is known to capture and conserve moisture for long time and is utilised by plants in the hour of emergency. It is said that the necessity is the mother of invention. You had been using plates under pots that capture the excess flow of water that is used by plants in hour of need. You can now get plastic pots with watering pots at the base. The water uptake is slow, need based and continuous. You can also go holidaying without much worry. The water rise with capillary action or the roots grow towards the source and take a dip coming out through the provisions at the base. Such pots with wicks could also be made a la wick stove, lamp or lantern. One end of the wick is in the soil mixture and the other being in water reservoir provided at the base. Shift as many plants to shade as possible. In the end, we know together one can fight better. Keep the plants in groups and they will shade each other and provide humidity more for longer survival. Madonna’s adopted daughter Mercy’s grandmother claims that the little girl was to be returned to her family from the orphanage she was living in. Lucy Chekechiwa, the maternal grandmother of the Malawian child, claims that the family never agreed to put the four-year-old up for adoption on a permanent basis. She insists that she had long fought to keep Mercy, whom the southern African country’s highest court ruled that Madonna could adopt earlier this month, and that she had only recently given up her long battle to keep her. “The initial agreement was that Mercy was to be kept in the orphanage for six years. After six years Mercy was supposed to be brought back here and then I would have taken care of her,” a publication quoted her as saying. “At first I didn’t want her to go but as a family we had to sit down and reach an agreement and we agreed that Mercy should go. The men insisted that Mercy be adopted and I won’t resist anymore. I still love Mercy. She is my dearest,” she added. Chekechiwa tells in the Channel 4 documentary Madonna and Mercy: What Really Happened, set for broadcast on Monday, that she had fought against the adoption for three years, but had finally agreed to let Mercy go. She revealed that Madonna first saw Mercy at an orphanage during her first visit to Malawi in 2006 with her then husband Guy Ritchie, and decided that Mercy was “the one”. However, Chekechiwa refused to let the little girl go at the time. Madonna finally decided on returning home with David Banda. Mercy’s mother Mwandida had fallen pregnant aged 14 to an older student at school, and died from complications of childbirth days after the girl was born. Mercy’s father James Kambewa claims being told that his daughter had also died, and that he learnt the truth only after being tracked down by journalists in April. He now wants his daughter back. He told Channel 4: “I am not supporting the adoption because I am still alive. I don’t see any justification why the girl should be adopted. But on the other hand when I learnt that my daughter is still alive I was very happy and I think I still need to raise her. It’s true that a child needs both parents but that doesn’t stop me from taking care of Mercy. I know I’m capable. I can do that.” The programme also investigates the links between the adoption and the Kabbalah-sponsored Raising Malawi charity, whose co-founder is Michael Berg, the co-director of the Kabbalah Centre. — ANI |
Late King of Pop Michael Jackson’s funeral is expected to be even bigger than Elvis Presley’s in 1977, when 75,000 fans lined the streets of Memphis. If that happens, Jackson’s funeral will become the biggest, the entertainment world has seen. According to reports, plans were under way on Saturday for a private service and public memorial for the music legend, whose body was moved to a private mortuary. A source close to the Jackson family revealed that the singer’s coffin was being kept under armed guard to deter ghoulish fans trying to discover its secret location. Jackson’s funeral is expected to take place on Wednesday or Thursday, believably, at the enormous Forest Lawn cemetery in Los Angeles. Following the funeral may be a public service, expected to claim a global audience as big as that of Princess Diana. Hollywood legend Elizabeth Taylor, 77, who was one of Michael’s closest friends, and Sir Paul McCartney, who sang with him but fell out when Jackson bought the back catalogue of Beatles’ music from under his nose, are expected to be among mourners. Mourners are also likely to include Liza Minnelli, Jackson’s former wife Lisa Marie Presley and Brooke Shields, Britney Spears, Justin Timberlake, and Madonna. Jackson was raised as a Jehovah’s Witness, who are forbidden from following funeral customs that are mentioned in the Bible, including rowdy wakes and alcoholic toasts. The faith is still followed by most of his close family, apart from brother Jermaine, who became a Muslim 20 years ago. Jackson was briefly linked to the Nation of Islam group but never fully embraced the Muslim faith. “The Witness path is the one Michael’s mother and father, Joe and Katherine, are anxious to follow for his funeral,” the Daily Express quoted a family friend as saying last night. — ANI |

Johnny Depp splashed out on the 45-acre tropical paradise in the Caribbean after discovering it by chance on a family holiday. “Like everything else in my life, it wasn’t planned, it just kind of happened. After I had done the first Pirates movie I went on vacation to escape with my kiddies and my girl and someone said there was an island down the road for sale. I looked at it, I walked on it and I was done. So I immediately called my business manager and said ‘Please!’ And that was it,” he told a publication. The actor uses the island to spend quality time with his family away from the media, reports a publication. “It came at the perfect moment. The island provides me with somewhere I can go where no one is looking at me or pointing a camera or a finger at me. When we’re there we do absolutely nothing. My kiddies don’t have any toys there and they build little houses out of shells,” he added. Depp has two children with girlfriend Vanessa Paradis. — ANI |

In fact, Miley’s Hannah Montana show has slipped below 2.5million viewers while iCarly star Miranda Cosgrove now leads the “tween market” with 2.7million. “Miley can only damage her career by allowing -risqué photographs to be taken,” a publication quoted a Los Angeles-based psychologist Fran Patterson as saying. Also a top Hollywood boss said, “Disney represents wholesome family values. The last thing they want is for their teen queen to look like a biker chick.” Moreover, according to reports, tickets of her concerts in big city venues including Los Angeles, Las Vegas, Detroit and St Louisare are still not sold-out as usual. But the singer’s spokesman is not losing hope, he said: “There’s plenty of time and we expect full houses everywhere.” — ANI |
