A city under water

YEAR after year Mumbai faces the arrival of monsoons with the fear of floods. The megapolis does not experience ordinary floods. These are devastating deluges that virtually drown the city, bringing normal life to a grinding halt. The National Geographic Channel brings alive the horror of the world’s sixth largest city submerged in monsoon waters in Mumbai Mega Flood on Tuesday at 9 pm. The channel follows the siege of Mumbai as all its systems shut down, with millions of people stranded helplessly. The channel also travels to other cities around the globe to see what tactics they use to prepare and cope with natural disasters. And some of the methods adopted by advanced countries can be an amazing ‘study tour’ for Mumbai’s civic authorities. — NF

America’s leading Hindu scholars are urging tattoo artists to learn Sanskrit before etching the script onto their clients, after noticing misspelled texts on Rihanna and David Beckham's skin.

According to the experts, Beckham's tattoo tribute to his wife Victoria is incorrect,as is one of Rihanna's new spiritual etchings, reported Contact Music.

"We are delighted that so many celebrities choose to pay tribute to Hinduism with tattoos but celebrity tattoo artists worldwide really should undertake some basic training in ancient Sanskrit language and culture to get them right. It must be embarrassing for the stars when they realise permanent marks on their skin are incorrect," said Rajan Zed, acclaimed Hindu scholar.

He adds, "Rihanna has two Sanskrit prayer tattoos, her latest is misspelled. Victoria’s name is in Devnagri script, which is commonly used to write Sanskrit. The tattoo on her husband David Beckham’s left forearm misspells Victoria with an added ‘h’- as in ‘Vihctoria’." Fortunately for stars like Jessica Alba, Angelina Jolie and Tommy Lee their prayer tattoos are spelled correctly.
