WITH
the world still grappling with the tragedy of Air France Flight 447
that crashed on its trans-Atlantic journey off Brazil, aviation
historians are busy recording some of the most mysterious air crashes
in the history of air flying. The Helios Airways flight 522 was one
such tragedy. Ghost Plane on Monday at 9 pm on the National
Geographic Channel unravels the mystery of Helios Airways flight 522
that crashed because of an astonishing series of errors.
Investigations revealed that the pilots ignored even the elementary
safety precautions, misidentified the warning alarms and failed to use
vital pieces of aircraft machinery during the flight. The final twist
came in the end when investigators discovered that air had leaked out
of the plane and everyone on board fell unconscious. Many
investigators were of the view initially that this was the handiwork
of some terrorists as no trained pilots could commit such a series of
mistakes. But DNA tests later proved that the two persons in the
cockpit were indeed members of the cabin crew and not hijackers,.
Sadly, by the time they realised their mistakes it was too late. Their
attempts to take control and land the plane ended tragically. Did the
Air France flight too suffer a similar fate? Only time and
investigations will tell!
