Wives cannot accuse corporate offices as the ‘other woman’ in their husband’s life anymore. Big bosses are now doing their best to involve the spouses in most office dos

What if your company decorated you’re bay with fresh flowers, sent you hundreds of greetings (even those you barely exchanged a smile with) to wish you on your special day and then if this was not enough, in the evening you had a bash of cake cutting ceremony; just like mommy used to do when you were small. Wouldn’t it be special? Yes, it would be, especially when it is an organisation’s initiative.

Though we keep talking about corporates and their long working hours and employee stamina of 12/6 hours, but what motivates these employees to work so hard is the effort that these companies build a special bond with their employees. Right from celebrating birthdays to anniversaries, some organisations even care to celebrate a new birth in the family. A sweet gesture that says more than words gets us talking about the corporate carousing.

“Though our office celebrates every occasion in the big way, what makes a difference is when we celebrate employee’s personal special days with equal fervor,” says Rajinder Singh, manager, HR, Idea. He adds, “It’s not only birthdays that we guys celebrate, but occasions like anniversaries, kids’ birthday, and birth of a new baby is also celebrated with equal zest.” Ask him what do they do on these special days and he says, “For birthdays, we have a cake cutting ceremony and lately we’ve started a new initiative to gift the employee a plant on his birthday. This is a special gift as the employee will have it forever and can see it grow with passing time. For other occasions, we have greetings and flowers to do the talking.”

That’s not all. Idea even has a spouse club and here special get-togethers are conducted for the better half.

“Making a difference matters,” says Rajinder. “Company is not only where you come to work. People should have a bond with the organisation and these small gestures are our way to say we care.”

For Aditi Srivastava, vice-president, INIFD, employee and organisation bond is very important. She says, “Employees are the backbone of an organisation and one has to work like a big family to achieve the targets. So, when it comes to making the employees feel special, there are a few ways; and one of them is to celebrate some special days with them. At INIFD, we make sure to celebrate birthdays of every employee. And for this we organise a get-together and have a cake cutting ceremony.” That’s sweet!

Airtel have their share of celebrations for the employees too. Continuing with their initiative for ensuring delight to their employees, Bharti Airtel gifts married employees a gift cheque of Rs 4,000 on their anniversary date, which is specially handed over by their reporting manager. On birthdays, for every employee it’s a bash — a grand monthly event, which is planned by the HR team to celebrate the birthday of each employee. The bash is a get-together that includes fun games, snacks and of course, the cake.

While most of the companies celebrate birthdays of the employees, Reliance Anil Dhirubahi Ambani Group also does with a bouquet of flowers delivered to the employee’s house. But this time they even celebrated their chairman’s birthday on June 2. “Though he was not present in the city, we had a formal cake cutting ceremony for him and a small get-together,” says Rupesh, head corporate communication, Reliance Anil Dhirubahi Ambani Group. He adds, “We have long been celebrating our employees’ special occasions, but this time we made it special for the boss. Other than that we have programmes for employee kids too. For this summer vacation, we have started a digital world programme at the Reliance world. Here the children of the employees can visit the Reliance world, play digital games and even surf the Internet.” At Tata Indicom, they too celebrate occasions like birthdays, anniversaries and birth of the child. Says an employee, “Celebrations are always there, but with us an employee is authorised to take a day off on his special day.”

That’s what we call true spirit of celebrations!

Workplace gaffes are hard to forget. No matter how hard you try, you simply can’t shake off the embarrassment. In fact, at that creepy moment you don’t have many options. You apologise, if it’s your fault, but if it was beyond your control, you just grin and bear it. Almost everyone has committed bloopers that leave one red-faced (well, if you haven’t, then you are a super being). What’s more, these slip-ups happen in front of the very crowd where ‘rep’ matters the most.

Lifestyle talks to city denizens to know about a professional faux pas they want stricken from the record. Says Shweta, a designer, who runs Daffodils-17: “One fine day a high-profile client walks into my boutique and buys stuff worth Rs 20,000. Pretty pleased with the deal, I hand her over the things and she leaves. At that moment, I realise that my mobile phone which was lying on the counter is missing. Without bothering to apply my mind, I called up the client from my landline number and started blasting her for having picked up my phone. She was shocked and told me that she wouldn’t care for a mobile worth Rs 15,000. Anyways, I get a call from her, telling me that my phone had accidentally come to her with the packet I gave to her. The client told me that she was another showroom and that I could come and collect the phone. Since, I could not leave my shop, I asked my friend to meet the woman.” I was feeling ashamed for having lambasted the woman, said Shweta. But I didn’t know that it was just a beginning and there was more embarrassment in store for me, she added.

“My friend reached the showroom mentioned by my client and found a man carrying a phone similar to the one I have. She just caught hold of him and literally dragged him to my shop. At the same time, my client came and gave the phone to me. It was such a big embarrassment. We both just stood there in cold sweat. We had to profusely apologise to that gentleman who was seething with anger,” recalls Shweta.

Nitin Khanna, regional head, ICICI, suffered a similar fate: “I had just joined the office. One day, I walked towards the coffee machine while talking on the phone. I saw a man standing there. Mistaking him for an office boy, (he wore a blue shirt that was usually the dress code) I asked him for a cup of coffee. Later, I was told, to my dismay, that the chap was one of the senior guys. I had to rush to do the damage control. I was lucky that my superior took everything in good spirit. I still shudder at the thought of having done such a thing,” quips Khanna.

Makeup malfunction, says actor and VJ Khushboo Kochar, is one of the biggest source of embarrassment in our field. “Imagine your false eyelash falling off in middle of a melodramatic scene,” she adds. On her biggest bloomer till date, she says once a top-notch director showed up at one of her shoots. “I didn’t know a thing about him but I pretended to very confident. As we were talking to each other, I asked him have you worked with director so and so? He looked at me, smiled and then softly said, “I am so and so.” I didn’t know where to hide,” she laughs out loud.

It can get really awkward at times, admits Dr Gaurav Gupta, a pediatrician. “Once while counselling a little girl on healthy eating habits, I went a bit over the top and told that she shouldn’t eat chocolates, chips, soft drinks, ice creams, burger or pizza… The girl interrupts me in between and asks, “Then what should I eat?” Pretty startled, I suggested dal, roti and vegetables. Unimpressed, this five-year-old got up and just walked out of the room,” says Gupta.

Perfect 10

In true Oscar-style, Ashutosh Gowariker's historical romance Jodhaa Akbarswept the International Indian Film Acadmey (IIFA) awards 2009 with a perfect 10 bag of trophies, being named the best film and fetching its male lead Hrithik Roshan the best actor award and Gowariker the best director award.

Priyanka Chopra was named the best actress for essaying the trials and tribulations of the style industry in Fashion.

The award for the best female in a supporting role went to Kangana Ranaut for her performance as a down-in-the-dumps model in Fashion, while Arjun Rampal walked away with the award for best male actor in a supporting role trophy for playing an unsuccessful and brooding musician in Rock On!

Abhishek Bachchan got the best comic actor for his performance in Dostana and immediately dedicated it to wife Aishwarya Rai and ailing Samajwadi Party leader Amar Singh.

The award for best actor in a negative role went to Akshaye Khanna for Race. Anil Kapoor received the award as Akshay had to leave for some personal work. Neeraj Pandey was given IIFA best story award for his critically acclaimed A Wednesday.

Lagaan was declared the best movie of the decade, veteran Rajesh Khanna was given the lifetime achievement award, Shah Rukh Khan and Aishwarya Rai were respectively declared the male and female actors of the decade, Rakesh Roshan was named director of the decade and double Oscar-winning A.R. Rahman was honoured with the composer of the decade award.

This set of honours were meant to commemorate 10 years of IIFA awards.

Rahman was also named the best music director for his soulful compositions in Jodhaa Akbar. The music maestro couldn't attend the event and Gowariker received the award on his behalf.

The best male playback singer award went to Javed Ali for crooning Jashn-e-bahaara in Jodhaa Akbar, while Shreya Ghoshal was named the best female playback singer for Teri ore in hit romantic comedy Singh is Kinng.

Well-known Bollywood writer Javed Akhtar won the best lyricist award for penning the song Jashn-e-bahaara for Jodhaa Akbar.

Aishwarya, the daughter-in-law of IIFA brand ambassador Amitbabh Bachchan, was honoured with a special award for an outstanding achievement in international cinema.

Director-turned actor Farhan Akhtar got the best male debutant of the year award for Rock On!, while Asin Thottumkal got best female debut award for action thriller Ghajini.

Jodhaa Akbar bagged the maximum technical awards at IIFA.

While ace designer Neeta Lulla walked away with the best costume design award for Jodhaa Akbar, best editing trophy went to Ballu Saluja and best art direction to Nitin Chandrakant Desai for the Hrithik Roshan and Aishwarya Rai starrer historical romance. Best Make Up award went to Madhav Kadam for the same film.

Resul Pokkutty, who made history by winning an Oscar for his work in Slumdog Millionaire, bagged sound recording trophy for Aamir Khan starrer Ghajini.

The best cinematography award went to Jason West for Rock On! and the best choreography award went to Farah Khan for the song Desi girl in Dostana.

Among the winners in the technical category, Farah and Jason were not present at the event. — IANS

Director's take

Director Kabir Khan is ready with his second directorial venture New York and says the film highlights prejudices against certain nationalities and religions across the world after the 9/11 attacks in the US.

" New York is based on part of the political canvas of 9/11, but it speaks of prejudices after the great human tragedy. It is a definite and very relevant subject about post-9/11 prejudices that have increased after the attacks," Khan.

"We have in fact divided time in a pre- and post-9/11 world in the film to highlight its obvious repercussions in times to come. The repercussions of the attacks are still very strongly felt globally and will continue to do so," said Khan who made his directorial debut with Kabul Express.

Set in New York, the narrative is spread over nine years and revolves around three young friends whose lives take an unexpected turn after the terrorist attacks. Produced and distributed by Yash Raj Films, New York stars John Abraham, Katrina Kaif, Neil Nitin Mukesh and Irrfan Khan in the lead.

It is releasing June 26 worldwide.

Kabir Khan, who shot the film in New York as well as Philadelphia, says shooting in New York came easy.

"They (New York Film Commission) were fully supportive, as it is not an anti-something film. It is a very balanced story and not a jingoistic film.

"Even the American crew enjoyed it. In fact, the last day of our shoot was the last day of George W. Bush's presidency in the US...the very next day Barack Obama took charge (as the new American president)," he said.

Kabul Express had showcased the autobiographical aspects of his stay in post-Taliban Afghanistan.

On being asked if New York also has such personal elements, Khan said: " Kabul Express was very autobiographical but 'New York' is a wider and much larger journey. Though it has been drawn from my experiences that I've seen and observed during 9/11, as I was there when it happened, it is not autobiographical at all.

"The treatment is more dramatic and more mainstream but eccentricities are very different. Instances like people's experiences with the FBI and the whole society getting paranoid and prejudiced...a lot of such observation, research and talking with people has gone behind the film," he explained.

Asked if it was in any way a tribute to the Indian victims of the disaster, he asserted: "I won't call it a tribute to any Indian who is a victim of the attacks. It's a great human tragedy and we can't trivialise it by drawing lines on nationality.

"The movie is actually part of a global and contemporary story. It's just that it's a Hindi film and the actors are Hindi protagonists. But the characters can be from any part of the world."

Apart from his directorial debut, Khan's two documentaries — The Forgotten Army (1999) and The Journalist and the Jihadi: The Murder of Daniel Pearl (2006) — too revolved around serious subjects.

"It's not about fascination. These are things that are dominating the world today and both my films are human stories set against these backdrops. However, it was not a conscious decision at all to make a film with a 9/11 context but while we were working on the story, it just got into it," he said. — IANS

Dream cabinet

Bipasha Basu should be India's environment minister because she was "the real reason for global warming all over the world."

This was the choice of International Indian Film Academy (IIFA) Awards hosts Boman Irani and Riteish Deshmukh who unveiled their dream cabinet before a packed auditorium at the Chinese resort here as the annual event marked its 10th anniversary.

The comic duo announced their choice that they said should have been appointed by Bollywood after the recent elections, much to the delight of the 15,000 strong crowd.

Director Ashutosh Gowariker should be agriculture minister for what he had done for the rural community with his hit film Lagaan; Raakesh Roshan, the coal minister because his successful film Koyla had shown that he knows everything there is to know about the black product; and Katrina Kaif should be the youth affairs minister because every youth wanted to talk to her, the pair added.

Aamir Khan should be home minister because all he did for eleven months in every year was sit at home and then just release a single film in the last month.

Akshay Kumar, shown on screen with his face on a Rs1,000 note, should be the finance minister because with the money he makes he could finance almost the entire population.

Slumdog Millionaire star Freida Pinto would do well in the post of minister for overseas and foreign affairs because she knew exactly how to start an affair abroad, Irani jested.

Always on the defensive, Salman Khan would make the ideal defence minister and Malika Sherawat could occupy the new position of minister for the upliftment of the downtrodden.

Others in the Irani/Deshmukh cabinet would be Sunny Deol as law and transport minister ; Yash and Aditya Chopra of 'Punjab Power' fame for their film Rab Ne Bana Di Jodi as joint power ministers; and Viveik Oberoi as telecommunications minister because he knew how to make calls quickly when necessary. — IANS

Holding a masters degree in commerce and education besides another in the finer art realms like dance) and Indian classical vocal, Richa Jain at 25 seems to be over qualified. She was recently in the city on the invitation of the Pracheen Kala Kendra for a baithak performance.

Born to the renowned kathak maestro couple Ravi Jain of the Lucknow gharana and Nalini Jain of the Jaipur gharana, Richa inherited, learnt and imbibed the best of both the worlds. She also received her initial training in vocal music from Ajit Kumar Mishra and is being currently trained in Hindustani classical music by renowned guru and exponent A.Maheshwar Rao of the Gwalior gharana.

Besides being a graded artiste of Doordarshan and All-India Radio (in light music), Richa has given several successful performances on stage and television, notable amongst them are Kathak Utsav, organised by the Sangeet Natak Academy at Vadodara, N.C.P.A at Mumbai, India International Centre and India Habitat Centre-New Delhi.

As a child, she acted in some TV serials and has also worked as an assistant choreographer under her guru for various productions and telefilms. She is currently working with the Central Doordarshan Archives at New Delhi as preview field expert. One of the major characterstics of her dance performance is Richa sings herself while dancing. Thumri, dadra, bhajans and ghazal her forte.

"The dance is a composite art and acting (abhinya), music, rhythm are essential elements but my training in vocal music has augmented my confidence and my dance performances, " she claims. As a young artiste Richa favours fusion with other genres provided both retain their sanctity, cultural identity and traditional flavour. The gifted dancer supported by a rich family legacy of Kathak and an academic excellence holds a bright future.

So, when among the current ruckus of online award portals, Hardik Trehan, a student of Frameboxx-34, says he's in the countdown too, there's not much to hold until the narration begins…

A psycho finds a reason to party by killing his parents in There Is A Reason For Everything. Interested? So was the International jury on the portal filmaka.com and the guy reached top 20, won $1,500. "My pre-production teacher gave me the storyline in one sentence and asked me to make a movie on the psycho." Psychic it is.

"I thought what better way than to depict a person who finds this reason to party. I myself only uploaded the movie on the portal," as he did with other movies, Let's Do It, a comedy and Avoid Rash, based on rash driving. Is the movie making mania inbuilt, inherited or what? "It all began when I was first given a project and had learned software editing."

A class XIIth student of DAV-15, Hardik is all set to learn visual effects at Frameboxx. "Visual effects mesmerize me more than animation. I mean, look at movies like Tokyo Drift or 300. They were amazing." Son of director Gaurav Trehan, Hardik wants to toe the line, but not exactly. "I want to be an actor when I grow up." As for now, it's all behind the camera work. "My next movie will be a horror film. Nothing's worked out yet but it'll be spooky."

Meanwhile, his Sprite ad has been put on mypopkorn.com. The commercial has a tale too, "A bunch of college friends are playing Truth and Dare in the canteen and Romeo gets a dare to ask his teacher whether he's wearing the underwear," he winks. How innovative can it get! — Manpriya Khurana

If belly bulge is your problem, here are some simple solutions listed out for you

Run, gym, yoga, diet, as many suggestions, as many people, you have to listen to them all. Bear with the glares of people who are ‘too worried about your belly bulge’. Another addition to the problem: sitting job of long hours that doesn’t leave you with enough energy to indulge in any other physical activity. So what are the easy ways to tame tummy? What can come to the rescue of people who have the usual job hours but unusual weight issues? Our gym and fitness trainers in the city guide us aptly.

Vikram Kapoor, GM, Ozone advices, “Take out some time for exercise in the day. If you cannot hit the gym, get a treadmill home and run on it for at least an hour.” He rules out the age-old exercise, crunches to lose the tummy flab. “It’s a misleading notion that crunches as an exercise is enough to keep tummy in a washboard shape. It instead strengthens abdominal muscles and doesn’t help in burning fat. Crunches though might help when done in totality with other exercises.” Diet plays an important role. Vikram suggests, “Don’t binge between the meals. If hungry, have a glass of milk or salads instead of junk food.” Little precautions help in the cause too. “When eating out, order whole wheat chapattis and if one wishes to have pizza, ask for a whole wheat base again. People in sitting jobs have minimal physical activity that might take a toll on metabolic rate, making it imperative to have healthy diet only.”

A brisk walk would in fact be the best option for those who have a sitting job and don’t have much time. Jasbir Kaur, proprietor, Oceanic sees brisk walk as the most viable option to reduce tummy flab. “A walk in the morning would affect the whole body. Also, that would fasten the metabolic rate, helping in quick digestion of food.” Another natural way to keep tummy flat is, “Try pulling your stomach muscles inside while doing any activity. That would help bring back tummy in shape.” One can also go for personal yoga and gym trainers these days who can visit your home as per your convenience and guide you rightly.

Yoga is another alternate that one can go opt for. Anil Juneja, fitness and yoga expert, FNY, Panchkula strongly advocates yoga to people who don’t have much time to exercise, “Kapal bhati is an easy exercise that one can do with an empty stomach while sitting on the chair. Surya namskar takes just ten minutes in a day. One should start it from two times a day to gradually increasing it to 108 times. It’s a complete body workout that helps in weight loss and reduces belly bump.”

Sachin Kalra The summer is the perfect time to take a few proactive steps to burn some extra calories, while developing habits that will eventually help to keep extra weight off. The top four ways to lose weight this summer include tips that can be easily added to anyone’s lifestyle, with minimal effort.

Drink up: Drink, drink and drink water. Put away the sodas, even the diet brands. Stop buying sweetened fruit beverages. Ignore the advertisements for milkshakes, cold coffee beverages and iced tea. Choose water instead. Water is a key component for weight loss. It has zero calories, helps with digestion and quenches your thirst better than sweetened beverages. Water also helps keep our bodies cool in the summertime heat and will help to rehydrate the body. Try to drink at least 12-16 glasses of water every day. To do so try these tactics:

  • Always carry a water bottle with you in the car.
  • Keep filled bottles on your desk so that you don’t forget to drink every half hour.
  • Add a twist of fresh lime or lemon for a zingy taste.
  • Make it a personal challenge. Keep a pitcher of water in the fridge, and drink it all by the end of the day.

Fresh veggies and fruits

Fresh vegetables and fruits are some of the summer’s best healthy treasures. Adding more fruits and vegetables to your diet will add health benefits, while providing you with a lower calorie meal. Most fruits and vegetables can be eaten without restriction, without worrying about adding too many extra calories. Double up the fruit and vegetable portions in your diet and use fruit as dessert to maximise the health benefits and weight loss efforts.

Think small: Our appetite often decreases when the temperature rises. So, take advantage and eat smaller meals. Rather than a going in for a five-course meal while eating out, opt for a sandwich with a bowl of fresh crunchy salad with dressing on the side. A great breakfast option could be a delicious fruit smoothie or milk shake (use low fat milk or curd). A handful of cherries or lychees can substitute for rich desserts. And if you really want that ice-cream, ask for the smallest cone possible. You’ll be pleasantly surprised that a smaller portion satisfies hunger just as effectively.

Use the hours

Take advantage of the longer daylight hours. Summer months are the perfect time for opting and actively pursuing a healthier lifestyle. The longer hours of daylight can encourage more physical activity than the darker winter days. So walk, swim, dance, play and get moving if you want to lose weight. A nice morning walk followed by a few laps in the pool or a good game of tennis in the evening, go a long way in keeping you fit.

Zzzzzz concerns

A good night’s sleep after a period of learning help brain preserve the most important memories, a new study has found. Using data from a group of 44 college students aged 18 to 22, the study findings showed that sleeping helps brain use selective process to store most relevant information as long as four months.

The findings were presented Thursday at the Associated Professional Sleep Societies annual meeting, in Seattle. The study was conducted by researchers at Harvard Medical School in Boston.

Think of sleep as a period of memory consolidation, where the sleeping brain calculates what is most important about a memory and selects the best candidates for long-term memory, said study author Jessica Payne, a postdoctoral fellow in psychology. “It may be that the chemical and physiological aspects of sleep underlying memory consolidation are more effective if a particular memory is ‘tagged’ shortly prior to sleeping,” she said. She added that sleep seems to selectively preserve memories that are emotionally important and relevant to future goals.

People awakened after sleeping more than a few minutes are usually unable to recall the last few minutes before they fell asleep, earlier studies showed. This sleep-related form of amnesia is the reason people often forget telephone calls or conversations they’ve had in the middle of the night. Before you pledge to give up fatty food to shed those extra pounds, here’s an important piece of advice - fat is actually an important part of the human diet. According to a panel of experts, fat is not only a source for energy in the body it also nourishes hair and skin in all living mammals. Antioxidants such as vitamins A, C, and E are also beneficial tools in the fight against aging and other skin problems. Studies have shown that lab animals deprived of essential fatty acid intake experienced dry, scaly skin; skin wrinkling; and hair loss.

However, high intake of essential fats can lead to other skin disorders such as acne and health problems such as obesity, type 2 diabetes, and certain cancers. Experts revealed that most of the individuals are lacking in proper balanced intake of dietary fats, antioxidants, and other beneficial nutrients.

Without dietary fat, the body cannot absorb certain nutrients such as vitamins A, D, E, and K. They say westernised diet-which is high in the consumption of red meat and saturated fats-correlates to increased incidences of skin problems such as acne and eczema as well as inflammatory health problems such as obesity and type 2 diabetes.

However, the non-westernized diets are linked to little or no occurrences of skin problems and reduced incidences of inflammatory diseases and disorders. It is high in fruits, vegetables, fibre, and unsaturated fats such as olive oil and omega-3 fatty acids (found in fish). The experts say that the best route to clear skin, a full head of hair, and a clean bill of health is a diet containing a low glycemic load. Karishma Randeva After doing some 20 shows in the past five years, Karishma Randeva of Hello Dolly fame is taking a break from work. Apart from enjoying a gala time with her family, she is also working hard to keep herself fit. This is how she is doing it:

My fitness mantra: Staying a happy and fulfilling life. Living a stress-free life is a bliss these days and since I am able to do that, I guess I am fit.

Fitness regime: I have hired a personal trainer who makes me do strenuous exercises, kickboxing and yoga on every alternate day. On the rest of the days, I go for a brisk walk. The regime has helped me lose lot of weight and attain better shape.

Diet: I am a foodie and tend to eat whatever comes my way, though I personally like home-cooked Punjabi food. My day begins with juice made of bittergourd, bottlegourd and cucumber. I take an egg with brown bread and lots of fruits in the morning. Lunch and dinner comprise of the usual Punjabi dishes, dal, rice, chapatti and a vegetable. But I skip my dinner when I gain weight and replace it with a chicken soup till I don’t get back into shape. Also, lots of water and fresh fruits are a part of my diet.

Sleeping hours: I try to get a seven to eight hours of sound sleep. Even when I am shooting, I try to complete my sleep on the sets itself.

Fantasy food: I don’t have any fantasy food as I eat whatever I wish to. I don’t think twice before having chocolates, cheesecake or brownies. I just can’t keep myself craving for food and believe in eating what I wish to. That too helps me stay stress-free.

wow body : It is certainly Shilpa Shetty. She has the best curves and perfect body from the very beginning of her career and has managed to keep it in the best shape always. Among men, Hrithik has the chiseled body.

Weight watch: So many actors in the television industry needs to go to the gym or do yoga. Thanks to Smriti Irani, actors feel any shape of body can work on TV. They should learn fitness lessons from Bollywood, where in everybody is so fitness conscious.
