Body art
What is it that
makes people radically reshape their bodies — from neck
stretching in Thailand to breast ironing in Cameroon to silicone
implants that enhance American female figures. In Taboo —
Body Modification on Tuesday at 9 pm, the National
Geographic Channel takes a look why we are either trying to
stand out, or trying to fit in.
The changes we make to our
bodies also define the very cultures we live in. The programme
shows some parts of northern Thailand where women of the Kayan
tribe stretch their necks to extremes, continuing an ancient
practice that showcases tradition, beauty and identity.
To the outside world they are
the ‘long necks’, wearers of shining rings of brass. But for
the traditional Thai people this is a common practice that
enhances beauty and elegance.
