Land of the midnight sun

Full of contrasts, Finland offers an interesting platter of unique natural phenomena,
adventure sports and fairytale settings, writes Gyan Marwah

FINLAND, the land of many seasons, attracts tourists from all over the world, as it is full of surprises. It is also called the land of midnight sun, as the sun keeps shining all through the night as well for a few weeks around midsummer, in the northern part of the country. A summer day can last for two months, especially in Utsjoki. Even in the south, the ‘night’ comprises a period of prolonged twilight only.

Finland is famous for a unique occurrence — natural lights dancing in the skies. This spectacular celestial phenomenon is called Aurora Borealis or Northern Lights and is caused by electrified particles emitted by the sun

Finland is also famous for a unique occurrence —natural lights dancing in the skies. This spectacular celestial phenomenon is called Aurora Borealis or Northern Lights and is caused by electrified particles emitted by the sun. The number of auroral displays can be as high as 200 a year.

It is truly a beautiful place and Finns are a very hospitable people whose country is neither too cold nor unapproachable. The country is pristine and natural and the people are respectful and quiet.

Santa country

The home of Santa Claus, the gateway to Finland is its capital Helsinki, a modern European city that has plenty to offer in terms of shopping, museums and nightlife. However, the real attraction for tourists lies ahead in the country’s northernmost province—Lapland, the land of Santa Claus, which offers reindeer rides, or sledge rides by dogs. You can also cross the Arctic Circle and visit the Santa village in Lapland, which has been a popular holiday destination for many visitors, many of whom come here during the winters, especially around Christmas, in the hope of meeting Santa Claus.

Another attraction is its serene tranquility and natural beauty. The majestic reindeers in many places here outnumber even humans.

Finland also provides an ideal location for adventure on slopes in form of snow sports or laidback holidays for those who prefer leisure. The tourism authorities ensure that fun and facilities begin the moment you land at a popular destination like Lapland. Not just your baggage; but they also provide the right thermal innerwear free of cost.

Eight-season cycle

While most tourist destinations will offer a variety of four seasons, Rovaniemi, the capital of Lapland, offers twice as many. It is a land of eight seasons, the ice break up, midnight sun, harvest, autumn, snowfall, Christmas, frosty winter and crusted snow, each having something unique to offer.

Apart from the reindeer rides, it’s the magic of gold that works wonders for the region. Tankavaara Gold Prospector Museum near Rovaniemi is the only museum in the world displaying the past and the present of gold panning and prospecting.

Finland also has many pubs, serving wines with authentic Finnish food, everywhere.

Traditional cuisine comprises salmon and reindeer, root vegetables, mushrooms and fruits. Each season has its own unique cuisine. Freshwater fish stew in winter, roast lamb at Easter, new potatoes and herring at Midsummer, crayfish in August, chicken and turkey in autumn and ham at Christmas. The traditional dessert is m`E4mmi, a pudding made from rye flour and malt.

Over the years the country has earned the reputation of being a fun-filled tourist destination.

There is so much beauty and places of interest in the country that the contrast it offers in terms of seasons and related activities is unparallel. Finland is one of the most beautiful and peaceful places for a truly amazing vacation. — NF
