Pinjore MC elections conclude
Kalka, December 30 Some of the senior citizen voters, including handicapped persons, also came to the polling booths on their wheel chairs to cast votes. Deputy Commissioner, Panchkula, Rajinder Kataria, and Sandeep Khirwar, Superintendent of Police, Panchkula, also visited some of the polling booths of Pinjore. As the special force of 250 police personnel had been deployed to maintain law and order, special vigil was kept on the most hypersensitive wards No 3 and 4. As many as 72 polling officers and 18 presiding officers were deployed in the 18 polling booths of 14 wards of the MC, Pinjore. Monika Malik, returning officer and Naresh Kumar, assistant returning officer, told that 75 per cent voting has been reported, compared to the 77 per cent in the last Pinjore MC elections in 2003. As many as 44 candidates, including 18 women candidates, contested the elections out of which five women candidates, including Chhinder Pal, Maya Devi, Avinash Kaur, Rajesh Kumari Rana and Nirmla Devi (nominated unanimously), have won the election, while 13 had to face the defeat. Maya Devi from ward No 7 has been elected thrice with a little margin of 22 votes. Kuldeep Singh Kikka (former president) has been elected for the second time from ward No 14, while 12 new faces, including Karam Chand, Gurcharan Dhiman, Satinder Toni, Amar Chand Dhiman, Chhinder Pal, Avinash Kaur, Rajesh Kumari Rana, Sanjiv Kumar, Tarsem Gupta, Krishan Kumar Lamba and Jagmohan Dhiman have been elected for the first time. Jagmohan Dhiman got the highest 826 votes. |

Youth’s Murder
Kharar, December 30 The accused was arrested today evening from Kharar. Ranjit's son Tony, who is main accused in the case, and Kirpal Singh alias Pal Singh and his son Sunny are still absconding. Sandeep was murdered on Sunday evening following an altercation over playing cricket near houses of the accused. Sandeep and his friend Gurpreet Singh Goldy had gone to play cricket in two vacant plots on Landran road. These plots were adjoining house of Pal Singh. The same plots are situated on the rear side of the house of Ranjeet Singh. When Sandeep and his friends were playing cricket and making noise, Pal Singh, Sunny, Ranjit Singh and Tony came out of their houses and started arguing with the youths. In his complaint to the police, Sanjeev's father Jaswant Singh said that around 6 pm, when he went to look for his son, he saw that Tony stabbed Sanjeev with a sharp-edged weapon. Sanjeev was declared brought dead at Kharar civil hospital. |

3 die of asphyxiation
Bassi Pathana, December 30 One of the labourers was admitted to a hospital in unconscious state.
DSP, Bassi Pathana, Rajwinder Singh Sohal said that four labourers burnt charcoal in a room to keep themselves warm. While three labourers died due to asphyxia, the fourth was rushed to a hospital, he said. The deceased have been identified as Jagjit Singh (30), Amandeep Singh (20) and Gurmeet Singh (50), all residents of Santemajra village. |
3 snatching incidents reported
Chandigarh, December 30 A case has been registered at the Sector 17 police station. In another incident, Neha Katoch, a resident of Sector 21, filed a complaint with the police alleging that two unidentified motorcycle-borne youths snatched her purse containing Rs 500 and some important documents from Sector 21 yesterday. A case has been registered in this regard at the Sector 19 police station. In yet another incident, Simi of Sector 40 filed a complained to the police that an unknown person on a black Activa sped away after snatching her purse containing Rs 2,500, earrings, passport and some documents from the same Sector. A case has been registered at the Sector 39 police station.
Shop burgled
Ramesh Kumar, a resident of Khuda Jassu, filed a complaint with the police alleging that some unknown persons
entered his shop by breaking locks. They decamped with Rs 9,000, jewellery and clothes on the night of December 28. A case has been
registered at the Sector 11 police station.
Car stolen
P.L. Kapoor, a resident of Sector 23 here, filed a complaint with the police alleging that his Maruti car (CH-01-F-9298) was stolen from his house on December 20. A case has been registered at the Sector17 police station. |

Stolen articles worth Rs 2 lakh recovered
Chandigarh, December 30 The accused used to conduct surveys and target houses where there was no activity for days. One of the accused told the police that he had committed burglary to celebrate birthday of his daughter while the other claimed that he committed the crime to raise money to purchase medicines for his ailing mother. The Sector 36 police station SHO said the accused have been identified as Babbla, Parveen alias Advani and Rohtash, all residents of Sector 52. The police has recovered 1.75 kg of silver ornaments, gold jewellery, a mobile phone and other valuables. The SHO said the accused had committed the crime at the residence of one Amar Singh in Sector 52 last week. They had stolen silver and gold ornaments and cash after breaking open the locks. Investigating officer sub-inspector Baldev Kumar said Babbla used to spend the booty on lotteries. The police came to know about it from sources and nabbed Babbla on December 28. During his interrogation, he disclosed names of his two accomplices, Parveen and Rohtash. Parveen was booked in a case of assault while Babbla was earlier arrested in a theft case. |

Baseball Tourney
Chandigarh, December 30 Delhi University was declared second while Guru Nanak Dev University (GNDU), Amritsar, and Kurukshetra University bagged the third and the fourth place, respectively. For PU Arshi, Navdeep and Daljit with two runs each were the top scorers. While Neha, Sandeep, Pardeep, Kuljit and Anju, too chipped in. Earlier in the first match of the day, which was played for the second position, Delhi University and GNDU drew the match with both the teams tied at 3-3. Monika, Preeti and Shalini scored a one home run each for DU while for GNDU, Sangeeta, Gurjit and Navjot scored a home each. However, on the basis of the previous matches point DU was awarded with the second position. Meanwhile, the men’s hockey team of Panjab University bagged the runners-up position in the All-India Inter-University Hockey (men) Championship for the session 2008-09 being organised from December 24 to 28 at Gurukul Kangri University, Haridwar. |
Manav Mangal girls fashion Haryana win
Panchkula, December 30 Maharashtra and Punjab won the first and second position, respectively. The Haryana team comprised of Aishwarya, Anu Saini, Aastha and Komal (all from Manav Mangal School). Results: Quarter final: Manav Mangal (Panchkula) beat Yamuna Nagar by 3-0. Semi final: Manav Mangal (Panchkula) bt Rohtak by 3-0. Final: Manav Mangal (Panchkula) bt Sirsa by 3-1. For bronze medal: Manav Mangal (Haryana) beat Kerala by 3-2. Aishwarya won both her matches and Anu Saini won one match for the team. |
Cricket Gold Cup
Chandigarh, December 30 Bharti Vij's St S Academy won the toss and elected to bat first, and scored 133 for 6 in the allotted 30 overs. Harmanjeet (76) was the top scorer. For the Sector-16 Cricket Academy, Sanjog (2 for 24) and Rajat (3 for 17) were the pick of bowlers. Replying, Sector-16 Cricket Academy showed good performance, and achieved the total in only 23 overs. Mega Pandey (37) and Sanjog (22) helped their team to get through in the tournament. Only Lakhwinder (3 for 39) of St S Academy could impress with his bowling effort. |

Chandigarh, December 30 With the help of a fine performance by the trio of Varinder Bhatia (64), Kamlehswar (28) and Raghav (31) The Indian Express team piled on a big total of 194/5. In reply, the HT team got bundled out on 126/10. For them, Rajat (50) and Bharti Garg (25) were the only batsmen who could score a respectable total. |
