On the Sufi trail

WILLIAM Dalrymple explores Delhi and one of most interesting mysteries of India —the ancient traditions of Indian Sufism. City of Djinns on Thursday at 9 pm on the Fox History and Entertainment Channel is a part of Dalrymple’s ongoing series on Indian Journeys where he has been exploring different shades of spiritualism in various parts of the country. This is an all-familiar territory for the author whose best-selling travel books on India and the Middle East have already made him one of the leading writers of his generation. In his earlier quest in the same series he followed in the paths of barefoot holy men to find the spectacular source of River Ganga, which lies deep in the glaciers of the high Himalayas on the border of Tibet. The author also visited the tropical state of Kerala, where the church is very powerful. Yet the Christianity here has to compete with a sea of different faiths and religions. So if you have missed the earlier parts of the series be sure to tune in for a look at one of the most tantalizing musical culture of the City of Djinns. — NF
