Airport At Sea on the National Geographic Channel checks out aircraft carrier USS Ronald Reagan

AT a time when the Indian Navy is about to acquire the Russian-built aircraft carrier Admiral Gorshkov, the National Geographic Channel checks out these sailing war machines. The channel brings the USS Ronald Reagan in Airport At Sea on Sunday at 10 pm and shows how its crew is trained for various deadly situations that could occur on this massive vessel. The carrier’s primary utility is to deploy air power to distant places without having to depend on local bases for staging aircraft operations. With such sophistication it is little wonder that the Indian Navy is keenly looking forward to its own aircraft carrier. The 273-metre-long Admiral Gorshkov would have 12 single-seat MIG-29s and four dual-seat MiG-29s and six Kamov helicopters. It would have a 1,610-man crew and provide a potent dimension to both the Navy and the Air Force.

Reality bites

Time was just a year ago when shows like Nach Baliye, Jhalak Dikhla Ja and Sa Re Ga Ma were a rave with viewers and guaranteed high TRPs. But not any more. The popularity of reality shows has dipped. Nach Baliye, on every Friday at Star Plus at 8 pm, when first appeared in 2006 it created a sensation and boosted the fortunes of Star One, the channel it was first aired on. It’s sequel a year later was again equally engaging. This year most of the reality shows — apart from Bigg Boss — are witnessing a definite downward trend. Experts say the slew of such shows has resulted in viewer ennui. — NF
