PLAYING the muse of Raja Ravi Verma is a childhood dream come true for actress Nandana Sen, who is not troubled by the controversies that surround the yet to be released film Rang Rasia.

"I have no fears about it," says Nandana, whose sensual portrayal of Sugandha has already created a buzz. The film had problems with the sensor board which had objected to some scenes. However, it was passed after some minor cuts.

"Indian mythological figures have fascinated me since my childhood and through the character of Sugandha I will be portraying all these immortal characters in the movie," says Nandana, who is the daughter of Nobel Laureate Amartya Sen.

Controversies and historical films have a very close relationship. Mehta’s last period film Mangal Pandey starring Aamir Khan had also faced debacle by various quarters.

Asked about her latest film facing similar fate, Nandana says, "We are not trying to sensationalise the subject. It is a very serious film and we have tried to bring the struggles of Raja Ravi Verma very sensitively. It would be ironic if something like that happens to this film as it would be a repeat of what Raja Ravi Verma and Sugandha faced 130 years ago," she says.

Talking about her character and what fascinated her to sign the film, Nandana says she was drawn to the charm that Sugandha possessed as the muse of Raja Ravi Verma.

"Sugandha was a strange mix of child-woman. She was very passionate, loving and sensual girl. She was also a very complex character with a mix of vulnerability and strength, and the fact that she was so beautiful to inspire an artist like Raja Ravi Verma makes her a dream character," says Nandana.

Ketan Mehta’s ambitious film stars Randeep Huda and Nandana Sen in lead character besides actors like Paresh Rawal, Aashish Vidyarthi, Sachin Khedekar, Darshan Jariwala, Rajat Kapoor, Vikram Gokhale and Suhasini Mulay.

The film, which will release in English by the name Colours of Passion traces the journey of India’s most celebrated painter and his relationship with his muse. The film is based on a book by Marathi writer Ranjit Desai on Raja Ravi Verma. The film will release in India next month.

The film, which was recently screened at London film festival, received rave reviews.

The actress says she was Mehta’s first choice for the character of Sugandha.

"Actually we wanted to work together since The Rising but somehow things did not work out at that time. When Ketan narrated the script of Rang Rasia to me I immediately fell in love with it," the actress says.

Nandana, who shot to fame after playing the younger sister of Rani Mukherjee in Sanjay Leela Bhansali’s film Black did not have much luck with her other films.

"It was a beautiful film but it harmed me in many ways as people loved my character so much that every director wanted me to be the same little sister," Nandana clarifies.

Nandana has been a part of Indian cinema for last 10 years but she has appeared in very few films. "I am very emotional when it comes to the career choices. I take up only those projects which I feel will be remembered as a good actress by the audiences. Besides I have been busy with international projects," she says.

After Rang Rasia, the actress will be doing her first Bengali film Kaler Rakhal by National Award- winning director Shekhar Das. The actress is also excited about her role in Zindabad, where she plays a reporter. — PTI
