Patiala, November 22 Immediately after the meeting, the parents expressed their views about the movie showed in the school. All parents unanimously supported the management and said showing English movies were a part of the education process. They signed the resolution that read “We, the parents of St. Mary’s School students vehemently refute the allegations made by media regarding the movie episode in the school.” The parents condemned the use of the term “blue film and X-rated film” for this incident. Principal said it was a politically-motivated conspiracy to defame the school and its management. The parents decided to form a body to keep a watch over any other incident that might harm the students. Principal of Our Lady of Fatima Convent School, Patiala, and principal of St Peter’s Academy also attended the meeting. |

Denied salary, employee commits suicide
Rajpura, November 22 The victim has been identified as Ram Pal, a resident of Mandiana village in Rajpura. According to her wife Labh Kaur, her husband was upset for the past six months due to lackadaisical attitude of a few officials of the Irrigation department in releasing his salary. She alleged that her husband failed to draw salary for past many months due to the indifferent attitude of the department officials. She said her husband, a Class IV employee in the department, committed suicide as he had failed to meet the daily expenses of their house. Demanding registration of a case against the department officials she said that stringent action should be initiated against those responsible for his death. Supporting Labh Kaur's claims, a large number of Punjab State Karamchari Dal activists raised slogans against the Irrigation Department and the police officials. They were demanding registration of a case against the erring officials. Meanwhile, the police officials said they would look into the matter and a case would be registered after the completion of enquiry. |

Murder mystery solved; 2 held
Bassi Pathana, November 22 A case under Sections 364 and 302 of the IPC has been registered against the accused. According to the SHO, Boota Singh, a resident of Badali Ala Singh, Harpreet Singh of Mehmadpur and Sukhwinder Singh of Mehdoodan were working in the SP Spinning Mills at Macchiwara. Boota Singh was employed as the mill driver. Both accused developed personal enmity with Boota Singh on some issue and resigned from the mill. They kidnapped Boota Singh from his native village Badali Ala Singh and took him to Bhakra Canal near the Mehdoodan Bridge on October 1. Boota Singh was thrown into the canal. As Boota Singh did not return home, his brother, Jasbir Singh, lodged a missing report with the police. SHO said both accused were arrested. During interrogation both confessed having committed the crime. |

Oils worth Rs 10 lakh destroyed
Kharar, November 22 Ropar Accident: Karnail Singh (38), a resident of Mirpur village in the Nurpur Bedi was killed in accident today, while his 35-year-old wife, Jaswinder Kaur and fiver-yer-old daughter, Harpreet Kaur, sustained serious injuries. The incident took place on the Ropar- Nurpur Bedi road while the family was on its way from Ropar to Mirpur village in the Nurpur Bedi block on a motorcycle. A truck coming from the opposite direction collided head on with their motorcycle. Karnail Singh dead on the spot. The truck driver is absconding. Jaswinder Kaur and Harpreet have been referred to the PGI, Chandigarh. |

Ambala,November 22 Gurpreet and Amandeep, who were on the way to Delhi, sustained minor injuries. Usha Rani, Gulabo Devi, Satya, Gyano, Ramesho, Jagdevi, Kanta, Devi, Randheer and Mohan, wo were in the Gypsy also sustained injuries in the accident.They were on their way to Sadhora for attending a rasam pagri. CAT directs dept of personnel to interview applicant
Chandigarh, November 22 Bhajan Lal, resident of Kurukshetra, had filed an application before the tribunal seeking directions to be issued to the department concerned to consider the candidature of the applicant for interview for the post of SI in view of the fact that he was medically unfit. However, the doctors of a private hospital later declared that he was medically fit after conducting a surgery, but the members of medical board expressed apprehension in accepting it. Bhajan Lal had applied for the said post in the CPOs in general category on December 16, 2007. He qualified in the written examination and asked to appear for physical entrance test on July 10 and July 11, 2008. He qualified in the physical entrance test. However, during the process of medical examination held on July 12, he was found temporarily medically unfit due to some ear problem. Thereafter, he got his ears treated from Virk Nursing Home, Kurukshetra, and appeared before the medical board for re-examination as per the directions given but the board expressed its hesitation for considering the candidature for the post as he got his ears treated from private hospital instead of a government hospital. Subsequently, Bhajan Lal got his medical examination from the specialist in the PGI who endorsed the successful treatment of the applicant. |

Man arrested for cheating
Chandigarh, November 22 According to the SHO, Sector 26 police station, Raghbir Singh, Ashok Kumar of Colony No. 5 reported that he had gone to the State Bank of India branch in Sector 7 to deposit Rs 25,000, which he had collected money from his fellow labourers. Being illiterate, he asked the accused to fill up the deposit slip. The accused handed a bundle of notes to Ashok saying that it contained Rs 50,000. He went inside the bank saying that he would first deposit Ashok’s money. The accused did not return and his accomplice also fled from the spot. Suspecting something wrong, Ashok checked the bundle of notes and found that it had only one Rs 500 note on a wad of papers. He raised an alarm and people gathered there. They managed to nab one of the tricksters and handed him over to the police. The SHO said the accused had been identified as Parmod Kumar of Matihari district in Bihar and a case of cheating and criminal conspiracy had been registered against him. In another incident, the police arrested Sheela Devi of Mauli Complex and her accomplices on the charges of illegally occupying a house belonging to Hari Parshad of the same locality. Parshad told the police that his house was occupied when he was away to his native village. A case has been registered in this regard. Robbery bid Wazid, a resident of Burail, has filed a complaint with the police that Mohamed Kasim of Kathua in Jammu and Kashmir was caught red-handed while he entered his house with an intention to commit a theft. The police arrested the accused and registered a case. |

Teenager held for raping 4-yr-old
Chandigarh, November 22 The accused sells bangles and artificial jewellery in the village and was a frequent visitor at the victim’s residence. According to the investigating officer, sub-inspector Rajdeep Singh, the accused, Hashim, entered the victim’s house at around 5 pm. The victim was lying on the bed while her eight-year-old brother was watching the TV. The victim’s parents were not at home at that time. Rajdeep said the victim’s brother came to know about the incident when he heard his sister’s cries. He saw Hashim was removing clothes of her sister. The victim’s brother pounced upon him to save his sister, but Hashim overpowered him. After the accused left, the victim’s brother raised an alarm. The neighbours gathered there and informed the police. The police arrested Hashim and took the victim for medical examination to the Sector 16 Government Multi-Specialty Hospital. The doctors said the victim’s condition was stable. A case has been registered. In another incident, Inderjit Singh of Shri Guru Harrai Complex, Sector 67, Mohali, lodged a complaint alleging that Kuldip Uppal of Ambala abducted his 23-year-old daughter from her office in Sector 34 on November 18. A case under Section 366 of the Indian Penal Code has been registered at the Sector 34 police station. |

Landlord-tenant dispute, 2 assaulted
Mohali, November 22 According to the police, Gurvinder Singh, Amrinder Singh, and their accomplices, attacked Manjeet Singh and Harvinder Singh, their landlords, while they were coming out of the court after hearing the case between both parties. Nobody was injured in the incident. A case has been registered against Amrinder Singh, Gurvinder Singh and seven others. Dowry Case: The local police today registered a case against eight persons on a complaint lodged by Shabnam, a resident of Mohali. According to the police, Shabnam had lodged her complaint on October 2. In it she had alleged that her husband had asked her to bring Rs 2.50 lakh from her parents. She was assaulted after she refused to seek money from her parents. The accused has identified as Dilbag Singh, a resident of Mohali, Babu, Tarsem, Jaswinder Kaur, Lali, Rajinder Singh, Gurmukh Singh and Sita. She alleged that her in-laws had been harassing her for bringing insufficient dowry. A case has been registered against the husband and in-laws. Liquor boxes seized: About 230 boxes of liquor were seized after the Derabassi police was tipped off about the movement of a canter. These boxes were being smuggled out of Chandigarh. The vehicle was intercepted near Ramgarh-Kakrali road and 185 liquor boxes seized. Nirbhay Singh of Ambala who was driving the vehicle has been arrested and the vehicle impounded. The driver was on his way to Mubarikpur. Meanwhile, in an another incident at least 45 boxes of liquor were seized from Sukdev Singh, a resident of Patiala. His jeep has been impounded. Cases have been registered against both accused. |

Three tricksters held
Chandigarh, November 22 According to the SHO of the Sector 36 police station, inspector Anokh Singh, the trio has been identified as Roshni (22), Naseema (50) and Babbu (22), all hailing from Bijnour in Uttar Pradesh. The SHO said the jeweller, Gopal Krishan of Swaran Ganga Jeweller shop in Sector 35 had reported on Friday that a man and two women had taken away 45 gm of gold from his shopping after posing as customers. He had the footage from a close-circuit TV camera with him. The police flashed the information, along with the footage, to the all police stations in the city and nearby areas. The trio today went to a jeweller’s shop in Sector 7, Panchkula. The jeweller recognised them as the jewellers had flashed information about the suspects in the city to make each other aware of the presence of the miscreants. The jeweller informed the police, which reached there and questioned the suspects. The Panchkula police informed its UT counterpart, which arrested the accused. The SHO said the accused appeared to be hardened and were not divulging details about themselves. The police has yet to recover the gold ornaments from the accused. |

Mini-truck knocks down motorcyclist
Chandigarh, November 22 The victim has been identified as Mangat Ram of Mauli Jagran. He was in his mid-thirties and was working in a private company as an accountant. The police said the accident took place at around 9.30 pm when a speeding Mahindra Pickup (CH-03-3330) rammed into the victim’s motorcycle from the rear. The victim died on the spot. The driver of the vehicle fled the spot leaving the truck behind. The victim is survived by his wife, two minor children and a widow mother. He was sole breadwinner of the family. The police has registered a case of causing death due to rash and negligent driving against the truck driver. |

Alwar resident booked for fraud
Chandigarh, November 22 According to the police, Jagnand, manager in Bhushan factory, said he met Chabu about a fortnight ago. Chabu told him that he dealt in gold and gave him 7.50 gm of gold for Rs 13,000. Finding his rate less than the market, Jagnant got lured and they struck a deal. Chabu told Jagnand to meet him today at the Mani Majra bus stand and he would sell one kg of gold to Jagnand . Chabu told him to bring Rs six lakh to buy the gold. They reached at the appointed place and Chabu asked him to give the money, but was not hesitating to give away his bag. Jagnand got suspicious and called the police.The police searched Chabu’s bag, which was empty. A case of cheating was registered against Chabu on a complaint lodged by Jagnand, the police said. |
Jeev climbs to tied fourth spot
Chandigarh, November 22 Jeev, who virtually sealed the Asian Tour’s Order of Merit after his triumph in Singapore last week, shot five birdies against a lone bogey to remain in the hunt heading into the final day tomorrow. He is just three strokes behind the leader Oliver Wilson of England. Jeev said: “I’m comfortable with the way I’m playing. I’m confident and looking forward to tomorrow, see what comes my way. This tournament has a lot of history and the set up is fantastic. It’s great to be here”. “It's going to be a great day tomorrow. I will keep doing what I’m doing and that’s where I get those 62s and 63s, but I think it will all come down to putting,” Singh, who was the 2006 Asian Tour’s Order of Merit winner, said. Jeev (71,63, 66), winner of three titles this year, made the turn at one under after sinking birdies on the third, sixth and bogeying the ninth. He, then picked up the pace by sinking three birdies on the 11th, 13th and 15th to close with a four under par 66. Jyoti Randhawa (71,68,66) also shot a four under 66 on day three to take his total to five under 205 and climbed from his overnight tied 46th position to be tied 25th. Gaurav Ghei’s three under 67 on day three propelled him from tied 61st to tied 42nd spot. His total now reads three under 207 (71,68,66). England’s Oliver Wilson blasted a five-under-par 65 for the third round lead with Chinese Taipei’s Lin Wen-tang in hot pursuit. Wilson holed six birdies against a lone dropped shot for a 13-under-par 197 total, while Lin enjoyed a bogey free 64 to lie in second place at the Hong Kong Golf Club. Former winner Bernhard Langer of Germany, who won the event back in 1991, was two strokes off the pace when he fired an impressive 63 to lie in the third spot. Judge, Barara share lead in NRIs’ Golf
Chandigarh, November 22 But today’s best gross card of 77 was fired by Surinder Bhangu with Kharak Singh at 78, recording the second best card of the day. The best score for the day was fired by Tony Barara at 65 with Ajit Singh and P.K. Mehta tied for the second spot at 67. But, because of a better back nine, Ajit was declared the runner-up. With the last round of the event for NRIs concluding tomorrow at the Panchkula Golf Club, the final round promises to be an exciting affair with seven golfers within a margin of four strokes. Judge played a bad front nine conceding five bogeys for a five over 41. But, a two over back nine saw Judge finishing at 79 for a two-day tally of nine over 163. Kharak Singh was also tied at 163 for the Budget Signs Trophy. In the contest for non-NRIs, Kamal Cheema emerged the day’s champion firing a four over par 76 with Lt Col R.S. Grewal and Prithvi Singh tying for the second spot at 78. But, because of a better back nine, Colonel Grewal was declared the runner-up. The best among non-NRIs was a 66 by Lt Col R.S. Grewal.R.S. Chandigarh, November 22 He added that the IATA and Apollo Tyres’ Mission 2018 Challenge had no differences and they were not trying to bully each other rather were working hand in hand for the betterment of the sport. “The IATA and we have same goals to try and build players for the country.” Mahesh, who holds the largest number of Grand Slam titles by any Indian, is in the city for the scouting of the Apollo Tyres’ Mission 2018 Challenge season-II, which kick started its campaign this year from Chandigarh. The campaign, which is aimed at creating India’s first singles’ grand slam tennis champion by the year 2018, will do scouting for young talent between the age group 6 and 14 years in four locations, including Chandigarh, (November 22 to 23), Ahmedabad (November 29-30), Chennai (December 13-14) and Hyderabad (December 20-21). A team of experts led by Mahesh Bhupathi will identify the most promising youngsters for India and will nurture and groom under the programme. |
