The curtain call: Kyunki Saas Bhi Kabhi Bahu Thi has been on air since July 2000

Finally Kyunki Saas Bhi Kabhi Bahu Thi is set to go off the air from November 10. The curtains could be coming down on other seemingly never-ending soaps. The list of the long-running shows is long. Crime thriller CID on Sony recently completed 11 years on-air. But the all-time champ is the music show on Zee TV Sa Re Ga Ma Pa Challenge that started in 1995 and is still going strong. Gone are the days when a Nukkad or a Wagle Ki Duniya ended after a decent 13 or 26 episode run. Nowadays as long as a man and his mistress are not parted, as long as his wife can keep her extramarital affair a secret, couch potatoes will lap it all up. Excess, apparently, is the path to success when it comes to television.

God returns

FOUR years after he played God in Bruce Almighty, Morgan Freeman will be back once again in the role of the Almighty in this 2007 sequel Evan Almighty on Saturday at 9 pm on HBO. Like in the earlier version, God appears before a newly-appointed Congressman Evan Baxter (Steve Carell) and tells him to build an ark to save the people from an impending flood that would otherwise cause havoc in the near future if no action is taken right now. A disbeliever, Evan begins to have second thoughts when tools to build an ark arrive at his doorstep and a variety of animals begin hounding him. A beard appears on his face that just won’t go away. Though the multiple visual effects provide the film with slickness, it is the comic synergy of the script that will keep you laughing from start to finish. — NF
