Eyes on sale: Rajpura police summons Ambala doctor
Ambala, October 6 According to hospital sources, Dr Goel met the inquiry officer of this case at Rajpura. He also carried the record of the post-mortem with him. The police asked him whether the eyes of Lallan Shah were intact when he conducted the post-mortem of his body. The sources said the doctor also shown the post-mortem report to the Punjab Police in support of his statement. PMO of the civil hospital Dr OP Arya had stated that in the post-mortem report, both eyes of Lallan Shah was reported intact. Lallan Shah, a resident of Bihar who had been working in a factory near Ambala, was killed in a road accident on G.T. Road at Ambala City on October 1. Dr. Goel had conducted his post-mortem on October 2 and handed over the body to his son Kallu Shah. The body was cremated at Ambala City but his family members took the ashes to their native village in Bihar. According to an information, the postmortem of six bodies are conducted every month. The hospital authorities had maintained a registered of the bodies which are brought to hospital mortuary for post-mortem. The number of unclaimed body was very low, the sources said. The unclaimed bodies are handed over to the police after the post-mortem. |

One killed in accident
Kharar, October 6 Varinder’s friend Gurvinder Singh, a
resident of Bassi Pathana, told the police that both of them were returning after
work from Godrej factory in Mohali. At around 5.45 pm, when they reached near Lakhnaur barrier, a Tata 407 vehicle hit them. Both were rushed to Guru Harkishan Charitable Hospital, Sohana, where Varinder was declared brought dead.
The police has booked the unidentified driver
of the vehicle.

Convocation at Thapar University
Patiala, October 6 Dr A. Sivathanu Pillai, distinguished scientist and chief controller, research and development, DRDO, and CEO and MD, BrahMos Aerospace, was awarded the Doctor of Science (Honoris Causa) for his outstanding contribution to the field of defence research and development. New facilities at the university, including the faculty chambers and MBA and undergraduate blocks, were inaugurated. Gautam Thapar also laid foundation stone of the sports complex. |

Youth fest begins at DAV school
Patiala, October 6 The festival started with lighting of the traditional lamp along with recitation of Veda mantras by the chief guest. Prominent among the present were Manju Mehta, controller-examination, DAV Education Board, New Delhi, P. P. Sharma, regional director, Patiala and Jalandhar zones, Dr Puneet Bedi, principal, MCM DAV College, Chandigarh, and principals of DAV Public Schools of Nabha, Rajpura, Ludhina, Patran and Jaitu. Various competitions like Veda mantra, patriotic and welcome songs, skits, debate and declamation contests in English, Hindi and Sanskrit were held. On-the-spot painting, greeting-card making, rangoli, folk dance, classical and light vocal (solo) will be also be organised in the next two days. The festival will continue till October 8. |
CBSE kho-kho tourney starts
Rajpura, October 6 As many as 59 teams of boys and girls from various schools of Muktsar, Bathinda, Mansa, Patiala and Sangrur districts of Punjab, and Yamuna Nagar, Kurukshetra, Kaithal, Fatehabad and Sirsa districts of Haryana are participating in the under-19 championship. The inaugural matches of boys and girls were played between MDN Senior Secondary School, Kaithal, and Maharishi Vidya Mandir, Kurukshetra, and Scholars Public School, Rajpura, and Aadharshila. |

Girl stands by complaint
Chandigarh, October 6 Judicial magistrate P.K. Lal recorded the statement in which the victim stood by the complaint that was registered by Bir Pal, neighbour of the accused. The accused Chander Pal, 31, a resident of Rajiv Shahpur Colony, Sector 38 West, had been raping her daughter, who is around 15-year-old, for the past four years. According to the police, Chander Pal not only raped her but also threatened her. Chander was looking after the girl for the past 11 years. |

Thieves take fancy to car stereos
Panchkula, October 6 The incident took place in Sector 4 where the owners of the vehicles woke up in the morning only to find their vehicles parked in front of their houses with broken windowpanes and without valuable accessories. This is the second such incident in the area. The first incident took place on September 15. The police is of the view that it may be the handiwork of one gang as the modus operandi in both cases is the same. Om Parkash, a resident of the area, claimed that he spotted a radio cab in the area that night and informed the police about it. “I called up the police immediately, but I am not aware whether the police came or not,” said Om Parkash. The cost of the stereos and other stolen belongings runs into lakhs, say the victims. “My Santro was parked just outside the gate of my house. In the absence of any police patrolling, the thieves dared to strike even there,” said Rakesh Chadha, a contractor. “There are security guards in the area, but all arrangements “have failed to check such incidents,” he added. “The incidents of theft are on the rise and we are not feeling safe here. The authorities must intensify vigil and patrolling during nights so that the residents feel secure,” said another resident Pankaj. Meanwhile, a case has been registered and hunting for the accused is on. |

Man dies in mishap
Zirakpur, October 6 According to the police, Bedi, a resident of Silver City extension 2, Zirakpur, was coming from his society when the accident took place yesterday. The commuters noticed the accident and immediately informed the family members of the deceased who rushed him to the GMCH-32, Chandigarh, where his condition was termed critical. He was referred to PGI where he succumbed to his injuries last evening. The driver of the car managed to flee from the spot, leaving behind the car. The body of the deceased was handed over to the family members after postmortem. According to sources, the deceased was a writer and contributed many articles for Punjabi and English newspapers. He was cremated today at Sector 25, Chandigarh. A case has been registered against the driver at Zirakpur police station. |

Motor cycles stolen in city
Chandigarh, October 6 In another incident, Navdeep Kamboj, a resident of Sector 15, reported to the police that his Pulsar motor cycle (PB-61-A-0497) was stolen from his residence on October 4. Two separate cases have been registered under Section 379 of the IPC at the Sector 11 police station. Theft
Rajan Kumar, a resident of Ram Darbar, in a complaint filed with the police, alleged that one gold necklace, one gold chain, a pair of ear rings, mobile phone and Rs 3,500 cash was stolen on the night of October 4. A case under Section 380 of the IPC has been registered at the Sector 31 police station. In another case, Heena Patel, a resident of Gujarat, filed a complaint with the police that Anil Kumar, a resident of Bhiwani, stole three mobile phones and Rs 17,000 cash from Panchayat Bhawan-28 on October 5. A case under Sections 380, 457 and 411 has been registered at the Sector 26 police station. The accused has been arrested and the items have been recovered. |

Panchkula clinch overall trophy
Panchkula, October 6 As many as 23 paddlers from the district won four gold, two silver and two bronze in team events and six gold and four bronze medals in individual events. Out of the total number of Panchkula paddlers, 16 were from Manav Mangal School, Sector 11. “For me it is just like a double delight. Firstly the district has won the feat for the first time and secondly most of the medals were won by the players from the school,” said Sandeep Sardana, principal of the school and president of Panchkula district Table Tennis Association. HP stun Punjab in quarters
Chandigarh, October 6 After winning the toss, HP decided to bat first and piled up a total of 116 runs in 15 overs. Rajnesh scored blasting 57 runs in just 32 balls. Rohit Rathi of Punjab took 3 wickets. Batting second, Punjab could manage only 85 runs and was bowled out in 13.1 overs. Only two batsmen scored above 20 runs (Karamjit 22, Manwinder 26). Mohit and Ashish took 3 wickets each and Ramesh took 2 wickets for Himachal Pradesh. In the second quarterfinal, Delhi defeated Bihar by 9 wickets. I want to make lawn tennis popular in
Chandigarh, October 6 Abdullah is in Chandigarh from the last one year under “bonding beyond boundaries through sports” project in which four boys and three girls from four Commonwealth member countries were selected to live, study and train in lawn tennis in Chandigarh. It was Abdullah’s dad, who enthused his interest in the game. Abdullah started playing the game as a fun activity but later it became his life. He has already been ranked No 1 among under-14 lawn tennis players in his country and has won many accolades in the discipline. This sixteen-year-old tennis prodigy gives the credit of his success to Fan Ph Hoa, national coach, the Tennis Association, Brunei Darussalam. “I am here today because of his efforts, he was my first coach and he taught me the basics of the game,” he says. |
