‘Goal difficult but not impossible’
Chandigarh, September 24 Where Sharath is targeting to clinch top honours in Commonwealth Games 2010, scheduled to be held at New Delhi, Neha is looking forward to the 2012 London Olympics. Talking to this correspondent at Table Tennis Hall at Sector 23, where both Olympians come to participate in the All-India Public Sector Undertaking Table Tennis Tournament by the Airport Authority of India, the players said the Beijing Olympics had made large impact on their lives as well as the game. “Now we feel more confident and have become more responsible. Definitely, the experience at Beijing, which is also (China) the powerhouse of the sport, will come handy in the coming big events”, asserted Neha and Sharath. Sharath, who lost in the second round in men’s singles to China-born Australian Weixing Chen by 5-11, 12-14, 2-11, 11-8, 10-12 at Beijing, is not fully satisfied with his performance there. “This was my second Olympics and I went there with big dreams. People, too, had expectations on me. Though I could not make it big there, I got a chance to learn lot of new trades of the game”, said the world’s 76th ranked player. On the other hand, Neha, whose was the first Olympics’ outing, enjoyed the every bit of the moment there. “The Beijing Olympics has transformed me from common sportsperson to a public figure. Now, people have started recognising me. But this also brings in more responsibility as well as expectations of the people. Experience at Beijing has totally changed my approach”, feels Neha, whose challenge was ended in the preliminary round in women’s singles at Beijing by Australian Jiang Fang. Both Olympians feel that the game is quite popular in the country but there is need to steer it to right direction. Sharath, who has been playing for San Sebastian Club at Madrid, Spain, since 2006, feels that there is lot to do to improve the standards of the game. “Undoubtedly, the sport has been progressing step by step here. Still, there is need to streamline the training part. In Spain, we used to play competitive matches with quality players every weekend. Here in our country, we lack regular practice sessions. Besides, there is drastic need to increase the number of competitive tournaments here”, said Sharath. Neha, who is at 249th number in world ranking, is planning to attend camps at Serbia and China, besides participating in the forthcoming events, including Youth Commonwealth Games to be held at Pune in October. “Definitely, I am preparing myself for the next Olympics. The way to reach the goal can be hard but not impossible”, summed up
Neha. |
