Bridge collapse hits life in 20 villages
Hulka (Banur), September 23 The bridge, built on a choe carrying waste water from Chandigarh, was eroding due to rains for the past one week, but no government official reached the spot to get it repaired, alleged the area residents. Now, it was completely damaged and it should immediately be reconstructed, the villagers said. The area residents said the schools, grain market, factories, working places and other important institutions were in Banur only and they were facing problems. "Even the other routes are badly damaged as the metallic road has developed big pot holes," said Sarwan Singh of Urdan village. "Now, we have to cover at least 10 kilometers extra to reach at these places. Children are getting late for school everyday. Farmers cannot reach grain market and factory workers, too, fail to reach in time," said Khajan Singh, block samiti member of Hulka village. He pointed out that the choe, on which the bridge was made, carried waste water from Chandigarh upto the Ghaggar river. The villages, which are affected due to the bridge collapse include Khanpur, Ucha Khera, Khera, Bhatist, Hulka, Urdan, Nadiali and many others. Jaswant Singh, sarpanch of Nadiali village, said the bridge collapsed as trees got entangled on both sides of the bridge and the water took away the major portion of the bridge. He said the bridge was in a dilapidating condition for the past sometime. Demanding reconstruction of the entire bridge, he said thousands of people were suffering due to the bridge collapse. The matter would be brought into the notice of senior officials if nothing was done in this regard, he said. Meanwhile, SDM Gurtej Singh said nobody had brought the matter into his notice. Efforts would be made to solve the problem, he said. |
