Doctors welcome medical Bill
Tribune News Service

Patiala, September 21
The Bill pertaining to “Medicare Services and Medical Professionals Protection of Violence Act-2008” in the Punjab Assembly by the state government has been declared as a welcome step by medical professionals of Punjab.

The Indian Medical Association (IMA), Punjab unit, said the Bill would benefit patients as sometimes doctors used to refuse serious patients due to fear of untoward incidences of assault on them and their hospitals by the unsatisfied relatives of such patients.

Dr Daljit Singh Cheema, adviser to the Chief Minister, Punjab, said after the passage of the Bill in the Punjab assembly the relationship between the doctors and their patients would be strengthened.

Cheema said now the responsibility of the doctors for their patients had increased but they would be able to attend to their patients without any mental pressure or fear of assault on them or ransacking of their hospitals by irresponsible people. He appealed to the doctors to serve the poor and needy patients by holding regular medical camps in the remote rural areas.

Cheema said, “ We should be thankful to the Chief Minister who fulfilled this long-pending demand of the doctors”.Dr Cheema was honoured by the IMA Patiala on the occasion, as he was the person instrumental in getting this Bill passed in the Punjab assembly.

Dr Cheema, while speaking to the media, said the doctors earlier had put up this demand to the Chief Minister in the previous government, but to no avail. Now he had fulfilled this demand after his commitment to the doctors. He said no medical college under the state government would be derecognised by the Medical Council of India as the state government was taking the necessary steps to fulfill the vacant posts of medical teachers. He accused the previous government of ignoring the health services and not filling the posts of medical teachers in the state medical colleges.

Prof Prem Singh Chandumajra, general secretary of the Shiromani Akali Dal, said the state government had fulfilled his commitment made to the doctors for passing
the Bill.

President of the IMA Patiala Dr DS Bhullar appreciated the efforts of Dr Cheema for getting this Bill passed by the government and said now the doctors would be able to serve their patients with more dedication.
