Medical college authorities in a spot
Patiala, September 13 The college authorities have been accused of giving admission to a medically unfit student and granting him attendance while he was away to the US. US resident Dr Rupinder Mann said she had married Gurpartap Singh Sidhu of Bathinda on December 30, 2001. At the time of marriage, Gurpartap’s family said he was studying in the final year at the college and was to soon become a doctor, she added. Gurpartap often went to the US after marriage. “I had come to attend my cousin’s wedding in India in November, 2005. Everything was normal till Gurpartap got a green card in the US. Once he got the card, his parents started demanding money from my family. My husband misbehaved with me and fled to the US. He then filed for divorce in the US, demanding equitable distribution of property to which he had not contributed a penny in all these years,” she alleged. “Gurpartap in his ongoing case in the US has stated under oath that he had glaucoma in one eye and had a long history of eye ailment. He had lost sight in the left eye and had history of spontaneous retinal detachment in the right eye. Even doctors in the US had certified that it was an old problem. However, this fact was hidden from me and my family before marriage,” she claimed. She said if Gurpartap had any such problem, he was ineligible to seek admission to any medical college, as he was medically unfit. Interestingly, when Gurpartap took admission, his uncle, Sukhdev Singh Sidhu, was the principal of the college. When Rupinder sought this information under the RTI Act, she found out that there was no medical record of Gurpartap at the college. Moreover, he was marked present in the class while he was away to the US, as revealed by his passport record. Rupinder has accused Sukhdev Singh Sidhu of giving fake admission to Gurpartap. However, Sukhdev said it was the college’s duty to keep the record. “I was the principal and had nothing to do with attendance. The respective teachers should be questioned,” he added. College principal Dr Jasvinder Pal Kaur Shergill also held the then teachers responsible for the anomaly in attendance. |
