1 killed at unmanned level crossing
Bassi Pathana, September 11 Surjit Singh Dhanoa, SHO, Bassi Pathana, reached the spot and called nearby villagers and started the rescue operation. According to information, five members of a family, belonging to Sher Majra village near Samana in Patiala district, were returning to their village after meeting their relative Narinder Kaur, sarpanch of Mairan this afternoon. As soon as their car No. PB-11AD-3727 reached near the C-13 unmanned level crossing at Mairan between Bassi Pathana and Nogawan railway stations at about 14.30 pm, it was hit by a passenger train running between Nangal and Ambala. The car was badly smashed. The people gathered in a large number and extricated the injured from the car and rushed them to civil hospital and the PGI. Balbir Singh Bajwa, husband of the village sarpanch, said their relative had come for the matrimonial alliance of their son settled in Canada. He said with in minutes of their departure, he got the news of the accident. He said villagers had been requesting the authorities since long to deploy a man on the railway crossing but to no use. He said today he got a call from the higher authorities of the Railways from Ambala after accident. He offered them to bear all expenses for installation of crossings. The dead was identified as Rajwinder Kaur, 42, wife of Darshan Singh. Those injured as Bhupinder Singh 35, Darshan Singh 45 and Narinder Kaur 35, wife of Bhupinder Singh, all residents of Sher Majra village in Patiala district. Till the filling of the report, the injured were struggling for life in the PGI. G.D.Sharma, station superintendent said the track was immediately cleared for rail traffic after the accident. GRP Sirhind has registered a case in this regard. |

‘Boogie Woogie’ star gets rousing reception
Patiala, September 11 A number of city residents greeted Esha at the Patiala railway station. Talking to The Tribune, Esha said she was overwhelmed. “I never expected such a grand reception. I never realised I made it that big until I reached here,” she said. “The win came as a surprise for me as the competition was very tough and I was not sure of winning the competition,” she added. A class IX student of the Lady Fatima School, Esha was all praise for the popular show being aired on Sony TV. On being asked how she rates the show, Esha said there was no comparison. “Boogie-Woogie has entered its 12th year which shows its credibility and popularity. This is the best platform one can get as it helps you to learn different dance forms and top of all, there is no partiality in the show,” she said. “The selection criterion is very transparent and encouraging. Patiala, Esha said it was only because of her that she managed to win the contest. “I started learning kathak at the age of three. My instructor gave me vital tips to be the best in this field. I was touched when she came over to Mumbai before my final competition to encourage me, she added. The most memorable moment, she said, was when all the judges gave a standing ovation to my instructor. “I could not have asked for more,” she said. Ahluwalia, too, is all praise for Esha. She said that Esha was her best student. “She is dedicated, hardworking and very punctual. That is the reason I went to Mumbai to encourage her because her parents said that she required my support and I had to be with my favourite student in her testing times,” she added. Later, Esha was honoured at a function in her school. The entire family and her schoolmates were delighted as she had brought laurels to the city. |

Orientation course for pregnant women
Kharar, September 11 The course was organised by senior medical officer Dr Jai Singh senior medical officer. Speaking on occasion, gynaecologist Dr Balwinder Kaur said, "Pregnant women should take healthy and nutritious diet. The lactating mothers should also be cautious about their diet." District programme officer Dr Sunita Pal advised complimentary feeding to infants after six month along with breastfeeding. “Complimentary food should include cereals and pulses in ratio of 5:1. Cooked green leafy vegetables and seasonal fruits should be given to infants after six month. Expensive food items can be replaced by cheap and nutritious food items by different methods like sprouting and roasting.
Children should be given traditional foods like khicheri, dalia and halwa instead other food

Patiala, September 11 Even as the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) has been handed over Monica Devi’s case, the Manipur Olympic Association has gone ahead and taken the decision to quit national championships. Manipur, a boxing-rich state, which has produced innumerable national-level pugilists including 1998 Bangkok Asian Games gold-medallist Dingko Singh, has already pulled out of the senior national boxing championship currently underway at Bathinda. Now, defending champions Manipur are unlikely to take part in the Junior National Weightlifting Championship, slated to be held at Noida (UP) from September 12 to 14. Manipur, which won women's team championship in the last edition, has already sent their entries but are yet to confirm their participation in the junior national weightlifting meet. Sources reveal that the weightlifters from the North-eastern state will be skipping the event. All the other 28 states and Indian Weightlifting Federation (IWF) units have confirmed participation in the tournament. The championship will also serve a platform for selection of lifters for training for the October 12-18 Commonwealth Youth Games to be held in Pune. |

university. Lauding the smoke-free plan of the chancellor of the university, Tarsem Lal Garg, Gupta asserted that persistent efforts should be made to make this campaign a great success. He said in India at least 1 million persons died every year due to oral cancer. He revealed that from October 2, the law of smoking would be made more stringent in the country. The education minister reminded that in 1996, the then Chief Minister, Bansi Lal, had enforced prohibition in the state but he could not get the desired success due to lack of determination. He gave away prizes to those students of MM University and MM International School who had secured the first, second and the third position in poster making competition. He also paid floral tributes to Maharishi Markenday. An oath was administered to the students to make the university smoke free. |

Haryana to set up women chaupals
Ambala, September 11 Addressing a gathering on the occasion of district-level panchayat mahila and yuva shakti campaign in Rukmani Devi hall, Ambala Cantt, here today, Kartar Devi, who is also the chairperson of the campaign, reminded that former prime minister Rajiv Gandhi had made efforts to empower women. She said that during his tenure, 73rd amendment was made in the Constitution under which 33 per cent reservation was given to the women in panchayati raj institutions. The minister exhorted women to be aware of their rights. She added that the Haryana government had launched a number of ambitious schemes for the welfare of the women, including Ladli, social security pension and 33 per cent reservation in houses being constructed by the Haryana Housing Board. Similarly, she said, the women had been given 33 per cent reservation in teachers’ recruitment and 2 per cent concession in stamp duty. Welcoming the chief guest, deputy commissioner Mohammed Shayin said that such campaigns would motivate the women to know their rights. Additional deputy commissioner Renu Phoolia said the government had decided to construct women chaupals in villages having over 50 per cent of Scheduled Castes’ population. In Ambala district, 72 such chaupals would be constructed and out of these, work on 15 chaulaps had already been initiated, he added. MC polls: 30 EVMs tested
Kharar, September 11 He said the EVMs had been kept under tight security at the polytechnic college in Khooni Majra. “Eight EVMs have been stored as backup. EVMs will facilitate early polling and it would take not more than 15 minutes to count the votes,” said Gupta. He said the polling would start at 8 a.m. and will continue till 4 p.m. followed by counting of votes at the polling booths. The results would be declared in the same day, he added. A total of 29,873 electors would cast their votes, including 15,474 males and 14,399 females. Each ward has 2,000 voters on an average. Meanwhile, around 3,000 people of Sante Marja and adjoining villages will not be able to elect their representatives as these villages were included within the municipal limits recently. |

5 hurt in family feud
Kharar, September 11 Trouble started when Shweta and Sulochna were sitting at Surinder's house and Sulochna's sister Veena Rani arrived there. Both the sisters were not at good terms and indulged in a verbal duel. Sulochna reportedly called her relatives from Mohali and Chandigarh and both the groups came to blows, resulting in injuries to Surinder Kaur, Veena Rani, Shweta, Hemant Kumar and Vikram Singh. HC helps couple reunite
Chandigarh, September 11 Zafira used to visit Ranvir’s village, Gumthala Rao in Yamuna Nagar, and earn a living by selling vegetables. Soon after the couple fell in love, they eloped to get married. Zafira even changed her name to Manisha after solemnising the wedding on July 26 in the Sivananda Divine Mission, Industrial Area in Chandigarh. Thereafter, two stayed at a relative’s place in Bilaspur in Ambala. However, the two were separated by the sarpanch of Gumthala Rao village and Leela Rao, Ranvir’s father. The Punjab and Haryana High Court on the statement of Ranvir that he wanted to live with his wife, the court asked him to standby his statement. Narrating her story Zafira said, “My parents were against this marriage. We stayed at Ranvir’s relatives place and stayed there for nine to 10 days. We stayed at the houses of two relatives. On August 13, both of us were going to meet the SP in Yamuna Nagar to seek protection, when the sarpanch and one Naseem took us. They assaulted us and threatened us of dire consequences. Both of them were separated. The boy was sent to his hometown and the girl’s parents took her away. Zafira stayed with her parents for a week. Subsequently, she met her husband’s sister and moved to Ropar where she started working as a domestic help.” Delighted to meet her husband after a month Zafira said, “I am so happy to see my husband safe. I will be a mother soon and we plan to stay somewhere in Punjab.” |

Man acquitted of raping wife
Chandigarh, September 11 Naveen’s family was delighted with the acquittal. He said, “The orders of being exonerated of the charges of raping his wife came as a major relief. “The allegations that were levelled against me disturbed my piece of mind. In fact, I had lost hope from life and was in depression. But everything will be fine now as my in-laws have accepted our marriage. I will come to the courts with my wife.” Destiny stood by Naveen’s side when he tried to commit suicide but he survived with some minor injuries, only to see another criminal case of attempted suicide being slapped on him. Though Naveen has been acquitted of the charges of rape he is still under custody as he had tried to commit suicide. The accused had fainted in the court complex on July 28 and was taken to hospital. According to the prosecution, Naveen had allegedly eloped with a resident of Maloya and had married her on November 13, 2007. However, on the complaint of the girl’s father that she was a minor, Naveen was arrested on December 16, 2007, from Meerut and booked on charges of abduction and rape. The sarpanch of
Maloya, Jagdeep Singh, who had helped the couple got married, was also arrested. However, after the arrest, the girl had got her statement recorded under Section 164 of the CrPC in a local court, stating that she had married him without any pressure. She had also expressed desire to be with him. The sarpanch was also present in the court and was also acquitted of all charges. After the accused tried to commit suicide, the girl’s father, who is also the complainant in the case, gave the statement in favour of the accused.

Taking up a petition claiming that the Chadha group managed to get liquor vends allotted in its favour for 2008-09 by filing multiple applications, the Bench of Chief Justice T.S. Thakur and Justice Surya Kant directed the beneficiaries to place on record their bank statements from March 3 to March 14. The case will now come up for hearing on September 25. The petitioners, through senior advocate Mohan Jain, had claimed that 20 to 30 applications per vend were forwarded without attaching the requisite demand draft equivalent to five per cent amount of licence fee. |

The challan has been filed based on an inquiry report submitted by a GMCH committee and the Central Forensic Science Laboratory (CFSL) report of the suicide note and a re-evaluation of examination paper. Chandigarh, September 11 Gaganjeet fired two eagles and six birdies as he broke the course record of 65 set by Chandigarh big-hitter Gurbaaz Mann in 2006. His 11 under 63 today helped him occupy the top spot at the midway stage. Rahul Ganapathy, who repeated a five-under par 67, trailed the leader by just one stroke at 10 under par 134. Feroze Ali Mollah carded his second consecutive 68 to be placed third at eight under par 136. Fiftysix professionals and four amateurs made the cut, which was fixed at six over par 150. Uttam Singh Mundy of Chandigarh shot a five under par 67 to be placed fifth at six under par 134. Harendra Gupta, also of Chandigarh, managed a par 72 to be tied 10th at two under 142. Gaganjeet started from the 10th and made four consecutive pars before sinking birdies on the 14th and 16th. The 20-year-old then made his first and last bogey on the 17th. This was followed by an eagle on the 18th, where Bhullar landed his second shot seven feet short of the pin. Bhullar got off to an excellent start on the return nine as he birdied the first and sank an eagle on the second. Three more birdies followed on the fourth, seventh and ninth. Bhullar, who is currently eighth on the PGTI Order of Merit, said: “I am really thrilled with my effort today. This was my best round as a professional. It was a mixture of good hitting and putting. I think I was also a little lucky with my putting today as all the putts were falling in. My best effort came on the 18th and the second. On both these par five holes, I hit the green in two strokes." He added, "I guess, playing a number of tournaments in succession has helped me get into my groove. I love playing several events on the trot because I keep getting better with each one and also get into my rhythm." Digvijay Singh (68, 69) is fourth at seven under 137. 2 snatchers held; mobiles, bikes recovered
Chandigarh, September 11 A total of three two-wheelers, including a Hero Honda a Splendor, a Kinetic Marvel and a Scooty, besides six mobiles were recovered from their possession. According to DSP (South) J S Khaira, the accused are habitual criminal and were involved in many cases of snatching and robbery, which took place recently. The duo snatched a mobile phone from a woman in Sector 41 on Scooty. The Scooty was stolen from Maloya Colony. They were also involved in robbery of a mobile phone from Sector 40 shop. The police laid a naka following a tip-off. During the checking of vehicles, the duo was nabbed with a stolen Splendor motor cycle, which they were riding with fake registration number. During the interrogation, the duo admitted to the crimes they have committed in the past. “We would produce them in court tomorrw”, said the police. Meanwhile, the police has registered five cases of snatching and robbery against them. Sonu is a resident of Maloya Colony while Ravi lives in Dadu Majra Colony. |

Stabbed
The police has registered a case on a complaint filed by Navneet Kumar and Harsh, residents of a Maloya colony, that Juggal Kishore, a resident of Sector 37, stabbed them in Sector 37 yesterday. The case has been registered, under sections 323, 324, 307 of Indian Penal Code. The police has arrested the accused.
Bid to take away bike
Rahul Kumar, a resident of Burail, has filed a complaint with the police that Amritpal Singh, a resident of Patiala, and two other unknown persons tried to take away his motorcycle from the light point of Sector 46/47 at 11:55 pm yesterday. The police has registered a case under Sections 356, 511 of the IPC in the police post, Sector 34. Amritpal Singh has been arrested, but two other are absconding. |

Vegetable vendor run over by truck
Mohali, September 11 He was pulling a rehri when the incident took place. The deceased has been identified as Nirmal. A police official said that the deceased, along with his fellow vegetable vendor Gurmeet, was going to Kharar when the incident occurred. However, Gurmeet and the son of the deceased escaped unhurt as they were riding another rehri. The driver of the truck fled from the scene. A case has been registered against the driver.

Scorned lover throws acid on girl
Chandigarh, September 11 Jyoti (16) of Hallomajra was admitted to the GMCH-32 with 30 per cent burns. The police has launched a hunt to trace Vishal who hails from Assam. The incident occurred around 12.30 pm when Jyoti was returning home from a stitching centre, when Vishal threw acid on her from behind. According to police sources, Vishal, who stays in her neighbourhood, was waiting for her near the temple of the area. “Their break-up is probably the reason behind the incident,” police sources said. The police recovered some letters Jyoti had written to Vishal during a search of his room. “It was planned as he took all things with him,” the Sector 31 SHO, Bhupinder Singh, said. Chandigarh, September 11 The office-bearers of the association have alleged that Dr Shivpreet owes more than Rs 90 lakh to them but was refusing to clear the same.
