IT was an incredible engineering marvel that wowed the world. Moving Ancient Egypt on Thursday at 9 pm on the National Geographic Channel is the story of the greatest transportation of all time — the relocation of Egypt’s finest ancient temples away from the rising waters of the Nile. The temples were built during the reign of Pharaoh Ramesses ll in the 13th century B.C. Their relocation was necessitated to avoid their being submerged during the creation of a massive artificial water reservoir on River Nile in the 1960s. British Royal Navy diver Ed Thompson recounts how he and his team rescued monuments flooded on the Island of Philae, by dismantling them and moving them to safer places. Of particular interest is the transportation of the 900-ton temple of Amada for 3 km on rail tracks across the Egyptian sands to drier ground. It is considered one of the greatest engineering feats of all times.

A classic revived

The Great Gatsby, a novel about doomed love and ambition set in the high society of the 1920s New York, is one of the most brilliant works of American author F. Scott Fitzgerald. It chronicles an era called the ‘jazz age’, which dawned after the First World War when the American society enjoyed unprecedented levels of prosperity. The most famous screen adaptation came in 1974 starring Robert Redford and Mia Farrow. Now the feature-length dramatisation of The Great Gatsby will be aired on Monday at 9 pm on the History Channel. It is a nostalgic trip to the swinging 1920s when romance and tragedy went hand in hand.
