Bid to take village land, five injured
Gurdeep Singh Mann
Tribune News Service

Banur, August 20
Five persons, including a sarpanch, were injured in a clash at Hulka village, 3 km away from here, this morning.

Villagers alleged that a large number of armed people from Ferozepur, Amritsar and other parts of the state reached the village to take possession of 83 marlas of land.

“The land belongs to the local gurdwara committee. It is given to villagers on a contract basis,” sarpanch Jaswant Singh said.

The villagers revealed that a section of people associated with a religious organisation tried to encroach on the land by showing the “possession” letter during a girdwari which was to be held today.

“They came in seven-eight vehicles, including an Indica with a red beacon. They started razing the crop on the land with the help of tractors,” Kulwinder Singh, another resident, said.

When the sarpanch tried to intervene, he was attacked with a sword. Villagers then gathered around the attackers and nabbed 10 persons, who were later arrested by the police.

The accused also fired some gunshots to create panic. Police officials reached the spot and assured residents that action would be taken. However, no case had been registered till evening.

The villagers alleged that the police was not taking action due to political pressure.

Rajpura DSP Bhupinder Singh said revenue department officials had summoned two groups that were staking a claim to the land. “The tehsildar did not reach the spot and a clash took place. Five persons received minor injuries. A case would be registered against both parties,” he said.

Rajindra hospital without cardiologist
Attar Singh
Tribune News Service

Patiala, August 20
The Government Rajindra Hospital, one of the biggest government hospitals in Malwa region, is lagging far behind as far as cardiac operations are concerned.

Sources revealed that patients from middle class and poor families preferred to visit the hospital since it was financially viable for them as far as operations of ears, nose and throat were concerned. However, when it came to the most delicate organ of the body, heart, people preferred to keep away from the hospital.

The main reason for people flocking to private hospitals and staying away from reputed government hospitals was that such hospitals did not have state-of-the-art equipment to deal with cardiac surgery cases.

A doctor, speaking on conditions of anonymity, revealed that if top cardiac surgeons were posted in government hospitals and such institutions were equipped with latest equipment, people obviously would start preferring government hospitals because they were considered to provide health care at cheaper costs as compared to private hospitals.

Sources within the hospital disclosed that the cardiac department of the hospital was without the services of any cardiac surgeon since long. In the cardiology department, doctors from the medicine department were checking heart patients and advising on medicines. The job is primarily done in other hospitals by doctors specialising in heart diseases.

Things have come to such a pass that the doctor heading the cardiology department, Dr Harbir Kaur, is also from the medicine department. Other doctors posted there are also from the medicine department.

No efforts are being made by state health department to post doctors specialising in heart disease in the cardiology department.

It has been many times that if any patient developed heart complications he was referred to the PGI at Chandigarh.

Surinder Singh, medical superintendent of the hospital said even if the hospital had good doctors specialising in heart diseases, still patients would not come to the hospital because of the lack of hi-tech infrastructure. He added that there was a shortage of good surgeons in the region and said it was duty of the health department to post good cardiologists in the hospital.

Delegations have also met union minister Kumari Selja in this regard during her several visits to Kalka, but got only empty assurances.

Raised in 1980, Tipra colony has over 2,400 houses, including 300 railway quarters of retired railway employees. With a population of over 15,000, the colony has 3,500 voters.
