Patriotism marks I-Day celebrations
Mohali, August 15 Punjab education and civil aviation minister Dr Upinderjit Kaur unfurled the National Flag and took the salute on the occasion. Addressing the people of the district, the chief guest paid homage to the great freedom fighters. An impressive parade comprising of contingents of Punjab traffic police, Punjab police, Punjab home guards, NCC school and college children took part in function. A cultural programme by 1,000 children from government and private schools of the district was organised as part of the function.
FATEHGARH SAHIB: Just when drizzling was to play spoilsport at the district-level function on Independence Day today and the gathering at Mata Gujri College started receding away, health minister Laxmi Kanta Chawla took over the show and danced with the giddha team. Chawla flagged off 10 mobile medical units equipped with latest gadgets launched under the National Rural Health Mission (NRHM) to meet any medical emergency. The Red Cross Society donated sewing machines to 15 widows, seven tricycles and three wheel chairs to physically challenged persons. Deputy commissioner Ashok Kumar Singla, SSP Kaustubh Sharma were also present. ZIRAKPUR: The 61st Independence Day was celebrated with great and gaiety enthusiasm at Zirakpur here. The programme was organised by Zirakpur municipal council, in which students of 11 schools participated. Zirakpur municipal council president Narinder Kumar Sharma was the chief guest. The others present included vice-president Kulwinder Sohi, executive officer R.K. Mittal and other municipal councillors. Narinder Sharma unfurled the Tricolour at the municipal council committee office. Around 100 school students presented a colourful cultural programme. DERA BASSI: Dera Bassi, the 61st Independence Day was celebrated with great enthusiasm at Government High School. Derbassi SDM Sohan Lal Bhumbak was the chief guest. A colourful cultural programme was organised in which schoolchildren participated. PATIALA: The Tricolour was unfurled by co-operation minister Capt Kanwaljit Singh during the Independence Day function held at YPS stadium here today. Speaking on the occasion, he extolled the virtues of the Punjabi community and said Punjabis were in the forefront of the country’s freedom struggle. Capt Singh said nobody would be allowed to destroy the social fabric of the country. He said the SAD had strengthened the democratic process in the state by successfully holding elections to the panchayti raj institutions. The minister honoured 21 prominent personalities of the region and also distributed sewing machines to poor and needy women. Meanwhile, a colourful programme was also organised at the head office of State Bank of Patiala. On the occasion, 23 orphanage children of SOS village near Rajpura were adopted by the bank. A cheque of Rs 1,38,000 was also presented to the SOS village. An impressive event was also organised at Government Chest and TB Hospital on the occasion of Independence Day. The Punjab State Electricity Board celebrated Independence Day at PSEB headquarters. H.S. Brar, member, distribution, unfurled the National Flag and inspected the guard of honour by the jawans of vigilance and security wing of the PSEB along with Hussan Lal, board secretary. MW, a subsidiary of Indian Railways, also celebrated Independence Day on its premises here today. The National Flag was unfurled by chief administrative officer Jayanta Ghosh who also took a salute from a contingent of the Railway Protection Force. AMBALA: Health minister Kartar Devi honoured family members of several freedom fighters and martyrs on the occasion of the 62nd Independence Day here today. As many as 19 officials of the district administration, players and meritorious students were also honoured. Wives of martyrs Chaman Lal, Dyal Singh, Sahib Singh, Mahinder Singh, Puran Singh, Gurbachan Singh, Ajmair Singh, Hari Singh, Gurcharan Singh, Mehar Singh, Jeet Ram, Kartar Chand, Arjun Singh, Naib Singh, Manjeet Singh, Kashmir Singh, Paramjeet Singh and Narinder Singh were presented with a shawl and a memento. Ambala range IG K.K. Sindhu, District and Session Judge B.M. Bedi, deputy commissioner Mohammad Shayin and Ambala SP Sibash Kabiraj were also present. Independence Day was also celebrated in various educational institutions. 95-year-old Congress leader Ram Lubhaya was honoured. BASSI PATHANA: Independence Day was celebrated with great enthusiasm at I.T.I grounds here today. Tehsildar Vipin Bhandari unfurled the National Flag and took the salute from the contingents of Punjab police, home guards and NCC cadets. He handed over sewing machines to widows and tricycles to physically challenged persons. Schoolchildren presented an impressive cultural programme. Trophies named after Kargil martyrs
Ropar, August 15 These trophies have been constituted in the memory of Capt Amol Kalia and Subedar Sampuran Singh who died in the Kargil war. These running trophies were conferred on Baba Labh Singh and Baba Jarnail Singh for their humanitarian help during the Naina Devi stampede and Karamjit Singh from Jeowal village who saved a child from drowning in Anandpur Sahib. Civil surgeon Dr Arjan Singh Gill and Jathedar Tarlochan Singh were also honoured for lending their services to victims of the Naina Devi stampede. Cabinet minister Bikramjit Singh Majithia gave ex-gratia grants to two women - Bachittar Kaur from Mughal Majri village and Rakesh Kumari from Ganguwal village - whose husbands were killed in the Naina Devi stampede. Kalia's parents and Sampuran's widow were honoured at the I-Day function. Tehsildar Nangal was given a Rs 30,000 cheque to be distributed to six people (Rs 5,000 each) from Nangal who got injured at Naina Devi. Addressing the gathering, Majithia said Punjab was proud of shooter Abhinav Bindra for bagging gold at the Beijing Olympics. He added that young generation should follow Bindra's footsteps but not forget the sacrifices of freedom fighters for India's struggle for independence. DC Baldeo Purushartha, SSP R.N. Dhokey and others were also present. A holiday has been declared in all schools of the district on Saturday. |

UT team enters semifinals
Chandigarh, August 15 Batting first, Pune made 79 for 8 in the allotted overs. The target was overhauled by the local outfit in 17.5 overs at the loss of five wickets. Abhinav Bindra’s trainer honoured
Chandigarh, August 15 He was honoured by a Bengali association, Bangiya Sanskritic Samahaline (BSS). President of the association, S.R. Two held for assaulting cop
Nayagaon, August 15 The incident took place last night when constable Rajvir Singh of the UT police had come to the Janta colony to collect rent. He was standing outside his property talking to a shopkeeper who collects the The constable was taken unawares and was beaten up. Dry day: 2 held for selling liquor
Panchkula, August 15 According to the police, Ramesh was selling liquor which he kept in a freezer in the verandha of a vend. SHO of police station Sector 5 Mukesh Kumar on a specific information, sent a decoy customer to him. As soon as he accepted the money and handed over the bottle taking it out from the freezer, the police overpowered him and arrested him after registering a case. Cops from the Sector 20 police station arrested Surinder Singh while he was selling liquor at a liquor vend in Sector 14. The Chandimandir police also seized 108 bottles from a resident of Kharak Mangoli near the Ghaggar bridge. The accused, identified as Vishnu, was going towards Nada village when the police stopped him at a naka and seized the contraband. |

2 dowry cases registered
Chandigarh, August 15 In her complaint she alleged that her husband, Baljinder Singh, and her in-laws, who reside at Saifalpur village, Ropar, used to harass and maltreat her besides forcing her to bring more dowry. In another dowry-related case registered at
the Sector-3 police station, Vinod He alleged that Yogesh and his parents used to harass and maltreat his daughter, Priyanka, for bringing more dowry. Both cases have been referred to the Women and Child Support Unit of the Chandigarh police. Arrested: The crime branch of the Chandigarh police has arrested Harish Kumar, a resident of Sector-25, for illegally possessing liquor. The accused was arrested from near the Sector-25 cremation ground yesterday. A case under Sections 61/1/14 of the Excise Act has been registered at Sector-11 police station. Stolen: A motorcycle (CH03 W 6867) was stolen from Sector 22-B today. The vehicle was parked in front of House No. 1569.
