ASI held for graft
Patiala, July 29 A case has been registered against him under Sections 7, 13 (2), 88 of the IPC and various sections of the Prevention of Corruption Act at the Patiala Vigilance Bureau. The VB team, led by DSP Anil Kumar Sharma, nabbed ASI Hans Raj from Mullepur village in Fatehgarh Sahib district. Hans Raj was nabbed following a complaint filed by Kulbir Singh, a resident of Kheri Bhai Ke in Fatehgarh Sahib. Kulbir Singh had alleged that in a particular case, the ASI had arrested one Raghubir Singh while he wanted to keep the other accused Gurmeet Kaur out of the case. The FIR had named both Gurmeet Kaur and Raghubir Singh. The VB, acting on a complaint made by Kulbir Singh, laid a trap and nabbed Hans Raj. DSP Sharma said the ASI had already received Rs 11,000 out of Rs 20,000 that he had demanded. The sleuths nabbed Hans Raj when he was trying to accept Rs 4,000 today. The money was later recovered from his possession by the VB team. Shadow witness in the case was Kuldip Singh while the bribe amount was accepted by the ASI in the presence of assistant executive engineer Bhupinder Singh and junior assistant Rattan Singh, both employees of the Bhakra Mainline Department. |

Ex-sarpanch, family booked
Kharar, July 29 On Saturday, Bhag Singh's grand daughter Renu was standing in a queue to fetch water from a public tap. Kulwinder Singh's son Mandeep Singh tried to get ahead of Renu in the queue. People, including Bhag Singh's wife, objected to this. Mandeep Singh allegedly abused Labh Kaur. Bhag Singh reached the spot and had a verbal duel with Mandeep. Later, Mandeep and his father along with others reached Bhag Singh's house and attacked the members of the family. On Bhag Singh's statement, the police booked a case against Kulwinder Singh and his relatives, Saudagar Singh, Darshan Singh, Banga Singh, Maru Singh, Bhinder Kaur, Sero Kaur, Mitti Kaur, Nammo, Mandeep Singh, Nagar Singh and Dalvinder Singh. |

Residents observe bandh
Bassi Pathana, July 29 A curfew-like situation prevailed in the town as all shops, dhabas etc. remained closed. A large number of people gathered in Dusehra ground and organised a protest rally and blocked the traffic on the Chandigarh-Bassi road. Commuters had to face difficulty as the police diverted the traffic through link roads. The dharna continued till 2 pm and after the assurance from Pritpal Singh Virk, SP, Rajwinder Singh Sohal, DSP, and Poonamjit Kaur, SDM, to arrest the culprit the blockade was lifted. |

An African student today gave a complaint to SP Sandeep Khirwar alleging that the director of Massif International College, Sector 20, had duped him on the pretext of offering him a course. Samuel, a 20-year-old citizen of Ivory Coast, Africa, alleged that he came from Africa to Panchkula to attend a business information system course at Massif International College in SCO 392, Sector 20. He was shocked to notice that he was the only student attending the course. He further alleged that after depositing amount of Rs 64,500 with the college through Western Union, he came to know that accreditation to the college for the course had been withdrawn. "My period of study was reduced to two months, instead of the prescribed six. |

Assault on lensman: Car recovered
Mohali, July 29 The car (PB11 AF 6103) belonged to the promoter of a prominent colony in Kharar. The promoter admitted that the car belonged to him but was being used by his liaison officer. The police raided the liaison officer’s residence in Phase VII here but no one other than a servant was there. When the police went to the promoter’s office, it was handed over the car keys and told that the car was parked in a park in Phase IX. The car was recovered from the park. |

Cop booked for ‘loitering’
Mohali, July 29 The accused Nirmal Singh is posted at Punjab police headquarters, Chandigarh, and lives in Phase 11 here. More than 30 residents of Phase 11, including a large number of women, complained to the police that the constable indulged in exhibitionism. They alleged that he removed his clothes whenever a woman walked past him. They added that he abused the residents and used filthy language even while talking normally. In their complaint to the police, they alleged that Nirmal Singh’s wife is also working in the Punjab DGP’s office as a superintendent and many women of the area had told her about Nirmal Singh’s habits. But despite many complaints reaching her, she could not stop him from such behaviour. The cop has been booked under sections 107 and 151 of the IPC and was remanded to judicial custody. |

City doctors in race for top AIIMS post?
Chandigarh, July 29 Two doctors from the PGI, Prof K.K. Talwar, director of the institute, and Prof Kartar Singh, head of gastroentrology department, are said to be strong contenders of this post. Besides the two, the names of Prof A.K. Mahapatra, director at the Sanjay Gandhi Postgraduate Institute of Medical Sciences and Research (SGPGI), Lucknow, and Prof T.D. Dogra, acting director of the All-India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS), are also doing the rounds. Though there was no official confirmation, sources in the health and family welfare ministry confirmed that they all were in the running for the coveted post. According to sources, both Dr Talwar and Dr Kartar Singh are considered to be strong contenders for the post even though they belong to different disciplines. Dr Talwar has been the head of the cardiology department at AIIMS and is on deputation as PGI director. When contacted, Dr Talwar, who is in Delhi, said: ''I cannot say anything and it is for the ministry to take a final decision.'' Dr Kartar Singh, who is member of the governing body and academic and selection committee at AIIMS, is also a strong contender as he has already served as the director of Sanjay Gandhi Postgraduate Institute of Medical Sciences and Research, Lucknow. When contacted Dr Singh, he said: “I am also waiting for the committee’s decision.” “There is a similarity between Dr Talwar and Dr Venugopal as they are from the same department. Perhaps, he stands a fair chance of becoming AIIMS director,'' said a faculty member at AIIMS. |
