Govt school closed for want of teacher

Buddanpur (Banur), July 26
Government Elementary School, Buddanpur, has been declared closed by the local education department officials on account of staff shortage.

The case of the school has been sent to higher officials wherein a demand for a permanent teacher has been sought besides other basic facilities, said officials.

Students in the elementary school at Buddanpur village, around 10 km from Banur, have been returning home every day due to the absence of a teacher. Around 70 students are enrolled with the school.

The condition of the nearby government school in Chhajon is no different as the number of students has been on the decline. The number of teachers and infrastructure are also not adequate there.

Officials of the education board said these schools fell under the zila parishad and due to the recent elections to panchayat samitis and zila parishad, teachers failed to attend classes. Now with the transfer of the only teacher, who was on deputation, the Buddanpur school has been closed.

Students are often found playing without a teacher in the school. Sarpanch Mahinder Kaur said a temporary teacher had been taking classes at school before.

Villagers said in spite of repeated assurances by the government on providing adequate facilities to provide education to rural children, nothing had been done in this connection.

Demanding appointment of teachers, a section of parents of students from both villages rued that the government teachers were not teaching the students properly and after the polls had completely stopped coming to their respective schools.

“The government should do something to save studies of these children,” said Tarsem Singh, father of a student.

District development panchayat officer Roop Singh admitted that the school had been declared closed due to staff shortage.

“Earlier we had the power to send a teacher on deputation on our own but now the government has put a ban on such decisions. We have sent the case of this school to higher authorities and a teacher will be appointed soon,” he said.

Now, Patiala residents cry for water
Attar Singh
Tribune News Service

Patiala, July 26
It’s double whammy for residents of this once royal township. First, power cuts ensured that residents get sleepless nights and now drinking water scarcity has hit them hard.

Residents, particularly those living within the precincts of the walled town, are sore over the failure of the municipal corporation authorities to provide them with adequate water.

So acute is the shortage that residents of ward No. 26, the ward of mayor, have said that in spite of numerous petitions to the MC little has been done to overcome the crises.

Gurvinder Singh of Model Town complains: “Earlier, the squabble between the mayor and the commissioner had ensured that all development works in the town came to a standstill. However, now that the commissioner has been removed, the mayor should concentrate on providing adequate drinking water to residents.”

Similar views are echoed by residents of other localities of the town as well. Joginder Singh of Khalsa Mohalla feels: “We have to get up at 7 am to stand in a queue to get water and after standing in the queue for one hour, all we get is two buckets of water, which is insufficient to meet our daily requirements.”

A councillor on condition of anonymity said: “We cannot do much about the scarcity issue. The situation in various wards is acute. Most of the tubewells are out of order, while technical snags have hit others leading to the scarcity.”

Balkar Singh, a resident of Rattan Nagar, says: “The corporation had approved the setting up of some tubewells to tide over the problem. In spite of tall claims made by the mayor, the corporation has done nothing to make the tubewells operational.”

Residents of Urban Estate have also been hit hard. Rues Avtar Kaur of the area: “I have two schoolgoing kids. I need water in the morning but due to paucity of water they are forced to go to school without bath. Whatever water that we get in the evening is at a very low pressure.”

Council Chief’s Poll
Residents against deferment again
Surinder Bhardwaj

Bassi Pathana, July 26
Residents and heads of various social and religious organisations have urged the leaders of the warring SAD factions not to vitiate the political and social atmosphere of the town for their petty political interests by repeatedly postponing the council president's election.

In a press release issued here today, they requested the leaders of both groups to allow the councillors to elect their president on their own and let the will of majority councillors prevail. Besides, they requested the district administration not to become a puppet in the hands of politicians and to do their duty without any political pressure.

They condemned the repeated deferment of council president's elections on frivolous grounds. The residents have even warned that if the convener tried to postpone the council president's election, which is to be held on Monday, for the third time, they would gherao him and sit on an indefinite dharna in front of CM’s residence.

Manoj Banda, general secretary of a Hindu organisation, said Bassi Pathana was a small town and the council didn’t have any source of income, but the election to the post of council president had become a prestige issue for the warring factions of SAD.

He said by indulging such acts, the leaders were losing their own morality and bringing a bad name to the government besides spoiling the atmosphere of the town.

They appealed to Chief Minister Parkash Singh Badal to direct their party leaders not to sow the seeds of hatred in the town.
