Eating out can cost you your health
Chandigarh, July 25 “I had taken my two-year-old son, who had eaten a sizeable portion
of the biryani. I felt disgusted and complained to the manager. Though he apologised and offered not to charge me, I paid the bill and without creating any scene, walked out,”
he said. This is not a stray incident. Considering the poor sanitary and unhygienic condition in most kitchens of eateries in the city, the presence of insects is quite common. With the district health authorities failing to carry checks on these eateries on a regular basis on account of a staff crunch, most eateries have failed to maintain hygiene standards. No wonder, doctors in the city say that cases of cystisergosis, an infection caused by eating unclean salad (infested with tapeworm) is also on the rise. “In most cases, people have generally consumed salad in a hotel or at weddings, which leads to this infection,” Dr Jitender, a doctor posted in Sector 19 dispensary. A visit to the service lane in Sector 35, which houses various eating joints, reveals the poor sanitation being followed by hotels. A number of hotels have set up their stoves outside the kitchen and gravies and dals are cooked here, unmindful of the dust and dirty water and cement particles suspended in the air, because of construction work in progress. Vegetables are stacked outside and the sacks of floor are placed on wet floors of the service areas in the kitchens. A sneak peak in the kitchens of two hotels by a Chandigarh Tribune team today showed that the floors were wet and rodents and insects moving around. In one of the restaurants in Sector 35, famous for its dishes and ambience, vegetables were littered on the floor. The chefs were standing and drops of their sweat were falling on the raw vegetables that were being picked up from the floor. These vegetables were cut and put in a cooking vessel without being washed. However, in spite of all this, all these eating joints do a brisk business and the flow of customers is always on the increase. With the health authorities allegedly turning a blind eye to the filth in and around these joints, no one other than the
one who becomes the unsuspecting victim is complaining. |

Govt takes steps to make banking easy
Chandigarh, July 25 This was disclosed by the deputy secretary, ministry of finance, Dr Tarsem Chand, in an exclusive interview with The Tribune here today. Talking to TNS after inaugurating two branches of Dena Bank at Panchkula and Mohali, he said this would be a revolutionary step in bringing about financial inclusion, especially for the mobile (migrant population) and students. “The government has initiated several steps to bring about financial inclusion. With the KYC norms, which among other things require a person to give a proof of residence, a lot of people were not able to become part of the banking net. Now, the RBI has suggested that the government announce the self-certification of documents be allowed for opening a bank account, thus bringing more customers in the banking fold,” he said. As per the guidelines on KYC, banks are required to carry out due diligence of customers before opening any deposit account. This was a step taken to combat money laundering and financing of terrorism in the country. In August 2002, the RBI advised banks to complete an appropriate KYC procedure for establishing identity by means of suitable documents. Though banks were asked to ensure that adoption of such a procedure does not lead to denial of access to banking services for the general public, some of these norms like furnishing a proof of residence (electricity bill, telephone bill or passport) and PAN number have been desisting a number of customers for financial inclusion. He also said the government was making efforts to promote business correspondents so that the banking services were available to all. “We are also promoting technology-aided banking in the form of biometric cards so that banking can be provided to the migrant population and rural population at their doorsteps,” he added. |

Dabba wallas roll in money
Chandigarh, July 25 The clients largely include people with a corporate profile and youth living as paying guests. “Major chunk of the business comes from the corporate sector. We cater to BPOs, banks and private companies. The PG clients follow next,” says a tiffin business regulator in Sector 18, who caters to over 230 clients. The city has seen a tremendous rise in the tiffin business in the past few years. With the work culture changing and a lot of students choosing the city for higher studies and coaching, Chandigarh is attracting crowds from all over the country. “With a monthly investment of Rs 1-1.5 lakh per month, we are able to generate 20 to 30 per cent profits. The turnover boils down to something near Rs 15 to Rs 20 lakh,” another caterer said. With the growing number of players in the business, the menus are getting fancier and more diversified. Every one is trying to offer clients hygienic food and a reasonable deal. “The prices vary from client to client. For corporate clients, we charge about Rs 40 to Rs 50 a meal while it is not feasible for students, so for them, the tiffin rates are Rs 20 to Rs 25 a meal,” says another tiffin manager. “You can’t survive on fast food all your life. It makes sense with the tiffin budget coming to Rs 1,500 per month for everything - from the morning paranthas to dessert at night,” said Bharati, who stays in a PG accommodation. Those in the industry feel that the tiffin business has more potential and a number of small caterers coming up in the tricity are diversifying the field. “There will be nearly 20 to 25 major tiffin walas in the tricity with a client profile of nearly 200 to 300. Rest are small caterers which limit themselves to specific sectors and cater to 30 to 50 clients,” a leading tiffin manager from Mohali said. |
