Electric bullets to replace tear gas shells
Gurdeep Singh Mann
Tribune News Service

Fatehgarh Sahib, July 5
The wireless electric bullets are all set to replace tear gas shells used to control unruly mob that often resorts to stone pelting. The Punjab police is going to procure these bullets from a Canada-based company.

It has asked for this ammunition to carry out in-depth performance trials with Punjab’s existing equipment and infrastructure. With increasing incidents of irate mob attacking public officials or cops, these bullets are being hoped to be of great importance.

“Many a times, when police officials throw tear gas shells on the restless mob, some of the unscrupulous ones throw it back. This makes the situation very odd and difficult to tackle,” said AIG armaments, Rakesh Chandra.

The bullet can hit up to a distance of 50 m (160 feet) and leaves its target shocked for at least 10 seconds. “It would be very useful to control those people who carry arms. But requires lot of practice and experience to identify the real mischief monger from the crowd,” he added.

While the Punjab police is already equipped with laser guns and electric device with wires to give minor current, the same have not proved useful in volatile situations of intense mob violence. “The existing guns are unable to shoot at from long distances. Moreover, it is a bit difficult to control the current producing device with wires,” said SSP, Fatehgarh Sahib, Kaustubh Sharma.

Following the issuance of new guidelines by the state transport department, work in the DTO has increased manifold.

At present, the total employee strength at the Patiala DTO is just twenty, including a district transport officer, an assistant district transport officer, and a section officer.

Earlier, there were two ADTOs, out of which, one retired a few years ago. However, this post is yet to be filled, putting general public to inconvenience. Although the DTO records are computerised, the staff has still to maintain a majority of the records manually.

The DTO has now been asked to fulfil the obligation of challans due to which the staff is overworked.

A source in the DTO today revealed that the staff should be increased by atleast 20 more employees to help in public dealing. He added that work pertaining to the challans should be handled by atleast five people instead of three.

Most of the employees remain busy in the work pertaining to the auction of fancy numbers while others have to take driving tests of people who have applied for driving licences. Other employees have to see work relating to routine checking and the issuance of road-worthiness certificates to vehicles.

Karachi a dream for Rabbi
Aarti Kapur
Tribune News service

Chandigarh, July 5
Karachi Valie song, which was dedicated to the girls of Karachi by Rabbi Shergill, a renowned singer, could not put that essence in the song as the Karachi authorities rejected his visa to shoot the song in their country. Rabbi Shergill informed this on launching of his new album ‘Avengi ja nahin’ at PVR cinema, Centra Mall, here, today.

“Through picturisation of this song in Karachi, I wanted to give traditional local touch as I had put my feeling in the composition,” he said. The composition of a song is not just a pack of rhythms, poetry and singer as picturisation of the locale also enhances its impact, Rabbi said.

It is a mystery for Rabbi that why his request of shooting this song in Karachi had been rejected by the authorities. After the long wait of more than two months, he was disappointed on refusal of the visa. “I believe that officials are extra conscious of the security of their country,” Rabbi said. Commenting harshly on reality shows, Rabbi said these shows were exploiting art and artists. “For me, singer is not a person who can just sing well, but he is a package of composition, melody and singing.” The reality shows had set restricted criteria for singer to sing well and not concerted its composition and music.

“I do not match with demands of Bollywood industry. That’s why I am quite away from the industry,” Rabbi added.

When asked how he was feeling to be awarded by Sikh council, he remarked that he is proud to elate on receiving the prestigious award.
