Mad about monsoon
Manpriya Khurana

PICTURE this. You are stuck in a bad traffic jam and the air-conditioner is not really helping to keep you calm and cool. The non-stop honking around is just adding on to the heat. Just then, you hear pitter-patter! And there you go smiling. The faint sound is sure music to ears, eyes, body, mind and soul. Monsoon is a blessing and if it comes a little early than expected, then nothing like that! Love, bliss, ecstasy it’s hard to describe the emotions that monsoon bring alive. This is one time when the whole world around you gets a makeover. To enjoy the best of this season, welcome it fully prepared. We’ll help you get started.

Go kaleidoscopic

THIS is one season that definitely needs a separate wardrobe. First things first, no whites please! You don’t want to be peek-a-boo to one and all around you. Since it’s the season of fun, excitement and joy, sport every imaginable hue and colour. Think indigo blue, electric green, chirpy orange, sunshine yellow and hot pink! That’s not it. Monsoon is the perfect time to sport capris too. And yes, bid goodbye to jeans and thick fabrics for the time being. Choose from voil, mal-mal, chiffons and georgettes, they dry quicker, but not the pure variety (because of their tendency to crinkle). Says Shelly of Shelly’s-8, "One can go in for capris and mid-length or A-line skirts." She adds, "Cotton fabrics with floral prints and polka dots look great." So go ahead and give that rainbow a huge complex.

Get it right

CO-ORDINATION is the key. Avoid heavy jewellery, bling-bling junk and even those eye-blinding pieces, for they all get spoiled due to moisture. Monsoons have a specific accessories dictionary. Scarves to cover your head and headbands to deal with frizzy hair. Carry the dump-all oversized bags to fit in the umbrella and the paraphernalia. They look good and are convenient too. Esprit and Adidas have a good collection of bags in waterproof materials like canvas. Also check out duffle bags available in all the major brands.

Tackle the tresses

EVEN a skinhead knows how difficult and unmanageable straight hair get during the rains. Experiment with soft curls, they look great and lend that natural wet-look. Tackle frizzy unruly locks by keeping hair serums handy. Serums also define tight curls. Says Innoxa-8 owner Neelu Grewal, "During monsoons, hair generally goes back to its natural texture. It’s best to follow and not fight." What about getting a blow dry? "It doesn’t help. Use smoothening serums for straight hair and as for the curls, let them be."

Beautiful you

YOU don’t want to look like some scary witch (unless you are looking for a chance to work with the Ramsays) with the mascara and the eyeliner going in all directions, courtesy sweat and moisture. Heavy make-up is a complete no-no. Go for gel-based and water-based translucent products, these let you breathe and are ideal for the season. A common problem during monsoons is acne and pimples. Says Neelu, "The lip colour should be light and soft. You can turn to good ol’ lacto calamine, for absorbing moisture."

Best foot forward

YOU don’t want to tumble as you make paper boats or simply take a walk by the lake. Right? So your best bet would be go in for shoes with a good grip. These will let you walk on the slippery ground. Well, pull out your sneakers and sports shoes. And if your idea of enjoying the monsoon is to get drenched, then go in for flat open chappals. Flip-flops in the brightest of colours not only look great, but also let your feet breathe and dry up quickly. Quite multipurpose. Right? You can go in for small heels too, since they won’t let your feet come in contact with the ground. Avoid leather bags, belts and shoes, because of its non-waterproof nature and the musty smell of wet leather.

It doesn’t take hours of study sessions to prepare for the monsoons, just a little bit of care! So go ahead dress up right and show all how great you can look in god’s own season.

THE mention of Hyderabad conjures up a royal and a rich image. And one of many things its famous for are the rich delicacies spied up with perfection by the master chefs. This time get a taste of Hyderabadi cuisines at Western Court-43 at the Hyderabadi Dum Pukht and Kebab Festival that took off on Friday.

Savour the delicacies amidst beautifully done up interiors designed by Neha Bakshi with traditional installations and fresh whiff of marigold and jasmine flowers scattered around. The food is authentic, as the chef has had them cooked in the style of the Nizam’s khansamas, which is cooking ithmenaan (patiently)."

Coming on to the menu, right from the main course that includes Murg nizam shahi, Murg malai korma, Mahi gosht to the vegetarian Paneer nizam shahi, Achaar ke alu, to the very Hyderabadi biryani, both veg and non-veg dishes are steeped in tradition. Little Interview
Living life to the hilt
Jasmine Singh

Easygoing, cheerful and living life by the moment, Achint Kaur is one television actor who is not in a hurry. She takes each day as it comes, which holds true for her roles in various serials. We get talking to the tall and versatile actor who shot to fame with Hindi serial Saaya and her roles in movies like Corporate, Om Jai Jagdish and Sur. She is back in a cameo on NDTV Imagine’s Raajkumar Aaryyan. Achint plays a witch who performs witchcraft on ten children.

Now what’s this thing with scaring and scheming?

I have done a good number of serials and most of the situations that you see on-screen have a bearing to real things happening around us. If not with myself, I have seen people going through such incidents. Not everything shown on television is fluff.

Fear of getting stereotyped?

True, but I make a conscious effort to switch over to a different and refreshing phase. I am happy doing so many things and this brings innovation to my work. Besides, I guess, it depends on your ability to slip from one mode to the other.

Any particular role you would want to do?

Nothing really. I am happy with what I am doing. Dissatisfaction in work keeps you going. I would like to experiment with my work.

Do we see you in any of the reality shows?

I did Fear Factor, which was an exciting experience.

Tell us something about your role in Raajkumar Aaryyan?

I play a witch in the serial. Right from the wardrobe to make up and hairdo, everything was taken care of. I quite liked my character as a chudail. I loved to watch myself in the mirror.

Movies, if any?

No, right now I am concentrating only on television.

Telly Tales
Show me the money
Purva Grover

If you thought singing & dancing was the only way to make money, you are in for a surprise

WE love the sound of rustling notes and we love being famous and recognised, and if both of these come to us absolutely free, we love it all the more! Don’t we? Yes, meet the new Indian audience for whom moolah and fame is all that matters, and they are willing to do anything for it. And by anything, we literally mean anything! Don’t believe us? Well, tune in as we flip channels and catch a glimpse of the antics of the greedy audience.

Our first one is for all the mommies worried over finding a partner for their darling daughters. Well, MTV has a solution that promises both a son-in-law and a bank balance. This one is called Splitsvilla, wherein 20 ‘hot’ girls compete for the attention of two ‘sexy’ guys, prize money and a chance to become MTV’s first couple VJ. Now mummyjis, all your darling has to do is forget all about values, erase the word shame from her dictionary and work on her make-up skills. So don’t blame her if you catch her openly flirting (in the pool, it gives extra points), abusing, back lashing or merely confessing that she is a loser.

Dus Ka Dam
Dus Ka Dam

Another show on the same channel is the recently concluded Roadies 5.0. All it required to stay in the competition was a mix of stripping, abusing, flirting, shouting, scheming and even thinking of self respect, could eliminate you. Now the participants did take part in adventure activities, but that was just by the way. So, if you saw guys go bald or strip on air or gals play blame games, remember the one-liner — pyaar, oops, paise ke liye saala kuch bhi karega! Here’s hoping they knew what they were doing.

Another show where we doubt if the participants know what they are doing is Channel V’s Get Gorgeous. Their aim is to transform simple girls into models and they mean business — Read: Polite insult. So dare you not know how to walk on the ramp, tie your hair right, or team up the perfect bag with the outfit. And for all you teenagers, your chance to make money is the show MTV’s Teen Diva.

Now ragging might me banned at colleges, but telly doesn’t mind caching on it. On Bindass, you can catch four students being bullied by the dadas of the college on the show Dadagiri. They have no qualms in calling it telly’s meanest show wherein you compete for prize money of Rs 50,000.

Okie, enough blaming the youth, what about the elder lot? A couple of days we saw an educated man fumble as he sang the national anthem on Star’s Kya Aap Paanchvi Paas`85 So what if you publicly admit that you don’t know if Australia is a country, continent or a state, as long as it is giving you a chance to meet SRK and earn bucks. Right? Or for that matter how about guessing what percentage of your country’s populace gets embarrassed in passing wind in front of the strangers? Yes, ‘mind-boggling’ questions like these on Sony’s Dus Ka Dam can actually help you get rich. And how can you forget the people who struggled to lose extra kilos on Biggest Loser Kaun? Now, the unhealthy bunch needed a Suneil Shetty to teach them about fitness and an audience to watch them sweat and pant.

Well, so all we can say is, all you poor beings take your pick from wooing, re-learning math tables, getting dressed up, memorising abuses`85and get rich and famous.

Says chef Ramit Kohli: "We’ve used several varieties of mangoes like Badami and Kesari flown in from Mumbai since you don’t get them here to prepare the dishes."

This is not all. Mangoes find a place in the Italian and Chinese menu as well. Then there’s a range of mango cocktails and yes, you have them share a space on the Indian restaurant Dera’s menu. Indeed a paradise for any mango lover.

If there’s Baked Mango Cheesecake, a sinfully delicious combo of mango and cheese baked to perfection (which melts in your mouth as you blink), then there’s also Fresh Mango Tart, think mangoes and fresh cream topped on crisp Tart Shells. Chef Ramit says, "The response to the festival has been great. We’ve received lot of interest and queries." So get started with starters like Mango Nectar, a refreshing mango drink, Mango Sampler, a selection of half a dozen varieties of handpicked mangoes.

Dental Disaster

Anne Hathaway’s recent visit to France has left a mark on her memory for all the wrong reasons. The Devil Wears Prada star was in Paris for the launch of Lancome’s new fragrance but her addiction to chewing gum left her with a broken tooth just a day before the event. "I broke a molar in Paris the day before the launch. I thought maybe I would be okay and went out to dinner and realised the nerve was exposed, so I had to go to a dentist," The Daily Telegraph quoted Hathaway, as telling Showbizspy.com.

However, the worst part, the 25-year-old has revealed, was her meeting with the French dentist. "I’m in France and I don’t speak French and it was a big disaster. I brought my tooth, in case that was helpful. I realised eventually (the dentist) wanted to reattach my tooth. And I’m like, "Is that a French thing?" — ANI

Spice up
Ban the tan

Shahnaz Husain

TANNING is inevitable. Sunscreens do help protect the skin from tanning and UV rays but if you have been careless, these simple scrubs will help reverse the effects of tan. A facial scrub is useful after washing or cleansing the skin. You can buy a facial scrub according to skin type. You can also make one at home with ingredients from the kitchen.

Ground almonds make a good facial scrub. It’s fairly simple. Just soak the almonds in hot water till the skin comes out easily. Then allow them to become totally dry. Grind into a powder and store in an airtight jar. Every morning, add a little cold milk to two teaspoons of the powder and rub the mixture gently on the skin. Wash off with water. If you have oily skin, mix rice powder with curd, apply, wash, every day. However, do not apply on pimples, acne or rash. For normal to dry skin, use it twice a week.

To lighten skin colour, add a pinch of turmeric (haldi) to curd and apply daily. Wash off after 20-30 minutes. This helps to counteract the effects of sun-exposure. You could also mix a teaspoon of honey with two of lemon juice and apply daily on the face. Wash it off with plain water after 20 minutes. This helps lighten skin colour. Tomato juice or pulp also helps to lighten skin colour, but is more suited for oily skin.

Another remedy to prevent sun-damage and protect the skin uses sesame seeds (til). Take a handful of sesame seed, crush and add half a cup of water. Let it stand for two hours. Strain the liquid and use it to wash your face. Sesame seed is said to have sun-protection properties and has been used since ancient times.

Exfoliate, exfoliate...

  • Mix 3 tablespoons ground almonds with half a cup of yogurt. Apply on face and neck. Rub gently, wash off.

  • Mix together a big pinch of salt in any cold cream or even plain white petroleum jelly and apply on face. Scrub smoothly with palms for about three minutes, to exfoliate skin, and remove dead cells. Wash off with mild soap, and warm water, to leave a fresh, clean, tingling skin.

Mask it right

  • Mix 2 teaspoons oatmeal with half-cup ripe papaya and one teaspoon honey. Apply and wash off after 20 minutes.

  • Mix 1 teaspoon honey with two teaspoons lemon juice, apply, wash off after 20 minutes. Use daily.

  • Add a pinch of haldi to yogurt and apply on face, neck and arms. Keep for 30 minutes. Use daily.

  • Mix half cup dried lemon peel with cold milk or yogurt and apply on face. Keep for 20 minutes. Use daily.

  • Mix lemon juice and cucumber juice in equal quantities, apply, keep for 20 minutes. Apply daily. Perfect for oily skin.

  • Mix tomato pulp with one teaspoon honey and apply daily for 20 mins.

Cleansing, skin lightening mask: Mix cucumber and papaya pulp with one teaspoon each of curd, honey, lemon juice and 3 teaspoon oatmeal.

Beautiful hands

  • Mix 2 tablespoon sunflower oil and 3 tablespoon coarse sugar to make a paste. Rub on hands and rinse off after 15 minutes.

  • Mix besan and curd and add a pinch of haldi. Apply on the arms daily 30 minutes before bath.

Health Tip

Lower back pain is the most commonly found problem among people. It occurs due to lifting heavy load or sudden twisting movement of the lower back while reaching out for an object. Some of the other causes could be repetitive movements while pursuing activities like gardening, sleeping on a soft or sagging bed. Symptoms include pain on forward bending, climbing stairs, coughing or sneezing, getting up from a chair etc.

Treatment: Lumbar support alleviates pain in acute cases. A massage helps in relaxing muscles and reducing pain. Placing a pillow between the knees while lying on the side also helps in decreasing tension in the muscles.

Prevention: Avoid bending forward with side movement. The correct method would be to face the object that is to be picked up. Always remember to bend your knees while lifting objects from the floor, keeping the back straight.
