Cops thrash women, child
Patiala, June 20 Gurmail Kaur (40), Harpreet Kaur (30) and Kawalpreet Kaur (10) were allegedly manhandled this morning by ASI Baljinder Kumar, Ranjit Singh, female constable Rajbir Kaur and two other cops. Gurmail Kaur said the cops forcefully entered her house in the absence of her husband and hit her. They tore her clothes and even pushed her against the wall. Her relative Harpreet Kaur who had come to her house with her daughter were also beaten up and made them vacate the house forcefully, she said. The cops threw all her belongings outside her house and broke open her box. They even took out Rs 20, 000 that were kept in the box, Gurmail added. A dispute over a house is said to be the reason behind the incident. Gurmail said her husband Bhajan Singh had bought the house 10 years ago. He was short of money so he requested Rajbir Kaur, constable at Tripuri police station, for financial help. She agreed to give him Rs 2 lakh. Taking advantage of Bhajan Singh’s illiteracy, Rajbir Kaur mislead him and got the house registered in the name of her husband head constable Ranjeet Singh. The victim then returned the borrowed money within six months. Ranjeet’s family was staying in the house when suddenly they got to know that the house was registered in the cop’s name. They filed a case and the court had given a stay order. Gurmail said police personnel called them to the Tripuri police station and forced them to sign an agreement with Rajbir Kaur and her husband stating that they have agreed to give the possession to the cop after receiving an amount of Rs 1,32,000, whereas nothing was given to them. On the other hand, Ranjeet Singh and Rajbir Kaur had a different story to tell. Rajbir said Bhajan Singh himself got the house registered in their name as he was short of money. They, out of courtesy, let his family stay in their house for so long. Later, when they wanted the possession, Bhajan Singh refused to do so and filed a court case on which status quo was maintained. They said, on April 16, Ranjeet willingly entered into an agreement with the cops and took Rs 1,32,000 and promised to vacate the house on May 5. Later, he requested for further stay and said he would vacate the premises on May 30. Finally, the family vacated the house on June 2 whereas Gurmail Kaur said they were still staying in the house.
Today, they added, when Rajbir went to the house, Gurmail Kaur and her few relatives manhandled her. They tried to tear her uniform. Rajbir said the lock on her room had been broken, but she was unaware what all had been stolen as she did not go to the house again after the incident. Tripuri SHO Karan Sher Singh said proper inquiry would be conducted in the case. He has deployed police personnel outside the house who said they were ordered not to let Gurmail’s family enter the house. Gurmail Kaur, along with other victims, met the SP and submitted a written complaint. No case has been registered so far. |

Future City Mohali
Kharar, June 20 Major roads linking GMADA area with the rest of Punjab include NH 21, NH 22, NH 64, NH 95, state highway (SH) 12 A, Kharar to NH 21 and NH 95 stretch and others. Among these, the Kharar-Landran-Banur-Tepla road is one of the major district roads carrying high percentage of inter-state goods vehicle and passenger vehicles. Passenger vehicles use this route to move between Delhi and Haryana. Eighty per cent of goods vehicles and 69 per cent passenger vehicles that travel on this road are inter-state traffic and use this route as an alternative to national highways due its directness. This route has been found to be an important link between Delhi and Punjab/Haryana. Jurong International, the Singapore-based company that has drafted this extensive proposal, stated that there were several localised congestion spots, including traffic junctions in Chandigarh, SAS Nagar, NH 22 junction at Kharar and other junctions at Landran, Banur and Zirakpur. Two wheelers in the GMADA area constitute 40 per cent of the road traffic. It has been predicted that in the coming years, the total daily person trips on road would be nine million, especially when the rate at which traffic is growing in Punjab is eight per cent per annum. With proposed Zirakpur-SAS Nagar-Kharar-Mullapur corridor, targeting immediate growth for next 15 to 20 years, managing transport system will become the biggest onus of the government. The master plan forecasts that besides new GMADA expressway and Mohali-Phagwara expressway, three national highways need upgradation to expressway standard. These include NH 22 from Zirakpur to NH 1, NH 21 from Zirakpur to eastern edge of Chandigarh and NH 95 from Kharar towards Ludhiana. These NHs will require four traffic lanes. All roads require widening, realignment and upgradation so as to endure the amount of traffic that has been forecasted. |

2 dialysis machines at GMSH-16 out of order
Chandigarh, June 20 For a service, which Ram Prasad (name changed) could have availed in GMSH-16 for just Rs 50, he was forced to shell out Rs 1,200 at a private clinic. His relative said Prasad’s uric acid level had gone up to an alarming level and he was running high temperature as both his kidneys had failed. “Doctors told us to go to a private hospital, even if it meant heavy expenses, if we wanted to save his life,” he said. Doctors at the hospital add that dialysis, to be performed twice a week in cases of both acute and chronic renal failure, costs approximately Rs 3,000 per month in GMSH-16, whereas a private clinic charges about Rs 12,000 for it. Dialysis is performed for patients suffering from Hepatitis and AIDS, besides the kidney problem. Besides GMSH-16, the dialysis service in government sector is available at GMCH-32 and PGI but the queue is long, so PGI mostly referred patients to GMSH-16. In the absence of a machine for such patients, we are forced to send them back, said a doctor. “We just cannot take chances”. He adds, “For every 10 patients visiting us for dialysis, at least one was suffering from Hepatitis or AIDS”. Senior officials at the hospital admitted that the dialysis machines were out of order. “We have already sent a letter to the engineer but have no idea whether it can be repaired or not as the models are redundant,” said a senior official on condition of anonymity. The officials maintained that the option of purchasing new ones to replace the defective ones was also considered but the order had not been placed yet. When contacted, joint medical superintendent, Dr SK Bhandari, who oversees the maintenance of hospital equipment, refused to comment on the issue and said all machines were under annual maintenance contract. |
