Water enters houses in
Patiala
Patiala, June 15 Sources in the municipal corporation revealed that the main reason for rainwater entering the houses was chocking of the ganda nullah which runs throughout the precincts of the walled city. Capt Amarinder Singh’s government had covered the nullah at the cost of several crores but sources revealed that the corporation had not made any efforts to remove blockages. The covering of the nullah is now proving to be a bane for the residents. A senior MC official revealed that there were a lot of technical deficiencies which were not addressed properly when the previous government covered the nullahs. A visit by the Tribune team to Urban Estate, Phase I, today revealed that water had entered into scores of LIG flats even as massive water puddles could be seen on roads in the area. The residents had a harrowing time negotiating their vehicles past the accumulated water. With reports of water infiltrating into homes, municipal commissioner M.P. Arora visited several waterlogged areas of the city. However, Balkar Singh, a resident of Raghomajra, said apart from providing lip service, the commissioner did not do much. This was the first heavy rainfall of the season and with many more showers expected this month, corporation officials are in a tizzy as to how to stop the water from entering the houses. An MC official, preferring anonymity, claimed, "The mayor and commissioner are just busy throwing verbal punches at each other and neither official is interested in the development of the city. Had the corporation officials removed the blockages in the ganda nulla, water would never have accumulated in our homes." The worst affected areas of the city are Mathura Colony, Rajpura Colony, Guru Nanak Nagar, Bishen Nagar, Lahori Gate, Badungar, Century Enclave, colonies adjoining the Thapar Institute of Engineering and Technology (TIET) and Urban Estate. Meanwhile, Congress and SAD municipal councillors have started playing the blame game over the damage done by rainwater in the town. All efforts to contact the mayor proved futile. |

Sec 17 piazza vendors’ weekend paradise
Chandigarh, June 15 For those who have seen the encroached narrow streets of Delhi’s Chandani Chowk, Janpath or Karol Bagh, the otherwise serene piazza area looks no different. Hundreds of encroachers occupy every inch of the available space, as shoppers rub shoulders to find their way. The piazza appears nothing less than encroacher’s paradise as the police, which incidentally is present in significant numbers, turns a blind eye to the goings-on. Interestingly, the municipal corporation has appointed a special team of inspectors for Sector 17 to keep a check on encroachment in the area. The corporation has always asserted that their team regularly monitors encroachments in the sector to keep it free from this menace. However, a visit to the sector marketplace on weekends reveals a contrasting picture. Scores of venders squat on the pavement to sell their wares. The encroachers sell non-branded items ranging from purses to jewellery, shirts to trousers and showpieces to posters without any fear of the law-enforcement agency. The goods are sold at night market every weekend and it’s all arranged by local vendors. Interestingly, each vendor occupies a fixed place every weekend and sells goods from there. One such vendor said they had stopped their business during daytime due to fear of anti-encroachment staff. He added that officials did not visit the marketplace during night to check encroachments and it was easy to do business at that time. Most raids by the corporation staff against encroachers have fallen flat, as encroachers have been tipped-off in advance about the raids. By the time a team arrives to remove encroachers, the latter have already left with their belongings. Once the team leaves, the encroachers are back in business. |
