After selling one hundred million copies of the trilogy of books and grossing over $3 billion at the box office, the theatrical version of J.R.R. Tolkien's Lord of the Rings is poised to hit the stage.

In Lord of the Rings on Stage Nat Geo goes behind the stage at 9 pm on June 18th to showcase how this multi-million dollar musical production is a modern theatrical marvel.

Engineering, art and technology have come together to create the epic production. The stage has 17 pneumatic lifts and three turntables; the wardrobe uses 500 pieces of armour and the actors, playing talking trees, use 10-feet stilts.

Billed as the most expensive show ever mounted costing $28 million, the three-and-a-half hour musical trilogy showcases more than 50 performers against a lavish set that took months to create.

Karan Mehra a.k.a. Karan of Pari Hoon Main on Star One is one tough guy, which he proved during a recent shoot of the serial. There was a fire sequence wherein Pari, played by Rashmi Desai, was to be rescued from the fire by Karan's look-alike.

But the guy never turned up. Just as the cancellation of the shooting was being contemplated Karan volunteered to do the scene himself.

"I leapt into the flames not worrying much about the outcome. Luckily, both Pari and I came out unscathed and the shot was given thumbs up, followed by a huge round of applause. Everyone cheered as if I was a superstar," says Karan, who can be now be dubbed a veteran of fire scenes as he also performed in the fire-on-the-sets scene in Om Shanti Om as well. — NF
