Film actor Vishal Malhotra was recently seen on TV as an IPL host

Most of the television stars dream of making it big on the silver screen. They look at the big screen as a natural progression from the smaller one. The trend has been growing in the recent past with Prachi Desai, Pawan Shankar, Arjun Punj and Shama Sikandar to name a few.

But Vishal Malhotra is one name that can be seen reversing this trend although he followed a similar pattern in the beginning.

He ventured into films when he was just one-serial-old through Ken Ghosh's Ishq Vishq. After that it has been a series of good films for this handsome actor — Kaal, Dor, Saalm-e-Ishq, Naqaab`85the list grows longer. Recently he was spotted on the TV anchoring IPL matches. Srabanti Chakrabarti catches up with the actor just after the IPL.

From an actor to a cricket host is quite a transition. How did you get into IPL?

Sony called me a few months back to host the fourth season of Indian Idol. However, due to some date clashes, I could not take it up. So they offered me the choice of hosting the IPL matches. I immediately accepted because of two reasons — I am a cricket fanatic and they just asked for 45 days, which suited me fine.

What was your most memorable event during the IPL?

My first interview was with Delhi Daredevil’s Glen McGrath. After the interview was over, he told me "You know something I have seen one of your films!" It turned out that he had seen Ishq Vishq during the last Aussie tour to India. I was floored !

Should we expect more films or are you interested in the small screen as well?

It is not a competition between the small and big screen. I am an actor and would be interested in any good project irrespective of the size of the screen. Currently my hands are full.

My latest film Jannat is doing very well. I am playing the role of Imraan Hashmi's friend, who is a bookie.

Then, Aziz Mirza's Kismat Connection is scheduled for release in July. I will be working with Shahid Kapoor, my first co-star from my first film, and Vidya Balan.

In Kismat Connection Shahid and I play dreamy-eyed college goers who plan to become great architects, but end up designing dog kennels. The story takes a twist when Vidya Balan comes in to our life.

I have two major releases scheduled later this year. Ravi Chopra’s Banda Yeh Bindaas Hai and Rajashri Production’s Ek Vivah Aisi Bhi are scheduled for release during the Diwali season.
