AN injured BJP worker cried out, "Hurry up! hide quickly," when he saw Sukhbir Badal coming into the hospital. The nurse pacified him and said the SAD president, in fact, was coming to inquire about his health.

Sukhbir Badal had reassured workers of both parties that there is no possibility of any break-up in ties between the Akalis and the BJP. But the BJP worker, groaning in pain, said that the question of ties between the two parties could be seen later; first he should assure them that there would be no broken bones in the coming MC elections.

I think for the next elections the Akalis should promise more dispensaries and first aid centres near each polling booth. Bibi Rajinder Kaur Bhattal has said that the Panchayat elections were rigged so ‘completely’ that it was a murder of democracy. I think she is wrong in saying so. The Akalis had a ‘free’ hand to thrash both the BJP workers and the Congressmen. When the Congress is in power they too have the same ‘freedom’ of rigging and beating up anyone who opposes them.

Was the Election Commission also satisfied with the way these civic elections were conducted? I think it was. They just counted the number of candidates before and after the elections. If there was no discrepancy in the number then it means that the elections were free and fair.
