Shall we dance Mr Koshy?
by Thangasurabi Bright Raj Frog Books. Pages 329. Rs 345

Shall we dance Mr Koshy?THIS is a soft, mellow, heart warming love tale suffused with pink clouds et al. It is about an extraordinary association between two individuals driven by distinct passions.

Candace, a misfit merchandiser, 23 years of age with a ‘brain of Shakespeare’s theatre assistant’ is pissed off with her lifeless existence in the garment industry. She aspires to take writing as a profession but does not know how to start afresh. Eventually, she grapples with the self, clears a lot of cobwebs and moves on with her journey from opacity to transparency.

On the contrary, Abe E. Koshy, a senior financial analyst, perfectionist with a mathematician’s brain whose life is organised down to the minute. This iconic tall dark handsome (TDH) man lacks the ‘fun gene’ in his system until he finds his soul mate. Love happens when they both don’t have a plan for it. They have nothing in common, yet are made for each other in some strange way.

Both of them realised that life could be totally unpredictable. They were in the same school and in the same literary team. After eight years they met on a community website. At that juncture, the thought of falling in love with a person they knew from their school days seemed farce. It was on the business trip to Bangalore, she met with an accident. Once again Abe came into her life. All the emotions within them started pairing out. But they didn’t realise that this was the starting point to the change their lives were about to undergo.

The novel has a cinematic appeal with a traditional storyline: yearning, identity crisis, separation, secret lives are some of the ingredients. Witty dialogues and fun situations add strength to the narrative, for instance, bungee jumping—swooping down from the top and hanging upside down in mid-air was one giant leap in amplifying their relationship of faith.

Occasionally, language bumps in a somewhat discomfiting manner. There are rough edges for which the critics might savage her. But despite this, she has a great talent for weaving drama into the everyday.

More than anything else, it is a good romance with a healthy dose of humor uplifting one in everyday life.
