Four of the remaining five zila parishad seats and 25 out of 28 block segments where polls were postponed and were now to be held on May 26, fell in Nabha block which was worst hit by poll violence and where a deluge of opposition complaints was witnessed.

Interestingly, officials who had performed poll duty in zila parishad and samiti polls have been entrusted with panchayat elections duty also. Jeev determined to make it to world top-50 ranking
Occupies second slot in Asian Tour order of merit
Donald Banerjee

Chandigarh, May 22
A gutsy Jeev Milkha Singh of Chandigarh is all set to repeat his 2006 Asian Golf Tour performance when he finished on top of the order of merit. His blistering six under 66 on the opening day of the Irish Open saw him sharing the lead with Australia’s Richard Green in the European Tour event.

An amazing eagle on the par five seventh and four more birdies in a blemishless card was enough evidence of the Chandigarh golf icon finding his form, although in patches. Although he played over par cards of 76, 75 and 74 on the subsequent days, his 40th position was enough to take him to the 14th position in the European Tour order of merit.

Earlier in the US Masters, Jeev fought back from a disastrous opening 10 holes to sign off with a three over par 75 to post his best Major result

Jeev, a member of the Professional Golf Tour of India, completed the year’s opening Major with a four-day total of four over par 292 which earned him a creditable equal 25th position. His previous best finish at a Major was tied 36th in the US Open
last year.

Jeev has been doing very well on the Asian Tour circuit with two runner-up finishes. He occupies the second spot in the order of merit with cash earnings of $ 5,40,694.

He trails Mark Brown of New Zealand who occupies the top slot with earnings of $ 6,51,000.

Jeev, who had a bad season in 2007 after occupying the 37th slot in 2006, is determined to make it to the top-50 world ranking this year.

Presently ranked 83rd in the world, Jeev said after the US Masters: “You learn a lot every time you play here. I am mentally tired. Every hole takes a lot out of you. I am taking the week off to refresh myself and start all over again.”

“I love this course. You have to be sharp. It keeps you going. It doesn’t let you give up because if you do, you’re done.

You have to make sure that you keep trying and it pays. Sometimes, if you try funky shots, you pay for it.

“I will go back to Asia before returning to Europe. I want to move back into the top-50 in the world and try to get back here for the US Open (in June).”

Chandigarh, May 22
UT administrator Gen (Retd) S.F. Rodrigues’ vision of setting up the first child art gallery of the region in here may not see the light of the day if things move in such a lackadaisical manner. The gallery, which was all set this March, is still waiting to showcase any artwork. The museum authority feels there is no budding artist available in the region whose work could be displayed in the gallery.

Sources in the administration revealed that there was a separate section for the child art gallery-cum-administrative block in the museum, but in 1997 it was dismantled and city museum was set up in its place.

In 2005 it was again decided by the administration to set up a separate section of child art gallery in the museum for providing a platform to children to display their works of art and craft. Under this concept it was mooted to set up a live art gallery to display work related to clay modeling, paintings of winners of on-the-spot painting competitions, work of paper craft and selected items of Chandigarh carnivals.

Beside this, a special section for the mentally and physically challenged children was also to be set up to motivate their art works.

Sources revealed that in order to make this section, a proposal was made that the cafeteria of museum, which was not in use, could be converted into child art gallery section. The project was finalised with the consent of chief engineering and architecture department of the Chandigarh administration.

During renovation of the child gallery, a display screen, track lighting and flooring were installed to give a new look to the gallery with a cost of Rs 70 lakh.

When contacted, Navjot P.S. Randhawa, director, Government Museum and Art Gallery said at present this section of the gallery is being used for display routine exhibitions. He said the gallery is yet to start, as it is hard to find good work of budding artists, which could be displayed in the gallery. He said this section would open when some other section would be merged with it.

Some artist groups who support this project said the aim of setting up this gallery is to give a stage to young artists. They said it is not possible to find famous artists like M.F. Hussain in these young children now, but this platform would be a source of motivation to them to show something extra ordinary in this field.

This ustad has little faith in fusion
S.D. Sharma

Ustad Shahid Parvez
Ustad Shahid Parvez

Chandigarh, May 22
“Music is an unending quest, an eternal pilgrimage. It is nothing short of Ibadat for us,” maintains the celebrated sitar wizard, Ustad Shahid Parvez, legendary proponent of pure Indian classical music and the guru-shishya tradition.

Representing the seventh lineage of the illustrious Etawah gharana, the Ustad is regarded as the most accomplished sitarist after the great Pandit Ravi Shankar and Ustad Vilayat Khan. He learnt to play surbahar and vocal music from his uncle Hafiz Khan, one-time Bollywood playback singer who rendered ‘Vatan ki raah mein vatan ke…’

In city for a performance at the Satguru Partap Singh memorial sangeet sammelan, he emphasised that the guru-shishya tradition was imperative for learning. “My father and Guru Ustad Aziz Khan shifted me to a village for better concentration in tranquil environs, away from the maddening crowd of Mumbai,” he added.

He also emphasised on riyaz. “My sons Shakir Khan, Sabir Khan and Siraz practiced as hard as my disciples in Kolkata, Pune or New York. Unlike the glamour of reality shows I want to see them carving a niche for themselves in the music world on the strength of their calibre and talent.”

Not averse to innovation, the Ustad wondered why this was needed at all. “The so-called fusion attempts end up as confusion. I have composed music for an album ‘Teer-e-Neemkash’ and played sitar for many film songs. But music direction is different ball game altogether. On the so-called supremacy of the gharanas, he simply recited an Urdu couplet “Hamari bazm se uss bazm mein farq sirf itna hai, vahan chirag aur yahan dil jalaye jaate hain.”
