Residents protest putting up of board on govt land
Ambala, May 21 The local police which included SHOs of Ambala Cantonment, Mahesh Nagar, Ambala city, Baldev Nagar, along with a force of about 80 and in the presence of the naib tehsildar of Ambala Cantonment, was to put a board stating “government property” on a piece of land which has people residing since 1840, around the time when the cantonment was established. The administration has been making efforts to get the land vacated from the 200 families which reside their now. The families, which have grown from the initial number of 24, argue that they are based here since 1840 and now the government wants to take back the land. According to the residents, about 24 families were based on the 90 acres of land in 1840. When the Britishers decided to make a cantonment here, these families were bought in from UP to work as carpenters, labourers etc. They were made to leave their homes and were settled here. However, they have no property rights on the land. Now they state that the government wants land and it is unfair. High drama was witnessed on the land situated near Hathikhana mandir when the officials tried to put the board on Kuldeep Prakash’s property. People immediately gathered on the spot and objected. Three persons - Rani, Kuldeep Prakash and Rajkumari - even tried to immolate themselves. People gathered there even manhandled the police personnel present. The police even resorted to do a mild lathicharge. The police had to, however, leave the place after the mob got violent. The agitators later protested against the Congress. Local politicians who later visited the place assured the residents that they would help them in keeping their land. |
