Parsvnath Case
Dera Bassi, May 8 The police has arrested Davinder Singh, the driver of the trolley which was used to ferry the complainant’s household items from the site and Basant Singh, driver of the JCB machine that was used to raze the structure. Davinder is a resident of Dera Bassi while Basant Kumar is from Kurukshetra. With this, the total number of persons arrested in the case has gone up to 10. Meanwhile, a local court today remanded the eight employees of Parsvnath Developers to 14 days in the judicial custody. The court of the sub-divisional judicial magistrate Naval Kumar also rejected the bail application of the accused and would hear their case on May 11. The police also raided offices of the company in Sector 26, Chandigarh, today. “We went to ask for some papers but were told that there are no papers with regards to the Dera Bassi project in the Chandigarh office,” said the Dera Bassi police. Police sources added that a team would be leaving for Delhi tonight to arrest the other persons named in the FIR. The police had booked Pradeep Kumar Jain, chairman, along with five directors of the company, for conspiring with the accused. |

Namdharis played stellar role in freedom struggle: VC
Patiala, May 8 Dr Singh said another significant contribution of the Namdharis towards preservation of culture was that of keeping alive the original tradition of performing gurmat sangeet (religious music of Sikhs) on string instruments. Former president of the Punjab Pradesh Congress Committee and the Namdhari Darbar H.S. Hanspal said the role of Namdharis in the Indian freedom struggle had been totally ignored. The issue needed to be focused upon and debated at different platforms. He pleaded with the government to pay attention to proper projection of the contribution of Namdharis. Namdhari chair head at GNDU, Amritsar, Prof Joginder Singh; dean academic affairs of Punjabi University Dr Sucha Singh Gill; vice-president of Namdhari Darbar Surinder Singh and Prof Kirpal singh Kasel also spoke. |

Scientific instruments worth Rs 8 lakh stolen
Ambala, May 8 The incident came to light in the morning when workshop supervisor Om Prakash came to work. According to workshop owner M.R. Aggarwal, 100 microscopes, each worth Rs 8,000 were found to be missing along with some money. Aggarwal informed that the shop was closed as usual on Wednesday night. He had left the shop early and two of his workers left around 8 pm. It was in the morning that the theft was discovered. The police was informed and inquest proceedings have been initiated. |

Patiala, May 8 Chandumajra, who undertook a whirlwind tour of about a dozen villages of Patiala district and campaigned in favour of his party candidates, alleged that it was the Congress, which ruled Punjab for decades together but failed to come up to the expectations of people, particularly those living in the rural areas of the state. “Not only the Congress had ignored the people of Punjab but it also worked against rural development in a planned manner. Rural Punjab has always been subjected to discrimination. People should come out against this age-old policy of discrimination by voting in favour of the party which has been standing guard for interests of the people of Punjab,” said Chandumajra. |

Patiala, May 8 The fire brigade is also burdened with the responsibility of taking care of fire accidents in the nearby towns, including Samana, Rajpura, Bhadson and Devigarh. Only five out of six fire tenders are in working condition. It has one foam tender, which has a capacity of 450 liters of foam and 600 liters of carbon dioxide. The fire brigade has no hydraulic lift or hydraulic platform. District fire officer Jatinder Singh said the matter of staff shortage had been brought to the notice of the municipal corporation commissioner S.P. Arora. As of now, there was an urgent need for seven drivers. Corporation health officer Dr Yadvinder Singh Banga said the matter of staff shortage had been taken up at the highest level but without any results. When contacted, Arora said the matter of recruitment of new staff was taken up with the local bodies department but the proposal was rejected on the plea that the state government had banned all new recruitments. The health officer said at least five more drivers and 20 firemen were required. |

Jasmeet Kaur of Class IX received Rs 21,000 for winning gold medal in handball national open tournament held at Renukoot (UP). District sports officer Subhash Sharma gave away the prizes. |

Man sentenced to life for sodomy,
murder
Ropar, May 8 The victim, Aditya Dhanraj Gill, had come with his mother to his maternal house in June 2006. On June 29, 2006 he went missing in the afternoon. Later, on July 1, the area residents reported to the police that a strong foul odour was emanating from the manhole of the sewer. The police looked into the matter and recovered Aditya’s body. Medical examination revealed that the child had been sodomised before being brutally murdered. A cloth was found tied tightly around Aditya's neck, which revealed that he was strangulated to death. The police also recovered a pair of scissors, a bed-sheet drenched in blood and Aditya's undergarments. Rohit was 17 at the time of the crime. He lived opposite to Aditya's maternal house. He was arrested and found guilty of the offence. |

Night golf tees off
Chandigarh, May 8 Strong winds this evening heralding a dust-storm threatened to wreck the opoening day's programme. But a few drops of rain and a drop in the wind speed saw the golfers, including eight ladies, tee off as the shot went off. As the evening progressed a cool breeze brought a feeling of comfort to the night golf participants. The captain of the course Brig H.S. Batth and the tournament c ommittee chairman T.P.S. Virk were happy at the smooth progress of the opening day's events.In fact the tournament today was a perfect dress rehearsal for the actual night golf tourism championship which will see diplomats and corporate executives sweat it out for the prizes at stake in the first night golf tournament to promote tourism in the city. The brain child of Chandigarh Golf Tourism Director Vivek Atray in sssociation with the Chandigarh Golf Association and the Chandigarh Golf Club the night golf championship will open the doors for night golf, which will replace day golf during the hot summer months. The competition played on the stableford system on the opening day will see competition on gross and nett scores on the main day tomorow. The main event tomorrow will see diplomats from the US Embassy and the High Commissions of Canda and Korea, besides a host of executives from corporates and travel and tourism agencites teeing off tomorrow for the prizes at stake in the first night golf tourism event to be hosted by Chandigarh. The results of the opening day's events were still being tabulates on the stableford system and would be announced tomorrow along with the main competiton. |
APJ-Kharar lift trophy
Mohali, May 8 The team drubbed Government Model Senior Secondary School, Phase 3BI, by 67 runs in the final match of the tournament. Batting first after winning the toss, APJ put on 205 for 7 in allotted 35 overs. Prateek steered the team to respectable total with his 76 run knock. He was well supported by Devrat Sharma, who chipped in 45 runs. Gaurav struck twice for Government school team, returning with figure two for 28. In reply, Government team were restricted at 138 in 28 overs despite brave efforts being put in by Akhtar, who made valiant 54 runs. Manpreet helped the team with 23-run knock. Harkeerat was the wrecker-in-chief as he proved instrumental in sending four batsmen back to pavilion, conceding 22 runs. Navjot took two for 20 runs. Billiards and Snooker Championship
Chandigarh, May 8 Gursher Singh who clinched the first frame 67-45 against Rajesh Jain could not maintain the tempo and lost two frames consecutively 27-66, 37-56 to lose the game 1-2. Gurminder Singh beat Judge Bali 2-0 (52-45, 69-17) while Mahesh Chaudhary registered 2-0 win over Akshay Goyal. The frames score was 65-59, 39-28. In other two matches, Suresh Chaudhary beat Harpreet Singh 2-0 (62-17, 73-27) whereas Ashish Seth emerged winner against Vineet Khosla 2-0 (58-17, 72-08). In Billiards pre-quarter game of 150 points, Sandeep S. Chadha and Manu Singh continued their winning spree and beat their rivals with Chadha got the better of Harinder Singh, 151-101, while Manu beat Umesh Bhandari, 151-135, to secure quarterfinal berths. |

Chandigarh, May 8 The chief guest Anuradha Saboo, director of Jan Seva Trust of the Saboo Family inaugurated the camp.
